@plaguepoems

Dear Plaguepoet. Thank you for sharing your poems.

The poem about the lonely masker and his childhood teacher speaks a simple truth. Many of us are despondent: we cannot understand the surrender all around us; often we feel we don't do enough. In this poem I recognise the childlike moral truth: that by standing up, I assert my humanity.

As a boy I looked ahead to future challenges, uncertain how I would meet them. Now I find that I did not altogether fail.

Long covid can impair quality of life more than advanced cancers

Health-related quality of life scores were also lower than those of people with advanced metastatic cancers, such as stage 4 lung cancer. Overall, the impact of long Covid on the daily activities of patients was worse than that for stroke patients and comparable to people with Parkinson’s disease.

Tips for folks experiencing their first wildfire (or wildfire smoke) season: 🔥

- close your windows/doors to prevent smoke coming into your home 🪟
- use HEPA or CR boxes to filter smoke from air that does come in
- wear a high quality mask (KN-95 or better) to protect your lungs when outside 😷

Even if you don’t “believe” in #COVID, let’s all “believe” in the reality that smoke is bad for your lungs. Mask up!

My eyes are burning, my nose is stuffy, I used my inhaler today.

The Canadian smoke is dreadful.......

Can't believe I survived 5 months in Steubenville, Ohio in 1967, when steel mills were polluting the air. Smog as thick as fog, leaving black soot on everything.

And no masks.

Dear 55,000,000 people in the Northeast dealing with smoke from the forest fires:

Sucks, doesn't it.

In the West it happens to us every year. Usually far worse. Yes I saw your video... you almost couldn't even see across the Hudson River.

When it does it here, we can't see across our own property.

And then the King Asshole in Washington DC (yeah, the orange fucker that moved to Floriduh...) tells us to "rake our forests" a little better. Maybe you should put him in touch with the Canadians so he can advise them too.

And, No more making fun of us out West for panicking over a foot of snow.

Just put your N95 on, tell the newsies to shut the hell up, and deal with it!!!

Big wildfires out east mean, and the best way to deal with them is to use the covid gear you already have and are using all the time because of covid, right? "Oh, no problem, I'll just turn on my air filter and put on my N95 when I go out!" Right??

So what do I hear from New York people I know?
a) "I gotta dig out my mask"
b) "I gotta go find a store with a good mask"

How did these people get into a situation where these things weren't easily at hand??

So I went to King County's Public Health site to check on the state of the measles potential outbreak (the secondary infection window ends tomorrow), and found two things:

1. There's no news on the measles situation.

2. They posted an interview with Dr. Eric Chow, Chief of Communicable Disease Epidemiology for Public Health—Seattle & King County, from this month. Have some quotes:

-"It’s a multilayered approach [to covid]—stay up to date on vaccines, mask up in indoor spaces, particularly when they’re not in well-ventilated or crowded spaces," he said."

-"While there is no official mandate to wear masks anymore, Chow chooses to wear one in order to protect his family and friends, including his eight-month-old and older parents."

Here's the article: https://nwasianweekly.com/2023/06/king-countys-chief-of-communicable-disease-dont-let-your-guard-down-with-covid-19/

If our chief of communicable disease epidemiology is still masking and saying to mask, I'd really like to know why that's not county standard?

Per WHO, every twelve minutes four people die of acute covid. Three of those deaths are in the United States.

Entering April, for every three covid deaths, U.S. saw another excess death not attributed to covid.

The emergency is over. Covid is not done with us.

Chart: U.S. Share of 28-Day Covid Deaths
Data: JHU before 2/28/23; WHO to 5/14/23 (via Our World in Data); NCHS (via CDC) for U.S. thereafter

[ beadsland on Ko-fi ]

Shows covid 28-day mortality as reported for the U.S. as share of G8, G20, and global 28-day mortality. Share of population for each comparison is provided for reference.

7-day avg of U.S. share of G8 covid deaths at 55.4%, on an upward trajectory, well exceeding share of pop. (~38%). This time last year, share of G8 covid deaths was 38.4%, climbing toward winter.

Avg. U.S. share of G20 covid deaths flatter: now 30.0% (vs. ~7% of G20 population). This time last year: 21.1%.

U.S. share of global parallels: now 30.5% (vs. ~4% of pop.). This time last year, U.S. share of global covid deaths was 21.1%.

All three metrics were near or below respective populations roughly May through August of two years ago; thereafter have been profoundly higher than population share ever since.

Caption:

United States represents about a third of G8 population, yet well over half of all recent reported G8 covid deaths.

Likewise, U.S. share of G20 deaths is now near four-and-a-third times its share of population; share of global deaths: over seven times population share.
Chart: Rolling Year Pandemic Mortality: United States
Data: CDC, NCHS

[ beadsland on Ko-fi ]

Captions:

Rolling Year shows deaths reported latest 365 days.

As of May 11, CDC ended reporting of PHE aggregate covid deaths. CDC now provides provisional covid death counts from NCHS NVSS. This chart uses aggregate data through May 6, provisional data thereafter.

---

As of April 1, over one in four excess deaths in the U.S. were “not covid”. Incomplete preliminary data has this ratio approaching three in ten entering May.

That includes: covid deaths not reported as such or for which no covid test was administered; deaths from post-acute sequelae of prior covid infection (whether consequences of symptomatic Long Covid or otherwise asymptomatic, heightened risk for sudden adverse health outcomes); and deaths from causes that would otherwise had not been fatal but for deferred medical care, continued strain on understaffed hospitals, and shortages of vital medical supplies.

On the whole, the #COVID19 situation in #Ireland is better in 2023 than in past pandemic years--but better doesn't mean safe.

Number of COVID patients hospitalized on June 2nd each year:

2020: 194
2021: 93
2022: 197
THIS YEAR: 207

In past years, early summer was a trough between surges. I don't expect a major surge to develop soon, but I also am worried we'll have the risk of another significant fall/winter surge ahead. Time will tell if those concerns are founded. #WearAMask

For pride and all the events coming up, I need to ask you all to please mask up, ideally with N95s or better. Because right now you’re putting yourself at risk each time you go out unmasked.

If you’re thinking “it’s not that bad,” here’s the US wastewater data: https://covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tracker/#wastewater-surveillance If you change the map’s metric to ‘Percent of wastewater samples with detectable virus,’ most are at 80-100% of samples containing covid particulates.

And here's Canada: https://health-infobase.canada.ca/covid-19/wastewater/

You mask inside but not in restaurants? Restaurants were one of the biggest early high risk spaces and stay risky: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7323555/

The CDC said it was safe? The CDC quietly updated their own guidelines:
-https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/communication/people-with-idd/help-child-stay-healthy-at-school.html

And it's not only a covid risk right now:
-https://kingcounty.gov/depts/health/news/2023/May/20-measles.aspx

This burden shouldn't be only on us, this is a public health issue. For now though we need to mask up, and push back.

Let this sink in—N95/FFP2-wearing cyclist @rogla just won elite @giroditalia 🚴‍♂️ race! This man even won a strenuous mountain ⛰️ time trial while wearing a mask. Several top contenders got knocked out with #COVID. No more “can’t breathe in a mask” excuses. 🚵‍♀️

I had to give up on watching Summer Games Done Quick already due to the lack of masking from a good number of the speedrunners/commentators and the poor mask wearing overall. And you just know that hotel ventilation is going to be atrocious.

While I'm glad it's streamed so most people are remote, it's frustrating to watch folks demonstrate really risky behaviors, especially while supporting a medical charity.

It's absolutely fucking sickening how the CDC is pushing this bullshit "you-do-you" individualism approach and THEN TAKES AWAY ALL THE TOOLS TO ALLOW US TO MAKE SUCH DECISIONS.

There's now almost no data reporting on Covid. We get variant data bi-weekly and it's hella flawed due to very little testing done since tests are now ridiculously expensive.

The only metric we got left is wastewater data, which is highly dependent on the region and what towns/counties participate.

So fuck you to the CDC and WHO for deciding that it's okay that 3 people die per hour world-wide of Covid (might be more due to shitty tracking) and thousands die weekly in the US.

What's even the point of them if they REFUSE to do public health?

But the rich gotta have their profits, right?

So angry over this.

Please wear a damn mask. I don't fucking care if you're tired of masks.

You think I'm not tired of being fucking trapped in my goddamn house ILL by LongCovid thanks to shitty-ass people Not Wearing Masks?

So Do Your Fucking Part If You Care At All About People And Wear The Damn Mask. Demand Others Wear It Too.

Fight with us against this fucking Death Cult and purposeful gaslighting attempt to make us all 'forget' a pandemic is STILL happening.

And if you aren't fighting with us? Then hello, eugenics lover. Because this ABANDONMENT of Public Health is fucking EUGENICS.

Thanks for reading my rant.

Healthcare workers in hospitals should #WearAMask. I don't understand why this is even up for debate!

New study comparing hospital acquired #COVID19 (nosocomial, NC) versus community-acquired, CAC). “NC was associated with a higher case fatality rate (39.1% vs. 19.2%) in all age groups. 30-day in-hospital mortality was significantly higher among NC patients (2.07x higher).” Also, 40% higher rate of acute heart failure, 73% higher sepsis and 35% higher readmission.

Commented on a news article that wearing a mask is a good idea on FB, and hoo boy did that prompt a backlash. Lotta people get so mad when you so much as suggest that caution is warranted.

I have a #Mask recommendation!

My kid hated vogmasks, but wore them anyway b/c they're a sensible teenager. So we had them try on a 3M 6000 and a 3M 6500 respirator, and they really liked both of them! In fact the 6500 one they just left on for like a half hour for no reason (we're in our home atm)

They're cheap too. They do have an exhalation valve but that could be a selling point for ya. Makes ya sound like a robot too

The number of hospitalized people with #COVID19 in Ireland on May 26:

2023: 243
2022: 185
2021: 99
2020: 287

We've traded brief, sharp spikes and deep, low troughs for a constant moderate level of infections and disease. All of which would be fine if COVID was, in fact, mild “like the flu,” only hundreds of studies tell us COVID can damage brains, hearts, and immune systems, leading to disabilities and diminished quality of life. #WearAMask when you can in crowds.

More people should listen to Death Panel podcast and get others to listen to it. It explores the gaslighting and manufacturing of consent to forgo all safety, declaring an arbitrary end of the pandemic 'for the economy'.
This episode is a few months old now, but it's really great.

People say flying is safe while #COVID19 spreads. It isn't. In general, planes are safer in the air, but on the ground (boarding, taxiing, deplaning), air is worse, nor is there a guarantee filters are working well in flight. I'm collecting the CO2 readings people share on Twitter while traveling. Here are two. Under 800 is considered safer.

What I don't get is why people don't fly masked. When is it easier to wear a mask than when sitting quietly in a chair for hours?! #WearAMask

Chart of CO3 during flight, staying above 1000 ppm throughout. Peaking at 3042 ppm.
Chart of CO2 during a flight. In the air, CO2 levels were in a safer zone (near 800 ppm) but during boarding and deplaning, it exceeded 1600 ppm.

I wear a mask in public because Covid is NOT mild, it’s a dangerous level 3 pathogen, & we are still in an active pandemic. I want masking in public spaces, especially in hospitals. If you believe in health justice & protecting our community, & you believe in a better life, you’ll do the same. I wear a mask because it is easy to do & I look totally fabulous in one. If you agree, show me your mask in comments, copy this & let’s see who’s out there.

Against a blue sky and backlit with sunshine illuminating her stray strands of hair, a woman stands in a large brim hat with floral designs under the brim. She is wearing a dark blue puffer coat and a white flo-mask. The view is looking up at her from below and the strap of her hat looks a little tight under her chin. She has dark brown hair and dark eyebrows and a fair complexion. She is alert and probably smiling under her mask.

White people and Republicans are significantly less concerned they may spread #COVID19 to others. They are also significantly less worried they'll get COVID and require hospitalization. But perhaps the most interesting data here is that poor people are much more concerned about COVID than the wealthy. It's a sign of privilege to not #WearAMask.

A ridiculous mask study has been retracted: It found “Masks interfered with O2-uptake and CO2-release and compromised respiratory compensation” and concluded “mask wearing should not be mandated let alone enforced by law.” Objections were raised, and the journal investigated, concluding “the complaints were valid and that the article does not meet the standards of editorial and scientific soundness.”

Masks work. #WearAMask #COVID19
