The Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists was founded in 1929. Its fascist and openly anti-Semitic ideology was that Jews and Russian-speaking citizens must be removed from Ukrainian society at any cost. They enthusiastically collaborated with Nazi Germany in the 1940s to exterminate Jews, Russians, and anyone who attempted to protect them. The OUN was only forced out of Ukraine after the USSR took control of the country, upon the end of the Second World War.
The Ukrainian fascists found new homes in Canada, where the ideology of anti-communism was extremely potent. Peter Vronsky, a former documentary Director at the National Film board revealed that:
“a little known US-financed group in Canada called the "Canadian Christian Council for the Resettlement of Refugees" privately lobbied the Canadian government in the 1950s to admit former Nazi Waffen-SS 'foreign legion volunteers' like the Moslem Bosnian-Albanian Nazi SS troopers, Ukrainian SS volunteers, and others, to come to Sudbury wholesale to work in the mines.”
The Jewish News of North California reported that the Canadian government admitted more than 2,000 Ukrainian members of the Nazi 14th SS Division in the 1950s. This was done to crush the burgeoning leftist Ukrainian diaspora that was building up during the previous few years.
One way of getting into postwar Canada "was by showing the SS tattoo," Canadian historian Irving Abella told 60 Minutes interviewer Mike Wallace in 1997. "This proved that you were an anti-Communist."

My late father, Joseph George Bell, was a farmer in #NorthKelsey during #WW2 and volunteered for #AirRaidPrecautions, later known as #CivilDefence. He told a few stories.
One of these stories was of a visit to an RAF Control Room where he saw an attack on Sheffield by air-launched V1 flying bombs. This did happen, but the traceable history is a little different.
There was a #SectorControlRoom at RAF Kirton-in-Lindsey, which is pretty close. The #Sector it covered runs across England, #Lincolnshire to #Liverpool
There was such a air-launched V1 attack, on Christmas Eve 1944, aimed at #Manchester. I have not found accounts of any others. Several V1s fell short, at least 1 near to Sheffield.
To get over the southern end of the #Pennines these missiles would have had to cruise at over 2000 feet, higher than usual for a V1. The launch point would be roughly as far East as #Norwich
Air-launched cruise missiles are older than you think.

Hitting bombers at a German airbase with an Ilyushin Il-2 1941 (2 series).

Sugar
Butter
Milk* (optional)

- Sprinkle sugar onto the bread
- Pour hot coffee & milk* over the bread
-Add curls of butter to the top

Andrée Geulen was personally responsible for the placement of 300 Jewish children into refuge.
This photo was taken after liberation and shows Geulen holding two young children whom she helped rescue during the war. (5/6)
This photo of Geulen was featured in an exhibition that first appeared at The Cooper Union in 2005. The exhibit, "Resistance and Memory in Belgium 1940 – 1945: Multiple Narratives,"
was curated by Professor Anne Griffin of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, The Cooper Union. (4/6)
One of the most awe-inspiring photographs of the European anti-fascist resistance was an unposed photo of Geulen taken by a street photographer in Brussels as she was on her way to rescue two Jewish children.
As she walks down the sidewalk, a German officer ominously walks a few paces behind her. (3/6)
Geulen’s role with the CDJ was to persuade Jewish parents in Brussels to give up their children to the care of CDJ “who would place them as ‘hidden children’ in the care of Catholic families, schools, & religious institutions under false identities.”
She would meet the children and accompany them to the family, school, or monastery where they would be sheltered. (2/6)
Sep 6, 1921: On this date Andrée Geulen was born in Schaerbeek, Belgium.
She was a member of the Belgian Resistance during WW2, specifically working to hide Jewish children from the Nazis. She became involved in the Comité de Défense des Juifs (CDJ) in the Spring of 1943 and remained active with the CDJ until Sept 1944 when Brussels was liberated by the Allies. (1/6)

As the years pass, I’m more and more convinced that #WW2 began on 7 July 1937, when Japan invaded China.
The 1 September 1939 invasion of Poland is an easy to remember date and is Eurocentric, which make sense when you look at who won the war and wrote the history books.
