Her work has helped raised awareness of endometriosis, a painful but common disease among women. It occurs in an estimated 2-10% of women, and in 50% of patients treated for infertility.

#OnThisDay, 30 Mar 1982, Bertha Wilson is sworn in to the Canadian Supreme Court. She is first woman appointed to sit on it. When she had started at law school in 1955, she was reportedly advised to 'take up crocheting' instead.

Her 1988 ruling decriminalised abortion in Canada.

#OnThisDay, 26 Mar 1974, Gaura Devi and 27 village women prevent the logging of trees in the village of Reni in the Himalayas. They confront armed men from the lumber company and hug the trees to stop them being felled.

Part of the Chipko movement, which was protesting deforestation, the women’s actions led to a protection order and fed into a wider desire to protect the Himalayan region.

#OnThisDay, 25 Mar 1941, the first Women’s Royal Navy Service women (known as “wrens”) arrive at Bletchley Park.

They operate the Bombe machines developed by Alan Turing and used for decoding German Enigma machine messages.

The Bombes were loud, and had to be precisely coded by the WRNS each time. Additional decoding locations were added, each with a complement of wrens.

Their work helps shorten #WorldWar2.
