Super happy that I managed to migrate all of my existing #Virtuabox VMs across to VMware. It's been like 15 years since I last looked at #VMware. My bad. It's awesome. Not $200-for-the-full-version awesome, but free for the Player is good enough for right now.

After many years of using Oracle #Virtualbox (due to being able to use it for commercial purposes for free), I just installed and tried out #VMWare Player 17. Jesus christ is it fast! Booted stock Ubuntu 23.10 in about 11 seconds. Virtualbox was an absolute dog. That's it - I'm converting my virtualbox images over - hope that's possible.

I use VMWare workstation extensively in a professional capacity and prefer it over Oracle Virtualbox. Hyper-V is good only if you want to use a windows OS as a guest and have any hope of quick desktop interaction with no fuss.
This news article disgusts me on a level that makes me say I’m now going to be re-evaluating my primary VM solution for professional work. I don’t think I can approve this sort of disgusting executive behavior by voting with an upgrade that I need to do soon to workstation.

This bypass is not present on port 443 (VCD provider and tenant login). On a new installation of VMware Cloud Director Appliance 10.5, the bypass is not present." No mention of exploitation.

I used the Windows 11 ARM version inside of #VMWare Fusion this weekend and it performed perfectly. I was waiting for the day when I could ditch an Intel Mac just for windows use and that time has come.
1. Yes, some things like dropbox don't install there, but I used RClone to get access to it that way.
2. For things that I want to use back home, NVDA Remote serves me perfectly well.
3. Wireguard didn't install for some reason, but I can run it directly on-Mac which means the VM also uses it.
Handy tip if you get stuttering audio with #PipeWire in a #vmware (and maybe others) #VirtualMachine

I got a fun #vmware question: Has anyone heard of Linux VMs not being bootable on a given physical hardware platform without upgrading the VM Hardware/Compatibility level?
Pretty much all documentation I've seen suggests you should only upgrade VM Compatibility to enable new features in the VM. But I've apparently encountered a platform that older VM Compatibility versions aren't fully compatible with.

My main quest:
Setup #VMWare #vCenter Auto deploy. It uses TFTP to install esxi on hosts via pxe.
The vcenter appliance has a TFTP server. But it's not actually mentioned in the docs!
So I can see the file requests on the server logs. But when it's time to transfer the file, it times out on the reads.
This is ridiculous and amazing.

I'm not naive when it comes to #Linux administration, but I don't do it every day, and much of my experience is from over a decade ago. So I'm always surprised & relieved when I'm able to update my #selfhosted #Mastodon server successfully each time. #VMware Snapshots give me a roll back opportunity allowing me to proceed with confidence. But it still feels good to have it all work the first time and not need them.
Since its nearing Beta, I should talk about my pet project: :blobcattoot:🎉 Wyng Backup!
What's so great about it?! :blobcatnerd::blobcatthinkingsunglass:
- Wyng can make lightning fast backups of logical volumes, disk images, or just plain large files... like multiple-terabyte-sized volumes backed up in just seconds! (Your local storage needs snapshot capability for this to work, but backup storage does not!)
- An ingenious snapshot rotation scheme is used to keep snapshot local space consumption to a tiny fraction of what they normally require (a big drawback of other snapshot-based backup tools).
- Deduplication is also supported.
- Improves Opsec: Works even in net-isolated admin environments, like Qubes 'dom0', and there is no trust bestowed on remote or guest systems. There is no mounting of volumes or disk images; all data is handled as just a set of blocks. All encryption & verification operations happen within the local admin environment. Perfect for keeping backups of VMs/containers with various levels of (un)trusted content.
- Maintenance functions (like pruning old backups) are also very fast, similar to how Time Machine works.
