Skimmed the "cabbage rolls" #Wikipedia article upon seeing the recent @jeffreyw's toot on those, and it mentioned "Golubtsy (little pigeons)" as the #Russian variation. Yet the Wiktionary entry for "голубец" does not contain #etymology for that meaning. If it actually comes from another common and similar word, I would guess it is rather from the word for light blue color ("голубой"), with which "голубь" (pigeon) shares a common ancestor word (Proto-Slavik "*golǫbь", according to their Wiktionary entries). Even though they are not that blue, but they do not look like pigeons to me, either.

The article also mentioned "Balandėliai (little pigeons)" for #Lithuanian, and apparently "balandis" indeed stands for a pigeon (or dove, or April) in Lithuanian. But then the article on its #Polish variation, "Gołąbki", has a section on etymology, which includes both that version and that it may be folk etymology, while the word is originally borrowed. One may call that article a little more polished, or come up with a better pun.

I removed those "(little pigeons)" mentions, since they do not add much, but are dubious. Now I am curious what the actual etymology is, but since linguists and etymologists looked into it and did not reach a consensus, probably it will remain a mystery. A good thing about etymology is that it rarely matters.

Zmaj was built in Germany as a seaplane tender for the Royal Yugoslav Navy between 1928 and 1930. She does not appear to have been much used in that role and was converted to a minelayer in 1937. Shortly before the Axis invasion of Yugoslavia in April 1941, she laid minefields along the Dalmatian coast, perhaps inadvertently leading to the sinking of two Yugoslav passenger ships. @WahbAllat I love to compare the Zionist Wikipedia (under control of right wing activists in the last 10 years or so) entries in Hebrew, with various other languages. The #Hebrew #Wikipedia states the “reason for depopulation” of most Palestinian villages as “abandonment”, never military assault, or massacre, which were commonly performed by militia forces. They actually have custom metadata fields ready for “reason” and “date” of “abandonment” of any #Palestinian village. Epistemic violence on the Wikipedia is almost a standard these days.

today’s #Wikipedia feature article is the Battle Of Poitiers.

if you were a history major and +50 like me, “Battle Of Poitiers” may mean 4 different things.

one major effect Wikipedia has had with European history, is that it has cleaned up English names for continental events. so instead of 4 battles of Poitiers, there’s now one.

am obsessed with the 732 battle, now of Tours.
the chronicles have the first known use of the word EUROPEAN.

Anyone also seeing the flag on many #wikipedia pages, instead of the article?

I don't see any mention of that, and it's happening on many different pages of different topics.

Screenshit of a wikipedia article hijacked

Had a good meeting with the @wmlgbt user group today. I talked about some of the photos I've contributed to @wikipedia and #Wikimedia Commons over the past 10 years, most of which focus on #LGBTQ and #SocialJustice issues.

@jernej__s @danluu hey, I can provide some context for that. In 2014 or 2015 maybe, we wrote an article for #NodeBB on #Wikipedia, and it got AfD'd for being non-notable. Subsequent attempts to reintroduce the article were immediately deleted, and doing it the "right way" (aka, submitting a draft for review) went unanswered.

Overzealous editors have their fiefdoms and the "list of forum software" is one. No article = no entry, and when we make one we get shut down.

So we just gave up 👍

Interesting feature: the #Cosmonaut polynya remains active and persistent.

I just learned from #Wikipedia that the name #Cosmonauts Sea (30° – 50°E) was just a proposed sea name and is not accepted by the International Hydrographic Organization or any other organization.

The "inline toggle" for #MediaWiki diff viewing (a part of my team's 'Better diff handling of paragraph splits' project) has recently been deployed on #Wikipedia!

A screenshot of the top right of the MediaWiki diff view. There are two buttons ("Visual" and "Wikitext", of which "Wikitext" is selected) and a toggle switch (labelled "Inline", which is currently turned off)

"To put it in rough terms: About a third to a half of the fibs were removed or flagged within a 48-hour window.

When I discussed the result, many people found that rate surprisingly high. Although they might have been extrapolating (wrongly) that every 48-hour period would have that kind of correction rate, some just found it to be better than they would have expected."

i appreciate that wikipedia identifies pele's divine parents, divine siblings, and crater home. 😍

the last time i went up to volcanoes national park, i was looking at the "plugged" halema'uma'u crater & thought "it really is like she put a lid on her bubbling brew and went away on a trip." so i guess she's returned from her trip (to iceland or some other place with active eruptions) & has put the lava back on boil 🌋 🔥

This is a photo of a happy, fulfilled scientist, who has some colossal achievements to her credit.

Meet Nathalie Josso (1934-2022), the French pediatric endocrinologist who isolated & named the anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) that differentiates sex in the fetus, studied intersex, & much more besides.

Question for Wikipedia editors / Wikipedians - does anyone have a link to a set of slides that can be used to give a presentation about the basics of #Wikipedia ? I want to give a presentation locally (about 45 mins) about the Wikipedia five pillars, basics of editing, how to get started, etc.

I feel like I saw a reference to some presentations that could be used in training / education about Wikipedia … but my search foo is not working this morning and I can’t find any.

Project #cybersyn on #wikipedia has an image from the original operation room from the 70ies. The prompts in the background are quite interesting:

🧶 En me documentant pour #Wikipédia, j'ai lu un exposé que Charles Keeling, océanographe, a donné en avril 1969 — il y a 54 ans.

Il y aborde la possibilité que les émissions de CO2 dues à l'usage croissant des combustibles fossiles changent le #climat et l'environnement.
