Cold Plunge

For #WaterfallWednesday this week, here is Gullfoss ('Golden Falls'), probably one of the best known cataracts in #Iceland.

Hvítá river flows down a wide staircase of rocks - behind us in this shot - and then plunges 32 m/105 ft into Vondagljúfur canyon.

This particular photo was taken the first time we saw Gullfoss in 2014. I was completely fascinated by it!

The lower two-thirds of the left side of this shot is filled by a waterfall plunging into a canyon. The spray is rising all the way up to the top of the photo. At the top right is a cliff edge, on it the tiny figures of spectators can be seen. On the lower right is the opposite bank of the ravine, covered in dark mossy grass.

Once, when my spouse was a kid on a trip to Rocky Mountain National Park, the family went on a hike to Sky pond. The trail passes Alberta Falls, a popular destination since it’s scenic and fairly accessible. Just off the main road, they passed an unhappy family with an unhappy child complaining about the short walk, sobbing, “If you’ve seen one waterfall, you’ve seen them all!”

This park is in a sleepy Spanish town along the way from Santiago de Compostela and Lamego, Portugal. The river Arnoia has recently flooded due to unusually heavy rainfall, but the local citizenry have been quick to restore this local treasure.

For this week's waterfall, here's one from Pisgah National Forest near Brevard, NC. I found this waterfall a little difficult to photograph. The shot that I wanted wasn't going to work well in the conditions that I had when there. I ended up doing this one, which I do like. I think I could have sat there for days.

This is Ravine Falls, which is really hard to get a picture of because it is deep within an inaccessible shale gorge right in the heart of one of #Cleveland’s suburbs.
