Madame Restell, aka Ann Trow Lohman, came to America in search of better economic opportunity. And she found it, providing abortions in NYC. As attitudes towards abortion shifted during the 19th Century, Madame Restell's legal jeopardy increased, leading to the fateful moment when Anthony Comstock knocked on her office door.
Join me, and guest Jennifer Wright, to hear the story of Madame Restell on #UnsungHistory.
Between 1851 and 1910 the ratio of men to women arriving in NYC from Ireland was roughly equal. Irish women often took jobs in domestic service, drawn by the provided housing, food, and clothing, which allowed them to send the bulk of their earnings back home to Ireland.

#OnThisDay in 1965, Patsy Mink of Hawaii was sworn in as the first Asian American woman & first woman of color to serve in the U.S. Congress.
Mink supported legislation to help women, especially women of color & women in poverty. She co-authored the landmark Title IX Amendment of the Higher Education Act. After Mink’s death in 2002, Title IX was renamed the Patsy T. Mink Equal Opportunity in Education Act.
#OnThisDay in 1775, the Continental Northern Army failed in their attempt to capture Quebec, in large part because a smallpox outbreak had weakened & diminished their forces. George Washington's eventual decision to order mass inoculation of the army proved successful in avoiding that fate in the future.
