What pisses me off about #VisionPro isn't what $AAPL is doing, it's what #valve *isn't* doing. They farted out the #valveIndex back in 2019 and in all this time they haven't fixed #SteamVR. I have to completely restart Windows in order to make the headset work at all. It's got cameras built in, but I can't see the outside world through them while I use the desktop environment. So much wasted potential, they just gave up and built #steamdeck instead. #VR #steam #videoGames #gaming

So Apple has come out with an Augmented Reality (AR) headset device which:
* Costs $3500
* Lasts 2 hours
* Doesn't take you to a different world, but treats the world as a massive screen for your apps
* Said apps are (as of right now) nothing more than just simple iPhone apps
I'm not going to be so stupid as to say it's dead in the water, because as someone who has a Macbook Pro, an iPhone, an iPad, an Apple Watch, Airpods Pro, Airpods Max (because the Airpods Pro keeps falling out of my ears and headphones have better noise cancellation) I get the appeal and the allure to buying the next Apple wotsit.
But this thing? This thing has zero appeal to me. Not just because of the above, but also because it's something I need to strap on my face in front of my eyes and use for (what it was intended for) long periods of time.
It honestly wouldn't surprise me if Apple kept on iterating on it to make it a success like they did with the watch - I've shat on the Apple Watch on launch, and here I am wearing it, due to the constant health and fitness features.
But I just cannot see myself being won over with the AR glasses thing. They look goofy (I said that about the Apple Airpods Max, but bought them second hand for £200 cheaper than the asking price so that's why I got them - I still think they look like shit).
As an aside, I also play video games, and the whole Virtual Reality (VR) was something I was looking forward to and was interested... until the scene was on its last legs.
I think products that ask customers to strap something to their eyes for long (15min+) periods of time aren't going to do well in the market. It's why 3DTVs haven't been successful. It's why VR headsets, despite all the song and dance from Valve, Sony, and Meta, still haven't taken off (I know this is AR, but still)
And just one final thing - I can appreciate the desire for conferencing hardware, but we have webcams and mics. They may not be amazing, but they do the job just fine.
Not only that, but after being stuck at home during COVID, I really, really miss human interaction - and this is coming from an introverted person. I don't mind a phone that allows me to quickly communicate to others from a distance. What I won't do is buy a device that encourages isolation (like VR/AR headsets).

WHY did Dolphin feel that they had to have the Wii private key hardwired in the source?
Are all the isos/roms in circulation dumped with encryption intact?
Seems like they should have been decrypted at dump time?
Was there a reason thats not feasible?
I followed the Wii hacking scene pretty closely back in the day, even dumped my own WIi discs at one point. But didn't realize Dolphin had the private keys in the sourcecode.

I love emulation too but if you do emulation, you *must* buy the hardware and your games legally. Period. Especially for devices that are still being sold
The fact that a proprietary key was in the emulator code itself was a mistake. People have to extract this key from their console by themselves (using software of course)
There is no other way around this. Otherwise it's not emulation anymore it's piracy
After playing the demo on PC, I wanted to see how it stacked up on console.
I also wanted to see how many hoops I needed to jump through to get it working on Steam Deck.

Maybe I’m the last idiot to figure this out, but I think I finally know what the wide elastic band on the back of #Valve’s #SteamDeck carrying case is for: It’s a passthrough for your carryon #suitcase handle when traveling, just like with a laptop carryon or other #travel bag. The power adapter in its separate mesh pocket can even nestle in between the handle posts.

Ok, this might be a bit ridiculous, but I am honestly to impressed by the gorgeous simplicity of how this whole thing is set up, that I’m going to keep randomly adding stuff to this thread.
I’ve always known that #Steam can “manage” games that you haven’t bought through it, including once you just can’t buy through it. I kind of wondered why that was, I figured it might be just for the “social” effect of getting updates on your profile that you’re playing something. That in itself is still pretty cool of #Valve to do in an environment where walled gardens are The Shit and most big companies are happy to tell you to go screw yourself if you want any semblance of interoperability with things that are literally the same, but just have a different logo on them.
However yesterday I understood a much more important reason for that: CONTROLLERS! Specifically their layouts. I already fangirled about the desktop mode on the #steamdeck, but I hadn’t realize the full power of it yet, especially for gaming.
If anyone from #Valve is here, in a position to answer: Why on earth is Windows 11 pinging #Steam servers immediately after the FIRST boot, on a CLEAN, newly purchased laptop, with nothing installed, and without user consent?
And what data is being shared?
What's the nature of that specific relationship between #Microsoft and Valve?
Let's get this cleared up so the #FOSS community can hopefully continue appreciating what Valve does for Linux + gaming.

Exclusives suck as a concept. They always sucked. They’re hurting consumers and only benefit platform holders. Thankfully #Valve doesn’t look like they’re going to go that route.
I never thought about that, but I think most of the changes are under the hood. It is great that #valve constantly improves #steam. Theres a reason I've fully boycotted #epicgames
