Concrete posts and lower halfs that make up a wall around the front of an apartment building, with slats of iron fence pulled up to different heights usually uneven.
Fence slats as described in the first photo, taken from another angle with one bar bent.

The City of Winnipeg is working very hard to hide the truth about the claimed benefits of the proposed widening of Route 90.

Many of the claims run counter to general modern road design concepts, but even the city's own data contradicts the claims.

This post does a great job breaking the mythical claims down

Today in Labor History May 15, 1919: Workers in Winnipeg, Canada, initiated a huge general strike involving 30,000 workers. The strike lasted until June 26th, when the Winnipeg Labor Council declared the strike over. During the strike, the Mounted Police tried repeatedly to violently suppress the workers. The workers called for a six-hour workday and a five-day work week. During the strike, virtually the entire workforce halted work. Even the local cops voted for the strike. However, the strike committee asked the cops and utility workers to stay on the job to help keep basic services functioning. They set up a huge public kitchen which served food to hundreds of people each day. The Winnipeg “Free Press” called the strikers bohunks, aliens and anarchists. The called in the Royal Mounted Police and arrested dozens of people, charging some with seditious conspiracy. On Bloody Saturday, June 21, the Mounties fired into the crowd, killing one and wounding thirty others. In May and June, General Strikes broke out in 30 other Canadian cities.

Winnipeggers (yes, that's what we call ourselves), please take the time to fill out the City's survey on the future of Portage and Main. Letting human beings cross the streets is still a no-go (because of course) but there are other ways to improve it. I filled it out with some restrained colour commentary on why designs should make pedestrians more visible and engaged with the corner so that drivers know we're there and that it's equally ours. #Winnipeg #urbanism https://engage.winnipeg.ca/portageandmain

How to say Winnipeg's new street names. Try them. Repeat them. Learn them. Use them.

Bishop Grandin Boulevard to Abinojii Mikanah (A-bin-oh-gee Mee-kin-ah)

Bishop Grandin Trail to Awasisak Méskanow (Aa-wa-sis-uk Me-ska-noh)

Grandin Street to Taapweewin Way (Tap-way- win)

A quest for knowledge is an important factor in staying young when you're retired so I was excited to discover that Winnipeg is famous for the Fat Boy Burger. Not sure how this important fact didn't come to my attention earlier during business trips to the Peg. Obviously I was not exposed to the city's full spectrum of culture. I wonder if there is a faithful version local to me here in Caledon Ontario?

In stories about #Ottawa's canal, the 'longest skating rink in the world' and I think about what a jerk move it was for #Winnipeg to go plow a strip of their river, longer than ours just to steal the title.

I mean really – let us have that.

So now we carefully say "largest" instead, since ours isn't truck-wide strip up the middle of a river but rather a wide surface between stone walls.

I lived in Winnipeg, have family there, and like it, but it just seems like a bit of an a*hole move.

Ice sculptures at Upper Fort Garry (with jig music playing) in #Winnipeg. The posts and signs are in ice as well, but it looks like yesterday's mild weather may have melted them a bit. There are snow sculptures around downtown too, and likely some in St. Boniface as well. I hope to take a walk in the neighbourhood when #FestivalDuVoyageur is on, though I might not have the time to visit it myself.

Ice sculptures in a park that have slightly melted and frosted. One looks like some kind of falcon and serpent fighting. The other in the distance looks like an archer.
Ice sculptures in a park that are slightly frosted over. One looks like a swan and another looks like a scorpion with a human head. In the distance there are human-like sculptures.

i've waffled about what to say by way of and #introduction for ... well for as long as i've been here.

i'm melanie, and i'm a #poet and a former academic.

i'm working on two book-length #poetry manuscripts: one considers mental illness and the call to survive as well as the cost of survival; the other is somewhat more sprawling and is about the estrangement of two sisters, leaving the place you grow up (and staying there), family trauma and the way private traumas ripple out beyond their original confines.

otherwise, i'm always noodling around with #essays and #fiction and unattached #poems.

i write a monthly #poetry column for the Winnipeg Free Press and try to keep on top what's being published in #Canada. sometimes i interview writers about their books for Prairie Books Now.

when i post, i'm mostly talking about #writing, #poems, #trauma, #MentalIllness, #reading, my #cat, and #Winnipeg.

#Introduction

I’m not great at introductions or distillations of self, but I’m grateful to be here and feel weirdly relieved to be on a platform that resists virality and personal branding.

Winnipeg is home.

I’m interested in theories and ideas, music and sounds. I’m mostly compelled by things I didn’t know could be things.

I love words, sentences, and paragraphs, but I’m intensely ambivalent about the struggle of reading and writing.

I’m a UX designer at a university and a former editor/bike mechanic.

I run.
