Madame Restell, aka Ann Trow Lohman, came to America in search of better economic opportunity. And she found it, providing abortions in NYC. As attitudes towards abortion shifted during the 19th Century, Madame Restell's legal jeopardy increased, leading to the fateful moment when Anthony Comstock knocked on her office door.

Between 1851 and 1910 the ratio of men to women arriving in NYC from Ireland was roughly equal. Irish women often took jobs in domestic service, drawn by the provided housing, food, and clothing, which allowed them to send the bulk of their earnings back home to Ireland.

As devastating as the great Chicago fire of 1871 was, it was far from the deadliest event in the city's history.
