Building another #RaisedMound #gardening bed. Been doing this for years.

#Hügelkultur (pronounced hoogleculture) is #German for #HillCulture . You grow crops on raised, earthen mound that consists of a foundation of logs/branches covered in layers of manure, compost & soil.

This is where I started with joining up with #environmental #activists on #VancouverIsland in #BritishColumbia #Canada & almost all of us were arrested multiple times. We tried almost every peaceful actions possible. Loggers were violent, threatening us with rape/physical assaults. They set fires to tents w/ppl sleeping inside. They bashed me in head with a stick when I got out of truck & asked WTF they're doing & if they know they just escalated to attempted murders.

This is one of the numerous waterfalls on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. I underexposed by one full stop to create a more dramatic effect.

Waterfall on the left side and a patch of green vegetation on the right side. The rest of the composition is dark so details are not visible.

I am now following enough people on here that I feel comfortable to start unfollowing some accounts that aren’t producing the content I want to see all the time. Not real people, just a few news aggregators and such that I was following that are duplicating content and to make room for more local content. If you are in British Columbia in particular, give me a shout! I’d like to see more BC content and build the BC corner of Mastodon!

Just got home from work & getting some #plants ready for my first #GardenersOfMastodon in person exchange with fellow #VancouverIsland #FoodSecurity & #SelfSufficiency #FoodGardener 👩‍🌾🤘
I hope to meet & do more plants & harvest exchanges with fellow small #FoodGrowers on #VanIsle 👍 When I lived in Youbou & Cedar - did lots of these trades with fellow backyard food farmers & it was beneficial in multiple ways for me & the fab folks I traded with.

We drove wayyy up the White River valley to find giants. This is one of the largest, if not the largest Western Red Cedars that I’ve seen in real life. My friend David found it wayyyy off the trails in White River Provincial Park.

Met this old relative (the cedar tree) on our walk along Stocking Creek on #VancouverIsland yesterday. It’s name in #hulquminum is xpey (h-pay) with the h sound made from the back of the throat. #indigenous #language #ThickTrunkTuesday

Photo of a large cedar tree in a temperate rainforest. The trunk spirals as it rises. Long bare branches dangle from above, moss clinging to them.

This forest was logged in the 1920s. I once talked, briefly, with an elderly man who'd been a teenage "whistle punk" when the original 400-600 year old Douglas Fir forest was yarded and loaded onto rail cars.
100 years later, it's still only a shadow of what it was. But my oh my, what a beautiful shadow.
I'm grateful that someone had the foresight to protect this area, that it will always be here to remind us of what a forest might be on Vancouver Island.

Experimenting with a “vintage” lens. Nikon 300mm f4 @ an OM Systems OM-5 with the metabones 0.71x focal reducer so effectively an 425mm f2.8 on my m43 body.

I need a lot more practice focussing it manually; there is a viltrox focal reducer that should work with its autofocus but that I don’t have.

So here are some shots taken around downtown Victoria.

Vancouver Island has so many beautiful places to see. On this trip we focused most of our time on the northwest tip of the Island. My wife and I spent several days in and around Tofino. This is a small hidden beach just on the edge of town. On this night we almost had the whole beach to ourselves.
