Of 1080 and weedkillers
Since settlers introduced a host of pest species to Australia, the fight against the invasive animals and plants has been ongoing. Toxins or fossil fuel machinery are the main tools employed to eradicate the harmful non-native species.
Weedkillers with glyphosate are ubiquitous in the war on out of control weeds. For animal pest species sodium fluoroacetate (1080) bait is dropped from the sky or distributed on the ground.

"Since the 1950s, Australian governments, private contractors and property owners have used 1080 poison baits to kill “pest” animals such as foxes, rabbits, cats, pigs and wild dogs, including dingoes... Australia is only one of a handful of countries that allow the use of 1080 baits..."

The externalities of this cost effective method results in the killing of non-target species. Pet owners who bear witness to their pet dog's extended suffering from poisoning become traumatised. 'Out there' in the bush many Australian animals experience also such a cruel death that goes unseen.

This is a neighbourhood cat we've affectionately named Fred, as we don't know his real name yet.

Fred is very sweet to humans, but Fred has a serious issue with birds and other small critters.

Fred routinely goes after the crows. He wants to catch them in his murder mittens.

I am surprised Fred being such a jerk hasn't put the crows off of visiting me.

Apparently, woodpeckers don’t like it when squirrels eat their suet. This little redhead was complaining a lot before he swooped to attack. I can say, he gave fair warning, but the bushy tail was too busy munching to pay much attention. #wildlife #nature

Was looking at the local swans and their cygnets when I noticed, out of the corner of my eye, something moving fairly close to me – a young blackbird, not yet as wary as an adult.

(I think those things around its eye might be ticks? Hope they're not carrying any diseases.)

Birds have been scarce around here as of late, maybe because of the good weather and the rather large amount of people that are out and about.

This gorgeous Red Tailed Hawk posed beautifully for the camera in Guelph Ontario Canada and the colorful fall foliage was the perfect background. The Red Tails are very large raptors and usually sit near fields with their eyes focused on the ground looking for moles and more.

It is so wonderful to see the Monarch butterflies as they are now endangered. This beauty was sipping nectar from the pink Buddleia in the summer garden and the morning light cast a lovely soft glow on the butterfly and bloom.

I'm sharing this photo I took of two black bears playing for #SilentSunday because that's what I was when I came across them while hiking...I kept perfectly silent and still as they wrestled like I wasn't even there. I'm still not sure if they even saw me. Eventually they curled up for a nap behind a bush.
