In better times, I had a #Discord Nitro subscription (cringe I know). Mostly for the boosts to support my friend's brand at the time.
Well, I canceled it but got billed anyway. So I filed a request for a refund and showed the receipts. Like I have the email showing it was canceled.
They won't refund it even though it's within the window according to their own policy. I didn't think Discord Inc would knowingly steal from a #homeless person but here we are.
So I'm deleting my Discord and staying off permanently. I recommend others do the same.
It's a sketchy app that sucks up to #VC and harvests all your data. It stores all your messages unencrypted which means you're one hack away from having all your personal life aired out. Besides, in this new #AI age let's just stop using these surveillance-capitalist platforms before the tech bros manage to create Skynet or whatever.

Eventually, AI valuations should fall below typical tech valuations, because AI is less scalable than traditional tech. The reason there's a multitrillion dollar ecosystem funding tech companies and not construction companies is that technology scales infinitely. Write once copy infinitely; there's zero marginal cost to adding users.
Building an AI business is still more capital-efficient than building a construction startup, but it's not as good as writing a piece of software and selling it on the internet.
Two things are happening here that are huge portents for the future: 1) investors are vastly more sensitive to monetization because money isn't free anymore (ZIRP); 2) AI/LLM priced like it was the next coming of crypto, but in reality it's just a new technology.
That second point really matters. Crypto was 80% pyramid scheme and 20% technology, which meant that _nearly every early adopter got rich very quickly_. And not fake-rich; people were buying $50mm homes. This led to an explosion of "respectable" crypto startups that weren't pyramid schemes (some were genuinely cool) to attract legitimate investors, but they were all drifting behind the valuation and growth expectations of the pyramid schemes. The market got grossly distorted.
AI won't work like that; there's no get-rich-quick element here, and the greater fool theory doesn't work very well without retail investors.

If you’re wondering that about the employees of #Hopin that had shares as part of their compensation?
Without knowing the details, I suspect they had #VSOP shares which by design, can not be sold in a secondary. Therefore employees only get paid if the company in its entirety gets sold, and only if the financial investors already got a return on their money invested (so called liquidation preference)
Since Hopin raised billions and sold for millions, employees got nothing out of it.

Predatory pricing used to be illegal, but #ChicagoSchool #economists convinced judges to stop enforcing the law on the grounds that predatory pricing was *impossible* because no rational actor would choose to lose money. I'm not sure if I posted this before (or if I even read it all when I bookmarked it) but I just took a few minutes to go through it carefully (it's LONG) but it's good. I know a lot of people are burned out by the AI crap (I pretty much am) but this really gives a good rundown on the history, the sci-fi and the future. Man, these dudes seriously wanna live forever (but WHY? Have they ever seen a vampire movie??) Anyway. It's a great long read if you have time.
