Some people here need to understand that racism is primarily systemic. While there are individual aspects to it (yes, what your uncle said IS racist), that just not using slurs or being a "good person" doesn't mean you're not actively complicit in racism by reifying racist tropes that these systems rely on to keep functioning.
Everything exists within a context, and nothing happens in a vacuum.
Even if you "didn't mean it like that", it's still perceived that way and still lends power to systemic racism.
Yeah, it's tiring to constantly be aware of the impact your words have. Suck it up, sunshine.
This is what we mean by "doing the work". But no matter how tired you are, I guarantee it's literally nothing compared to the tiredness felt by those people who exist under that racist system.
It never ends. It needs to be done. Stop complaining and just get on with it and stop crying about it.

See, what I find so absurd about the winger argument that stochastic terrorism "isn't real" and amounts of a political smear job, is the fact that on a semi regular basis these violent nazis just straight up admit that they're doing a race war/stochastic murder spree and yet this has absolutely no impact on whether or not mainstream discourse, particularly in the Anglosphere, is willing to hear out reactionary apologists for this violence; folks who are themselves, more often than not, simply crypto-fascists. Take for example the nazi that murdered a whole family, in Canada with his car, just you know, for being brown and Muslim.
And to be clear, the story here is not "the fascists propagandists, media minions, and pols are all lying" because we fucking knew that, they're fascists. The issue here is that mainstream for profit media, is still having these people on, and letting these people publish, counter arguments and apologia for stochastic fascist violence, even though the damn nazis doing the murders, are straight up admitting that's what this is. Often. Regularly. They INSPIRE each other.
White supremacists (aka conservatives, MAGA, or GOP) are driven by the fear that someone who does not look like them might have the same rights as them.

A lot of you have been going hard at rage.love recently (as well as other instances involved in the oliphant.social situation) and I think we need to be reminded of certain core principles of solidarity with marginalized groups because some of you are seriously missing the point.
I had wanted to stay out of the whole debacle because my server is still very new and very small, and therefore easily swept up in drama between much larger instances. I did not want statements I made to hurt my users or the community on my server by drawing harassment or driving away folks who might otherwise have joined. However, at this point I can't justify staying quiet bc I think we server admins have a responsibility not just to ourselves but the Fediverse community to take a stand for marginalized groups.
I've been seeing a lot of posts saying that rage.love has been demonizing a former user of oliphant, making things up about the user, and basically participating in a smear campaign against them. Recently rage.love (as well as .art) posted and then retracted a statement about that user perpetrating ongoing anti-indigenous abuse after it turned out to be a case of mistaken identity. I know a lot of you are not going to want to hear this, but I don't care. L.J. is correct here. She does a fantastic job of outlining the reasoning behind her values generally and it applies to her actions in the example above specifically.
I think some of you are getting caught up in the fedi drama of taking sides and are forgetting the fundamentals. So I'm going to ask you a question about general principles, and I'm going to ask you to consider the question outside of the recent conflict: do you stand with Black and indigenous fedi users, or do you stand with whiteness?
Because if you really, truly, and unreservedly stand with us, you need to ask yourselves what risks you are comfortable taking to work against white supremacy. You simply cannot work against the status quo without taking risks, that's the whole point.
White supremacy means that more often than not, people who experience racist abuse are not believed. Or, even if they are believed, no action is taken to defend them. Whiteness confers a presumption of innocence automatically. That's just how power works.
Do you agree with that? No? Then what are you going to do about it? As L.J. points out, you can never be 100% sure about the facts of a situation you weren't party to. So when, to use this situation as an example, an indigenous person comes to you privately saying that they've been experiencing racist abuse from a white person and asking you to speak out about it. What do you do?
On the one hand, you could tell them to provide receipts or you won't do anything. After all, you don't want to risk falsely accusing someone. On the other, you could go ahead and speak out, just taking them at their word.
Tell me this. All other factors aside, which one of these approaches centers the person marginalized by race and which one centers the white person being accused? As someone who claims solidarity with Black and indigenous folks, which option do you think centers their struggles against white supremacy?
Can you see why rage.love and .art may have had cause to make the decisions they made in this situation, even if you disagree? Their actions are consistent with their stated principles. They received information and made a decision to act on said information according to their values and best judgment. Then, when it was revealed that the info was incorrect, they issued a retraction.
Can someone explain to me how that is an effective smear campaign? Why they would put out a statement and then retract it so soon after? That doesn't make any sense at all if they're truly trying to just make someone look bad. I guess I'm just not understanding the supposed master plan here.
To close, I am going to need y'all to remind yourselves about promises you've made about how much more racially inclusive you want fedi to be. You said you wanted us here; are you willing to center us or not? Are you willing to believe us or not? Are you willing to risk a false accusation or would you rather risk us not coming to you with our struggles? Because make no mistake, as things stand now, that’s a choice you may need to make from time to time. It may get messy and it may get complicated, and you will probably lose friends over it. And if you ain’t about that life, please just let us know now rather than string us along because we don't get the luxury of having that choice. Thanks.

It is crazy to me how predictable and how patterned this all is. It's really a re-imagining of Redemption, down to the presence of a major political party (Republicans now, Democrats in the late 19th-early 20th) giving a wink and nod, if not outright encouragement, to white paramilitary actors.

I suppose this is one for the "they walk among us" fash-watch files, but it also serves to demonstrate the existence of openly fascist elements in our security and military forces, and how capitalist structures are quite fine with platforming fascist ideology, for a profit:

If you know anything about reactionary capitalist hellworld, you won't be surprised to learn that Ross sells his (explicitly fascist) books using Shopify as a payment processor, and hell yes Amazon is involved:
"Agartha sells from its own website using Shopify as a payment processor, but also sells books on Amazon outside the US. Its titles were available on country-specific Amazon platforms serving other including Australia and the UK, with orders fulfilled using Amazon’s own print-on-demand service."
Obviously you can read the rest of the article for more details about the kind of nazi trashfire propaganda this muppet is selling, more or less in the open, but the key point here is that when people talk about fascists being normalized to the point of banality in larger American society, it's examples like this that they're referring to. This guy was in Identity Evropa while enlisted in the United States Coast Guard, and he's selling white nationalist books on mainstream online platforms, while apparently still serving as a reservist. These are not fringe people in our society, and it's not an accident that all these fascists gravitate to careers and organizations where we encourage normalized fascism, more or less openly; policing and the military, being just two obvious examples.
