Listening to Markéta Janoušková: L’astre Bleu
It is a lovely album. Markéta has intensely incredible skill as a #violinist. This not the type of #violin performance we hear often and that is obvious from the first listening. I bought the album when it was first released out of curiosity and it demonstrated one occasion where I somehow used my better judgment, as it is an outstanding album.
She is not as popular in the English speaking world, but is well known.

Сегодня я покажу вам Бурре и Жигу из партиты И.С. Баха №3 (ми мажор).
Пока только разобрал, стараюсь держать темп и показывать динамику. Пока путаюсь в штрихах и аппликатуре, в часть нот не попадаю, слишком слышны переходы и надо доучить конец. Зачем-то показываю слабые доли в начале. Надо поучиться переносить смычок со струны на струну, вести мелодическую линию, соединять смычки. А вы думали я Хилари Хан?

I can always tell when Fabio Biondi is playing violin. Of baroque violinists he is one of the most distinctive. He tends to use vibrato more liberally than most baroque violinists. This perhaps reflects more influence from Geminiani’s violin treatise which seems to recommend greater use of vibrato than Leopold Mozart’s treatise, iirc.
He also likes to playfully mix up accents in repeated phrases, creating little surprising syncopations.

Still vibing on how this latest release turned out.
In many of the #recordings of my past #compositions that feature #violin, I found them too harsh in the high end frequencies, even after trying lots of different bowing styles and articulations. I've now leaned into using cello and double bass players playing in their highest registers for the same notes, getting much more rounded and gritty sound as a result. I love it!
Next up for #EuropeanFolkDay, here's Anglo-French wonders, #Topette!! The name comes from the Auvergne region of France and is a regional salut similar to "cheers".

I have now practised fiddle every day for 50 days.
To be clear: it sounds dreadful. I will not be posting audio or video any time soon. But it sounds dreadful in interesting ways, and it's a tiny bit less dreadful every day.
I played a little violin as a small child, and when I gave it up, aged nine or so, I remember being told 'you will regret this when you are older, you know' I also remember thinking nah, I really won't.

So I finally broke down and started back on the fiddle after a break of more than forty years.

I have Suzuki book 1, Wohlfarht, and the Berthoud Learn To Play Irish Fiddle book. About to book a lesson with a local teacher to help me avoid Bad Habits.

My #orchestra's May concert is online. It's a pretty fresh set of music by American composers - #JohnAdams, #LeonardBernstein, #aaroncopland and more. I'm realizing I could be a bit more "economical" with my bowing, and stop making faces when I goof up...but more importantly, this is just such a GOOD GROUP of people. And I'm proud of the orchestra for challenging itself to do diverse repertoire.

Starting to focus on finding a local #orchestra. Musician CVs are a thing. Which is kind of funny, because I've had a private teacher for all of 3 months, I never studied music outside of middle/high school orchestra, and I can't remember most of the pieces my past orchestras played. 😅

I was in town this afternoon and walking up Oliver Plunkett Street, came across Ryan Parsons, a very talented violinist busking on the street. A sizeable crowd gathered around in front of me, enjoying the music. The gentleman in the background of this photo was evidentially enjoying the music too, waving his hand in time with the beat of the tune.

I maaay have been getting distracted by all of the things, including this wonderful piece that I actually wrote out the sheet music for ages ago but never got around to completing the recording/video (I'm still trying to figure out if I can record at my computer without just showing the whole world how bad I am at sorting, or if I can get a decent recording situation away from the coputer for the video for the melody :growlithe_hmm: )
I sometimes do a "guess that piece" thing, but with both the bass and harmony parts, I feel like 90% of my followers here could not just name the game it comes from, but the name of the track, too (and knowing you all, probably hum/whistle/play the melody :zerotwo_excited: )

There’s very often a “theme of the week” in my teaching, usually accidentally.
This week the theme is “Close your eyes. You can feel if the bow is straight, I promise you can.”

My duet partner, Ella, and I had our first rehearsal in over 3 years this week and...honestly, it felt really nice :espeon_love: Our sheet music is a mess, my ears were so out of practice that they literally had trouble telling whether the violin and ocarina were in tune or not, even with a steady note, and we were, without a doubt, rusty :blob_sweat:
Despite all that, we had fun playing (and talking) and the rehabilitation process is well on its way :cat_giggle:

It's one of, if not the only, Kajiura Yuki piece that I've recorded, but it's one of my old favourites. Aside from BT being a character I like, something about this track spoke to me and I ended up writing 3 parts for the violin to go on top of the piano part in the original :zerotwo_learn:
Unlike most of my other recordings, I had the time to go through and put 2 violins on each of the 3 parts, giving a bit more of the silkiness of orchestras compared to the more distinct sound of 1 violin per part in a small ensemble :cat_ooh:

@viralvulpes performed this gorgeous rendition of Someone Like You a while back, and from the night I heard it, it made me want to record parts for it, but my recording equipment was scattered at the time. Fast forward to a few nights ago when I set everything back up, and then last night when I did trouble-shooting, arranging, recording, and mixing :panda_yay: :shiba_excited:

Aside from adding a bit of violin to the piece, I also did some EQing and a couple of minor effects to both bring out what was already gorgeous about Fox's recording as well as help blend the two tracks together (having different recording environments and equipment is a royal pain for this :blobfox_laugh_sweat: )
After sending him the finished file, he also gave me permission to post it here for you to hear. I hope I've done the Fox's original justice :bear_love: :espeon_love:

So I have a group of students who have some intensive auditions coming up in a couple months. We’re working on their three-octave scales like beavers, sometimes spending 1/3 to 1/2 of their lessons on scales.
What this means is that I’m rapidly getting sick of listening to/teaching scales, so my students who *don’t* have imminent auditions are often getting off without having to play scales for me at all. This is neither sustainable nor wise. 😅 #Violin #ViolinLessons #Violinist

I had to bring it a 5th up compared to the solo arrangement I normally play to make it so that there's space under the 1st violin part for the 2nd part to actually move :bugcat_dance: but it still feels like the same gorgeous piece I play at least a few times a week :espeon_love:
Thinking back, this was the first audio CD that I owned. After seeing it in theatres with a childhood friend when it first aired in Japan, he got me the CD of it and it's a piece and memory that I cherish :blobhaj_love:
It seems it's also left quite the impression on the bride because she was the one that suggested this piece for the processional. I can't wait to play it on the day of (which is fast approaching)

Hi Fedi/Mastodon, I'm Octavia, a 30ish Japanese and USian violinist (and composer) whose mother introduced her to the violin at age 5 and Super Mario Brothers at age 3. This would go on to have profound consequences, chief amongst which was that the majority of the activities I enjoy involve fingertip dexterity. The secondary effect was that I would go on to use the classical training I received throughout my childhood to, for the most part, play soundtracks while letting my classical repertoire languish :blobhaj_peek:
Nintendo classics like Mario, Zelda, Kirby, Pokemon, and Smash, JRPG classics like Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy (IX and X specifically), movie soundtracks including a bunch of Studio Ghibli/Miyazaki Hayao works, Disney, Lord of the Rings, Pirates of the Carribbean, and Master & Commander (which is just my excuse to play the Bach Cello Suite no. 1: Prelude :leafeon_giggle: ), and a few anime pieces here and there (along with at least one My Little Pony theme :blobhaj_jam: ) are the bulk of what I play when I perform solo. I do play classical pieces here and there, but they mostly tend to be various movements from the Bach Cello Suites, along with a smattering of Celtic music, though I try to mix everything together in my sets, leaving people guessing as to what's a soundtrack and what's not :blobhaj_peek:
I perform at various conventions in the Pacific Northwest of the US (formerly in Brook and Link cosplays), whether inside or outside, and also perform as part of Troupe Seven Stars at faires in the area over the summer months while filling the rest of my time playing solo or ensemble shows, mostly near Portland. About half of Saturdays are spent performing at Fleur de Lis Bakery & Cafe in the Hollywood district.
I tend to spend my free time dissociating in the shower, overcoming whatever ADHD lobs my way, and running out the door like an alternate-universe fusion of Bilbo Baggins and the March Hare from Alice in Wonderland (though, to my astonishment, I've only been late to 2 gigs in my life that I remember). What crumbs of time are spared from those tend to be spent on gaming, reading manga/watching anime, listening to and sharing music (yes, mostly soundtracks), and enjoying what the internet has to offer.
Aside from needing to hop instances, I've found my time on the Fedi to be enjoyable, and I hope to keep meeting interesting, genuine people and sharing time and conversations together :espeon_love:
