My #Dad and I have successfully turned my 11 year old nephew into a fan of #vietnamese #food, made some Bò Lúc Lắc today and he ate some. He's normally a picky eater but has been getting more adventurous, and today was a hit with him. He's already asking "When can we eat some more of that stuff?"

My dad and I have taken to trying to #cook #Vietnamese #food at home despite us not being Vietnamese. Our first go at vietnamese eggrolls was a disaster, but our Bò Lúc Lắc was damn near perfect *EXCEPT* the cut of meat we used was slightly too tough. So I ask #cooks of mastodon: give me a recommendation for a really tender cut of #beef that goes well with Bò Lúc Lắc please!
Before French colonization, the #Vietnamese didn't make use of dairy products (milk, cheese, butter) in any significant way. That meant that French residents didn't have a local market to turn to to fill their dairy needs. Word of this gap in the market got out pretty quickly. Tamil migrants from southern India moved to Saigon and quickly set up dairies. There were 26 such dairies in Saigon by the late 1880s, and they all provided door-to-door delivery of fresh milk (both goat and cow) daily.
Imported canned milk followed, and was not targeting a lack of refrigeration (as the vast majority of customers were concentrated in the city and had access to fresh milk). Rather, its marketing angle was French nostalgia and racial fears. Well-to-do French residents paid a premium for the canned milk with its evocations of the French countryside and promises of uncontaminated French origins.
When they started approaching the Vietnamese market, they played up to the perception that being upwardly mobile meant buying imported European goods and not "inferior" local ones. An early newspaper ad targeting the Vietnamese market showed a Vietnamese servant opening a back gate onto the street, confronting a dark-skinned man holding two milk bottles, and telling him to go away, because, "your milk smells like hairy goat, and this house drinks only La Petite Fermière."

I have tried learning #Vietnamese the hard way, casually looking into vocabulary after classes, and quietly contemplating my Anki. The learning curve (rather, a pronunciation curve) is too steep to not fail miserably.
Using this as a pledge, I will go the input way forward (consume and listen and note) and will practice each morning for x minutes. Vietsubs, op-eds, Bing translations, spaced rep—here I come. #learning #ethnography

There was this one #Vietnamese restaraunt in #phoenix , #arizona I went with my family last week or two, and despite being small and quaint the food was good! The biggest problem was the large TV screen playing #foxnews in the background. At one point it went on and on about how ridiculous the idea of male pregnancy 🫃 is, and how it’s part of this agenda to erase women or something.

Dips were #saté (#peanut, #coconutMilk, #chili), #sweetChili (both homemade) and #Kikkoman soy sauce.

1. I'm really glad to see more people/corporations using #LunarNewYear instead of just #ChineseNewYear. CNY should of course be used when referring to that particular event, but not every culture celebrating Lunar New Year this weekend are celebrating Chinese New Year.
