👁️ accessible-notifications explainer

"For people who are blind or low vision, identifying dynamic changes (non-user-initiated) in the content of a web app is very challenging. ARIA live regions are the only mechanism available today that communicate content changes down to the accessibility layer..."

Many web developers today do not know what is was like before Firebug. All we could do is tweak and reload over and over. It really changed everything. Joe Hewitt did amazing work. Now all browsers have a developer console.

One of the many advantages of https://enhance.dev over NextJS, Svelte, and even Astro is beautiful, semantic, readable, accessible and clear source.

Even after you've deployed your code.

The code you wrote is the code that runs. Try view source on the showcase apps

I’ve seen Molly speak several times, but one of the things that amused me was her documenting Eric Meyer accidentally saying “elephant” instead of “element.” @unixmercenary archived the post.

RIP, Molly. Aplastic anemia truly sucks.

RIP Molly... I didn't really know you, but will miss your presence all the same #WebStandards

Remembering Molly Holzschlag. She's the force behind what many of us take for granted on the web.

Her books influenced me and inspired me to start my freelance web design business.

I was lucky to meet her in person, when she accepted my invitation to come to and speak in Detroit.

We stayed in touch online over the years.

Miss you, Mols.

“It really is a reflection of what we are as individuals and I’ve always seen the web that way, that the web is the macrocosm to our microcosm. It’s the reflection at the larger macro level of what we ourselves are as an embodiment of our humanity. There is bad and there’s a good and everything in between.”

The coolest thing about web technology is how even though browsers upgrade often and automatically our code in HTML, CSS and JavaScript does not break. 💔 Even websites from 20+ years ago still work today.

Very few modern JS dependencies take advantage of that compounding value. Instead userland is in a neverending manual upgrade cycle. Worse, it's usually for aesthetic reasons.

This is so unacceptable in 2023. (Or any date after the early naughties)

We need a #standards based, #accessible web that can be accessed by standards compliant browsers of all types. We're sliding back into monopolies controlled by #google and #apple who are untrustworthy shepherds of an open web.
