A David and Goliath scene - to encourage our climate campaigners to keep going. This Magpie was worried the Wedge Tail Eagle might be after its eggs - so it attacked. Makes a change from dive bombing humans! The Magpie flew rings around the Eagle - and saw it off.

In the Fort Langley Miscellaneous files from HBCA, I discovered a list of grass seeds ordered from England and sown along the brigade trail, to provide feed for the horses on the next year's journey. 🇦🇺 Australia, Victoria: ‘Matter of life or death’: How sick Victorians can’t get COVID jabs

Kind and thoughtful Mastodoners, please be aware Black Friday can be a sensitive term in Australia. We have catastrophic bushfires too regularly.
In 2009 Black Saturday killed 173 and destroyed houses and wildlife on the fringes of Melbourne and other places. My lovely boss fought all night to save her house and suffered survivor guilt.
In 1983 Ash Wednesday killed 47 and for several hours I didn't know if my parents were OK. A reporter in the Adelaide Hills broadcast the destruction of his own house.
In 1939 Black Friday killed 71 and forest settlements were permanently abandoned. My mother remembered as a 6 year old running home from school terrified.
So please be aware.

Ivy Leaved Violets are an early Spring flower - so they would be well and truly finished by now. This photo is to remind you how pretty they are. They flower in late Winter or early Spring, so the ground is nice and wet. An eye level photo means lying in the mud!

I don't use IG anymore. A friend who uses it sent me a screenshot from a local photojournalist, Mike Graeme. I'm familiar with him from old growth activism - he documented a lot of the actions on the island. He stealthy got a photo of me with my #peace & #ceasefire signs at the #FreePalestine #Victoria #protest & march on Nov. 12.

Ferns and #gumtrees adorned this space for hundreds of square kilometres… thriving in their natural habitat.
Earlier, #kookaburras were heard ringing out amongst the tree tops.
Blue Wrens flitted throughout the trees.
And no other person was around, for miles.
This is kinda Heaven on Earth!
Found it tough to identify these, therefore if anyone knows what they are, please enlighten us!
They were in abundance… we’re in late Spring here.
The backdrop of gorgeous gums completed the scene.

The Monday before Cup Day, a weird annual ritual for Victoria where the cities are just that little bit quiet (since everyone's headed out for a proper 4-day weekend) and whoever is left "working" because they didn't take leave is only half-working at best.
Clients aren't around, half my co-workers aren't available, so there will be a bit of thumb-twiddling today for sure.
Hospital pressure as 'exponential increase' of COVID hits Ballarat.
"We've got people in hospital as a result of COVID, and people coming in with something else who test positive to COVID," Dr Grenfell said.
"It's a timely reminder the pandemic hasn't finished yet, which means that now is the time to do what we know we should - if you are sick, test, stay home until you're well and if you're going into a crowded space and don't want to catch COVID, wear a mask."
Now it can be revealed... this weekend I'm off on 707 Operations' 'Grainlander' train to the Mallee, featuring silo art and the added treat of a movie projected onto wheat silos at Quambatook. Should be fun. :)

If you read this article and didn't know what the recent tenancy law changes were then you'd think they were a great burden on landlords.
But when you actually know what the tenancy law changes were you can really see these arseholes telling on themselves.
Victoria rattled by magnitude 5 earthquake
The earthquake occurred around 2am. We slept through it. Bit bigger than the occasional tremors we get around here, but no harm done.

1/ Day #2 at #UBCM Talk about Community Health Centres, which are run by non-profit societies or co-ops. They tackle all determinants of health through teams. One of the oldest in BC is the CoolAid society. CHC exists in places like #Victoria, #Kamloops #GalianoIdlsland #Sooke . Funding model is tenuous - grants, fundraising, etc. ED Valerie St John advocates for a greater role for CHC. Video "I think CHCs are the future. They should be."
Crowded trains are a government choice. Trains are really efficient and cheap to run. You have to severely under fund trains for them to be crowded.

A rational road policy would be to reduce the speed limit to 60km/hr until road works can be done to widened the road shoulder to make it safer.
Under normal conditions a driver encountering a cyclist on this road is going to need to slow from 80km/hr to 20 km/hr immediately upon seeing the cyclist as the road isn't wide enough to safely overtake.
Minimum stopping distance at 80 km/hr is 65 metres. Some corners on this road don't provide that distance of visibility (which is why overtaking isn't allowed on this road).

On September 3, 1898, a Milne #seismograph began operation in the basement of the old Customs House building on the Victoria waterfront. It was one of the first seismographs in Canada (and one of very few operating in the world at the time):
