Les Paul "Goofus / Sugar Sweet" US Capitol 1950 (c. 1951 repress?)
Les Paul still holds up. Goofus is an early example of studio trickery with sped up guitars overdubbed one track at a time.
Capitol Records didn't take sides in the format war, and put out records in both 45 and 33. When multispeed turntables appeared, they needed to way to play on all. Hence, the short lived knockout center. Unusual for the US, but more common in Europe.

Morphine - The Night
It's weird how this album got buried/lost because of Mark Sandman's unexpected death of a heart attack, at 46, before its release.
I'd seen Treat Her Right numerous times at the Plough and Stars, back in the day, and Morphine continued in the "less is more" vein. The Night adds a bit more to that...and is a fantastic record.
Light in the Attic records re-released it as a double 45RPM LP with an informative booklet. Sounds great!

Today’s listening is ‘Crises’, the 1983 album by Mike Oldfield.
The main reason for my owning this album is that it contains the classic hit single ‘Moonlight Shadow’ (sung by Maggie Reilly), but it’s a pretty good album apart from that highlight.
There’s a track co-written and sung by Jon Anderson (they should have done a whole album together!) and ‘Shadow On The Wall’ is a perennial fave in this household, with the lyric changed to ‘Squirrel On The Wall’!

“Lazy Afternoon” by Pete La Roca (1965)
https://songwhip.com/petelaroca/lazy-afternoon
Early morning quiet, and this track suits quite nicely.
The debut album by drummer #PeteLaRoca as a bandleader.
The track seems to float on the ether, subtly shifting and changing through the beautiful interplay among the band, Joe Henderson on sax, Steve Swallow on bass, Steve Kuhn on piano and, of course, La Roca on drums.

Probably one of my favorite album covers and an incredibly fun spin of music, too. Check him out if you’re not familiar! #music #vinyl #VinylRecords #vinylcollection #nowPlaying #louisprima

Between me and my son we just bought like 20+ records. (Most second hand) #Vinyl
@igorpianist Das neue Album #Fantasia ist sensationell und beeindruckend! Aber warum (noch?) nicht auch auf #Vinyl?
Parannoul - After The Magic
The anonymous, Seoul-based artist who is Parannoul has really hit this one out of the park. It's a mix of dream pop, shoegaze, synth, etc - layers and layers of (self-played?) instrumentation with vocal melodies mixed low...except when they're not. :-)
It's a lot. In a good way.
This was released digitally back in February but I've been waiting for the LP, which finally shipped. Worth the wait!

Glüme - Main Character
Hm. There's some musical interest here on some tracks (she works with various collaborators, including STRFKR, Rufus Wainright and of Montreal), but it's pretty clear she wants to be Lana Del Rey a lot of the time and, well, isn't.
Also, hard to sympathize with the "being a child actor was hard/bad" theme, since it was Glüme's dream...especially over two LPs. The experience isn't "universalized" and so it's less compelling.

The sultry sound of Paul Desmond paired with the gritty quality of Mulligan’s baritone playing on top of Dave Brubeck makes for some fine listening this morning. #Nowplaying #jazz #vinyl

Sobs - Air Guitar
First real album from the Singaporean Pop group.
Catchy, fun, sugar-sweet pop.

Bought a #Vinyl Record and found a banger that isn't on #Spotify.

Morgen starte ich mal den Versuch, Schallplatten zu digitalisieren. Mal schauen, was dabei rauskommt.

Joe Walsh - The Smoker You Drink, the Player You Get
Everyone's heard Rocky Mountain Way, the lead-off track on this classic album from 1973. But this, the 2nd (and last) LP Walsh would record with Barnstorm, is not just rockers. Songs vary in style from almost jazz to flute-driven ballads, from folk rock to whatever Happy Ways is.
Walsh's best written, played and recorded album.
This is the flawless Analogue Productions remaster/repress.

Santigold - Santigold
Once of the nice things about VMP is that you get introduced to things that you missed the first time around. Here's one of those.
Obviously popular, I'd completely missed it the first time through...15 years ago. It's a great mix of styles, executed with verve...pretty obvious why it did well.

#NowPlaying: #ABC - Beauty Stab
1983 Dutch pressing.
Although I previously mentioned that ABC had a disappointing sophomore album, this actually is my favourite by them and my 7th most listened to album the past 365 days. ABC's sleek and #NewRomantic style perfectly fits the rocky direction this album took. The title track is sleek and tight and Love's a Dangerous Language has got some very good guitar work. Not a bad track on here. The font is terrible though.

#NowPlaying Miles Davis/Gil Evans. Feels like we're entering the right season for this.
It's considered the weakest of the 4 Davis/Evans collaborations, but I prefer it to Porgy & Bess.
#jazz #thirdstream #MilesDavis #vinyl

Pretenders - Relentless
I love Chrissy Hynde's singing, I really do. But since the first incredible album, and one could argue the first three, The Pretenders have been making albums one notch above and one notch below "good" ever since.
This is a "one notch above good" album.

#NowPlaying: #ClassixNouveaux - La Verité
1982 Japanese pressing.
I was at a record store in Dordrecht and they had an entire shelf of Japanese imports, which was very cool. There they always have this luxurious OBI strip which makes the cover more special in my opinion. The album is some really good and grandiose #newromantic and especially the first (real) track Is It a Dream is a banger. I also love how the tracks seem to often segue.

Ride - Tarantula
Woof. It'd been a while, and frankly I wanted to support the band that'd gotten back together, put together some good new records and also good shows. And so, I bought this...their worst record.
And it is, without question, their worst. It sounds like...Oasis on a bad day. So I guess it makes sense that Andy Bell would go on to join them after Ride exploded.
Glad they were able to bury the hatchet and come back. They were better than this.

#NowPlaying: #ThomasDolby - The Flat Earth
1984 German pressing.
I actually went to the record store yesterday to pick this one #vinyl up that I kept seeing in the shelf as I got it in my recommended on last.fm. This is some really sophisticated #synthpop. I have read that Dolby usually writes humorous music, but this seems way calmer than that. I really quite like this album and will certainly listen to it more!

Eddie "Lockjaw" David + Johnny Griffin - The Tenor Scene
Two guys with very different tone playing up a storm with great backing. Another Rudy Van Gelder Prestige gem.

#NowPlaying: #NewOrder - The John Peel Sessions 1982
2020 #vinyl reissue for RSD.
I have been gawking at this in the store for a couple years now but yesterday it suddenly was 50% off so I finally got it. This is not just a Peel session: two tracks on here weren't recorded or released on anything else it seems. Turn the Heater On, a cover of Keith Hudson, and Too Late, which is just a rare NO track. I also love the version of 586 on here, my fave!

#NowPlaying: Night School (4) "Invoke"

Alabama Shakes - Sound & Color
You don't need me to tell you this is a good record. Just sad that they've been on hiatus for so long (and likely forever).
This is the deluxe edition with the additional live tracks. And given they were a fierce live act...

If you're into Vinyl. HHV got a big sale right now. #vinyl

#NowPlaying After re-watching Bernstein's interpretation of Romeo & Juliet (I *still* can't get to grips with musicals) at the weekend, I was compelled to hear a much-preferred version.
This Soviet release (on the state-run Melodiya label) seemed so exotic when I bought it as a young man from a charity shop in the UK. I certainly didn't foresee getting to see Prokofiev's ballet at the Bolshoi in Moscow in person.
It's very unlikely I will ever return to Russia.
#classical #Prokofiev #vinyl

I have made this as an executive summary of the last 25 years of my life.👇🏻🤪🤷🏻♂️ #Vinyl #VinylRecords

Gov't Mule featuring John Scofield - Sco-Mule
Not that we needed more proof after MMSW, but here's another example of John Scofield sitting in with an existing band and it's like he's a missing piece of the puzzle.
This terrific live recording from 1999 starts out with a blazing version of Scofield's Hottentot and everyone shines throughout.

#OnthisDay in 1969, #TheBeatles released their swan song album, #AbbeyRoad. It’s their only UK album cover without the artist or album name. Macmillan, the photographer, stood on a step-ladder and took 6 shots of them crossing the road while a policeman held up traffic. McCartney is barefoot. Harrison is the only one not in a Tommy Nutter suit. The number plate of the Volkswagen Beetle was stolen many times after the release of the album.
#Music #Rock #GreatRockAlbums #Vinyl #DogsofMastodon

#NowPlaying: #SpandauBallet - Diamond
1982 Spanish pressing.
Subtitled "Diamante" for if you didn't understand the title. Sophomore albums are often a disappointment after a great debut (ABC, A✓:, U2, etc.), and this is no exception. There's some interesting music on here though: Paint Me Down is amazingly catchy, and Coffee Club has got a quirky rhythm. I don't think this album is half bad, but not exceptionally good.

#NowPlaying: #JoyDivision - Still
2022 reissue on 2x clear #vinyl.
For some reason I listened more to this album than JD's greats. I feel like this album shows a bit more range and diversity with songs from different times in their period. I really like the live show as well, although it's disappointing that the start of Ceremony is cut off. These Days would have been a great addition as that's my favourite JD track. Is this even a comp actually?

Illuminati Hotties - Let Me Do One More
You've likely heard Sarah Tudzin's engineering and production work (Slowdive, boygenius, Weyes Blood, etc). But her own band is great!
This album came out a few years ago and really shows off her writing and playing. (Great live show, too.)
https://youtu.be/RTTTEfurozI?si=nypTe-TYTgpVQrTB
https://youtu.be/fvQCWX8w_Yw
https://youtu.be/6keRzhAqTeE

Tricky - Maxinquaye
Despite the imitators that came out after, a singular accomplishment, and almost as much of a Martina Topley-Bird album as a Tricky one...her vocals breaking through the deep, paranoid murk are critical to the LP's success.
This is getting re-released/re-visited in the next month or so; it seemed like a good time to listen to the original again. Remains great.

The #MilesDavis record I missed at the flea market because I arrived 30 seconds later than the guy in front of me is still niggling me 4 days later...

@Kitty @neurothing #NowPlaying for #MusicWomenWednesday is the album Out For Blood by Lita Ford which her debut solo album from 1983 after the Runaways broke up.
Starting the morning with a little bit of Whipped Cream & Other Delights -- there are worse ways to get started :) Can't get too many horns!
This was one of the #LP #Records from last night's foray to #RecordCollectorsParadise
The copy they had in the bins was great physically (and a UK pressing), but for me, part of the attraction was the seminal cover.
The UK cover was thin and water-damaged.
So they rooted around in the back-of-house storage and found a physically great (Canadian) version with the cover still in shrink. #Vinyl Win!

Gerry Rafferty - City to City
Waah-waah-waah it's too slick waaaaahhhh!
This is as perfect a piece of pop craftsmanship as you'll find, and a defining record of the 70s. You just *know* you can hear that Ravenscroft sax hook in your head right now...but it's not just that. Every song is chock-a-block with great sonic details.
Yes, it's polished. Why should that be held against it?
(Recent re-release with extra material; = I have an original, too.)
Catherine Wheel - Happy Days
OK, sure, this isn't as good as Chrome and Ferment; instead of having a sophomore slump, they had a junior slumpette. Norton streamlined their sound somewhat, and on CD or streaming, it's a little much all the way through.
But--on LP you get a break every few songs, and that honestly improves the listening experience. And anyway, any album with the song "Eat My Dust You Insensitive Fuck" gets my $.

I also bought this in the record store sale yesterday. It's cool how this was randomly packed in varying colours with differing rarity. I was unlucky and got the least rare colour, but I don't mind as I think this is the coolest one. This album hearkens back to the time around acr:mcr, whereas their later 1982 more to Sextet. I'm quite pleased after this first listen already! And Denise Johnson's on it!
A/B testing for the win! Received my new (old) headshell today. My Akai AP-Q41 #turntable uses a unique headshell so to easily / quickly compare my new #Grado Green cartridge against the original (factory) #Ortofon SMB 12 I needed a second.
I suspected the SMB 12 was showing signs of age (40+ yrs)
To test, I listened to my 1980 copy of #StarWars The Empire Strikes Back #soundtrack, specifically to Yoda's theme; a somewhat slow and delicate piece.
The album was old, and both cartridges picked up the surface noise, but it was more noticeable with the Ortofon.
I needed to turn up the preamp for the Grado. Impressed that it really separated the instruments and gave me a good visual soundstage, where the Ortofon kinda mushed them together - the harp especially did not standout as it was with the Grado.
Overall, nice to be able to justify the upgrade and purchase, though I'm keeping the Ortofon as it's 'original' to the turntable.
#NowPlaying: #ACertainRatio - To Each...
2017 European reissue on 2x red #vinyl at 45 RPM.
When I walked past my frequented record store today I saw there was a massive sale going on and the record I saw lying in the shelf for months was 12 euros cheaper than normal. So I had to buy it. This is my favourite a✓: album, it blends #PostPunk and #funk so perfectly, with chilling brass sections and funky rhythms. The Fox for one starts off with an amazing drum riff!
I'm #NowPlaying a slightly crackly, but well-loved #vinyl copy of #PinkFloyd's Wish You Were Here for its 48th anniversary.
