Shout-out to @kristinHenry for boosting #WomenWhoCode this week -- here's a gif from a project of mine.. I've been working on creating a visualization technique for planar graph embedding of segmented cerebrovascular morphology (finding all the arteries / veins in a brain scan and disentangling them to lie flat). The long term goal is to get this to a place where you could hover over the "subway map" of the brain, and have it control a "Magic Schoolbus"-style viewfinder traversing the 3D scan 🤓

Animation from a 3d point cloud of points along the cerebrovasculature into a circular tree network shape in 2D. Points colored by brain region.

When experimenting with adding the hashtag #WomenWhoCode to a post, the little count pop-up indicated that it's been used zero times this week...I'm guessing that's just on my instance...but that's just not right.

Can we perhaps get that higher? Women who code should not be invisible.

Editing to add: If you're wanting to participate, please only use the tag to self-identify. There are lots of reasons women might not want to bring attention to themselves.

Wow! I really need to update this list of Generative Artists who are also Women or Nonbinary.

Suggestions for who to add, or update, are appreciated. Especially help finding folks who have moved to Mastodon.

Sometimes, I'm feeling more sassy than usual. So I made this silly "Sassy Watermark Maker".

With it, you can add one of my sassy phrases to your image. Or add your own sassy phrase!

I get so much enjoyment from building little toys like this.

It's free to play with on itch.io, but you can also chip in if you'd like to support me making more fun toys.

A lot of my art, in various media, involves abstract floral patterns. Sometime I'm drawing with a glass dipping pen. Sometimes I'm writing code to create little 'games' for making flower images.

Here's my Flower Maker, built with CSS-Doodle and some javascript. It lets you generate abstract flowers and download the images.

A big part of finding my voice as an artist started with developing Chemistry simulations.

I was debugging my code for collision tracking and was changing the shape and colors of particles when they bumped into each other.

I thought it looked cool, so I started playing with it artistically.

Here's an instant downloadable version of one of my coloring pages.

The practice of pair programming has been around since the early days of coding. The ENIAC women, who are considered to be the very first programmers, used to work in pairs. This article explains styles, benefits, challenges and power dynamics at play in pair programming, and how it can be a useful onboarding tool.

Prompt for Day 29: "Maximalism"

I looked up what "Maximalism" is, and my first take is that it looks like lots of bold colors and patterns, all together. Kinda like hippie style, but not quite. But also, I see photos of rooms with bold colored walls, and clusters of art arranged all together on a wall.

I knew I couldn't do justice to the prompt if I tried to go too literal, so I tried to stay within my own style and used dots.

It's been several years since I updated this whimsical data visualization of Randy Rainbow's growth in popularity. But I still enjoy his videos when new ones come out.

My favorite part of the viz is how the words bounce when you mouse over the circles.

Prompt for Day 22: "Shadows"

This prompt inspired me to think about koi fish and the shadows they cast when they are in a shallow pond.

I ended up creating my own koi fish png and drawing it onto canvas. It's simple, but it works.

I've also added a filter to rotate the hue of the fish.

Please help me find these artists on mastodon, and find even more artists to add!

*Editing to add, in case anyone didn't know: Trans Women are Women! So yes, my list includes trans women. If you have a problem with that, you can just go elsewhere.*
