#JetFighters chase small plane in #Washington area before it crashes in #Virginia

The #UnitedStates scrambled F-16 fighter jets in a #Supersonic chase of a light aircraft with an unresponsive pilot that violated airspace in the #WashingtonDC area and later crashed into the mountains of Virginia, officials said.

Four people were on board the Cessna, a source familiar with the matter said. A Cessna Citation can carry seven to 12 passengers.

The plant in the first photo may not look particularly impressive, but I assure you that it has a story. This is the Western tall penstemon (P. hesperius), which was believed extinct until 2008. Before that, it hadn't been seen since around 1930. P. hesperius likes places that get flooded once in awhile and it gets much bigger than most penstemons -- up to 4 feet tall, if memory serves. (Most penstemons top out at 2 to 3 feet or lower.)

Penstemon hesperius growing in a Portland, Oregon garden. It's a pretty nondescript plant at this point, with a few flowers just starting to develop.
Penstemon hesperius flower stalk on a wild plant. Flowers are trumpet shaped, colored pink with a purplish tint at the tips and bases. Each flower is an inch or so long and the flower stalk is 6 to 8 in. tall. Photo taken in 2016 by Roger T George.

I love these two opposing photos of Table Mountain and the ridge that leads up to it. The views face each other and combined, they paint a picture of the entire area. I had to stand in a moderately, though most would say extremely, dangerous spot to get the first one.

The Forces of Collaboration. In Defeated France (1942).

Not far ahead, a storm-battered but still alive evergreen also stands right beside the edge of the cliff and rises above us. Storm waves are breaking on a deserted beach of dark beige sand at the base of the cliffs about 200 feet (about 60 meters) below us. We are in bright sunshine although the visible sky to our east remains cloudy. We are standing next to a rustic fenceline of unfinished wooden posts supporting several strands of barbed wire. Beyond the fence, a small river runs in a graceful S curve between two pastures of lush green grass speckled with scattered yellow dandelions and small white wildflowers. Pale golden brown water grasses line the riverbanks. A small grove of beautiful trees with very light gray bark grows along a short stretch of riverbank to our left. In the distance a range of rugged green mountains runs across the entire horizon, just brushing the clouds in a few spots.

Rowe traveled with other white supremacists all the way from #Washington to be outnumbered and opposed by a larger crowd who came out to celebrate the first formal #Pride event in "over a decade."
