#VictoriaBC

So I had a lovely, albeit somewhat embarrassing evening. The Belfry Theatre has a PWYC scale for their seasons tickets, so I got onboard this year, as I’ve been missing theatre. Tonight I took my pal D & by sheer coincidence we both dressed in an accidentally coordinated way such that we totally came across as an older couple. He’s got the silver fox thing going for him. 😄

Thing is, I spent last night sleeping very badly & was not at my most energetic. Add to that the warmth & closeness of being masked in the dark &, well…I dozed off for about 20 minutes before the intermission.

Thankfully I didn’t snore. 😅

I chugged a coffee at intermission & was fine for the rest of the show. And I’m glad I did so, it was worth the time. If you happen to be in #VictoriaBC, do check it out. https://www.belfry.bc.ca/yaga/ Tight, funny, kinda sexy. Ukrainian/Indigenous NA fusion isn’t something one sees every day and I feel like they pulled it off well. The acting is solid and it’s a fun show. 👍👍

Had a fantastic weekend at the Rifflandia festival in Victoria, BC. So many great performances from the likes of Iggy Pop, Suicidal Tendencies, Marc Rebillet, Mavis Staples, Salt N Pepa, Herbie Hancock and, of course, Melanie C. I'm still mentally processing all the awesomeness.

Hey #VictoriaBC and also #Canadian folks in general!

This Wednesday the anti-trans/queer MAGA-#Canada types are holding a big thing at multiple government buildings around the country. Counter-protests are being organized at as many as possible. If you live in Victoria, I’ve included the two separate actions in-town below. There’s also a Facebook group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/325603693311023/ where people are listing their local stuff.

Please attend one of at all possible. And show these #%*^ers they’re not the majority. Regardless if you can attend, boost this please, ffs, don’t like it and move on. 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈💙

Later we see a layer of altocumulus appear and disappear. There are bands across the layer where local convection is organised (or there are shorter wavelength waves travelling in that layer).

Finally, we see some strong, shallow convection in a layer of altocumulus. We can see fall streaks, cloud pulled down in a stream of cold air and raindrops, that quickly evaporate in drier air below.

Greater #VictoriaBC #cycling. If you enjoy the new fixed #LochsideTrail at the Heritage Society, thank me (and the #CRD 😜). I chased down an employee and asked them to check it and fix it. I'm also responsible for the repaired manhole at the S-bend north of Borden and McKenzie. That one took a lot of complaining (#Saanich's manhole, CRD trail). Remember, the trail network is the transportation network. Don't let municipalities ignore them.

The newly paved trail. I went from witnessing a crash in a group straight to the CRD and they fixed it!

Any particular recommendations for a random internet dude you know almost nothing about?

I like coffee shops, bookstores, local's favorite's greasy spoons, and micro brew. A nice park or forest to hike or run through is great too. If it is a thing in Canada, farmer's markets are cool.

Public health in the 21st century, #VictoriaBC #CRD. It seems the Health Authority has a new way to manage 'outbreaks' without calling them 'outbreaks'.

The new approach may be reasonable and based on the best science but even the staff at the hospitals appear not to know about it.

"It is very clear that the word 'outbreak' has very negative connotations to the public and would have media attention..."

Wastewater #COVID surveillance in #VictoriaBC. Numbers are up. We'll have to wait a week or more for the latest numbers because even though samples are collected three times per week they are only reported every two weeks (apparently).

It's back to school so wear a mask. Do not contribute to the ongoing spread of this disease.

It looks like 10% of infections lead to lasting harm and this is still a leading cause of death for all age groups, even children.

Two charts from the BC CDC. The top graph is a time-series of Load per Capita against date. The y-axis scale is poor for the data shown, it rises to 600 units but these data only reach 200 units. The bottom chart is a column graph of percent change against data. It shows that in August the amount of SARS-CoV-2 E gene in wastewater has been increasing.

Here's the Month in a Minute sky video from #UVic for August. There's some missing data this month. This camera looks north and records an image every five seconds. These are converted to daily videos and uploaded to youtube here https://www.youtube.com/@victoriaweathercam/videos

#Saanich #VictoriaBC

A grid of daily sky videos arranged in rows of six days. Each video shows the changing sky as the day progresses. As I travelled home, cycling, I passed a soccer camp with small children out in a large playing field. Lighting wasn't striking nearby but that's actually not a good indicator of safety. We don't get many thunderstorms in Greater #VictoriaBC, not even one per year on average. As a result people are simply not aware of the danger and of the simple rules to follow. A soccer camp should have moved indoors, or been cancelled while the storm was active. Lightning can kill. #Saanich 3/3

Ed Wiebe

#VictoriaBC rarely sees a thunderstorm. The frequency is less than one per year. So, when one passes over we notice! Thunderstorms are accompanied by strong vertical motion, and vertical motion changes the air pressure so we can record it on a barometer. I measure pressure at one minute (averaged) intervals at #UVic. Here's what I recorded over night on 2023-08-29.

That first pulse of pressure measures a change of more than 3 hectopascal over 24 minutes. That's a huge change. 1/3

A time-series chart of pressure against time of day. Midway along there a series of rapidly changing pulses are seen. The pressure rises and falls again, nine times in quick succession.
Ed Wiebe

Finally, here's an animation of the annual pattern of insolation at #UVic. Yellower colours are higher intensity than orange, white is highest, black is zero, or missing data. Each day of the year is a vertical stripe. Time of day is shown on the vertical axes in hours or minutes. #VictoriaBC

Summer days are a lot 'longer' than winter days!

This is an animation of the annual patter of incoming solar radiation (insolation) in watts per square metre. The pattern is narrow in the winter and broadens in the summer. Days are longer in the summer so there are more minutes per day with sunlight. The intensity also increases in summer. The sun is higher in the sky (at noon) in summer so it is more intense. Some days are seen to be dark. These are cloudy days.

#Lightning is pretty rare in #VictoriaBC (like, not even once per year on average). There has been a bit of action over Juan de Fuca Strait in the last few minutes. Some loud thunder shaking buildings at #UVic that also shows up on my home seismometer. #ShakeNet #Saanich

This peaceful protest at #BritishColumbia #BCgovernment #MinistryOfEnvironment building in #VictoriaBC was about the only time that I thanked cops.

It was because an angry woman, who was walking by, opted to start trying to verbally abuse me & 2 other women chained up with me. She was growing more aggressive & cops told her to leave or be arrested. They also told landlord of building we had a right to protest & refused to arrest us when demanded.

I give credit when it's due & never otherwise.

I really believe bringing two different generations together, for common causes of local food security & climate action via having gardens - benefits both generations & contributes to positive community building.
