Underrated aspect of responsive web apps: It’s easy to scale their user interfaces.

Common scales are:
* Phone
* Tablet
* Desktop
* TV (roughly: phone UI on a large screen, with a remote control as an input device)

My use case: Watching videos via the YouTube web app on my 27" Mac screen like on a TV. I can still reach my keyboard but sit farther away than usual and zoom into the app.

Using #Calckey as a Chromuim shortcut on my phone really made me reconsider my stance on #webApps for phones.

It's surprisingly good, someone else takes care of updating it for me, and I have not been missing a native app, where I really expected this to be a dealbreaker.

I wish Firefox hadn't abandoned web-apps.

Still prefer native apps for more everyday tasks that I rely on, but if I have no network, I can't use this one anyway ​:blobcat_shrugsmirk:​

Setup is relatively simple: scrape a Weibo endpoint for trending, pipe that to DeepL for translation, with a caching layer in the middle.

Experimenting with doing this as a batch job X times daily and serving a static page, as 1) Weibo trending content doesn't change much intra-day (astro-turfing and censorship) and 2) Redis is expensive for having a smooth experience.

So much business #software involves performing similar-but-different edits on a list of items. So it's not batch, but you want to be able to do it quickly and efficiently. All of our patterns for doing this in #webapps suck.

Modals without permanent URIs. Endless back-and-forth clicking with load times of greater than 500ms. Waiting for an edit to complete on item 1 before letting me move on to item 2.

Why now, I'm not submitting new #OKRs this week, why do you ask?

@KweVictoria added to that: React isn't even "native" in the sense of a "native app" or "native #API" on #Linux or other #Unix-alike OSes.

"Native" in that context would mean it seamlessly integrates into the UI and UX and provides a seamless experience, like gnome-settings or deja-dup on gnome.

So even if we're not outraged about the abuse of #native in said context, it would be technically wrong as well, since #WebApps like #React ain't native at all!

We’re shipping the very latest @gnome Web 43 which includes support for creating #WebApps which show in the applications menu. They can have their own settings including privacy controls and can even run in the background

Three things I currently love the most in @elk:

1. The replies show the original post/thread
2. Clear indicators of posts, boosts and replies (on the official PWA they are visually too similar)
3. Formatting!

At work we have some simple #webapps I'm charged with maintaining. BUT, they were programmed in #LightSwitch 😱 . I've never used LS and it's just gross.

I'll make new ones - I'm a wiz at C#, right? Well... my web experience is TINY. I can read #Blazor code FINE and I THINK I can do it, but then I get stuck trying to wrap my head around authenticating users auto-grabbing their windows login & AD security groups and I get nervous. Note: I'm the ONLY #data guy with #dotNet xp so I'm alone.

@matrix @blender yeah, but I think making your tech more appealing and approachable to "#TechIlliterates" and "#Normies" should have a higher priority than following a trend and fad [aka. #VR]...

Regardless of that I do think that #JS and #Tracking / #Cookies are bad #ghettohacks of a technology and lazy #WebApps should've never seen mass adoption, but there's far worse staff like #MicrosoftOffice and espechally #Windows.

I just can't stand the latter...

I noticed today that the apps on my #Windows PC are now a weird mixture of #WebApps, #Android apps, and native Windows apps. I guess I should be happy I have options.

If you ask a 100 people department to create a new web app it will create a web app that will provide enough work for 100 people.

The performance inequality gap is growing. While #Apple dominates the top end with ridiculously fast processors. #Qualcomm is just there, seemingly doing nothing to improve the low-to-mid end.

I don’t think there will be any major improvements on the non-Apple side anytime soon. So it’s on us developers to build performant #websites and #webapps.
