Dr. Linda Griffith, Professor of Biological & Mech. Engineering at MIT, also directs the Center for Gynepathology Research there.
Her work has helped raised awareness of endometriosis, a painful but common disease among women. It occurs in an estimated 2-10% of women, and in 50% of patients treated for infertility.
The average delay between onset and diagnosis is about ten years.

Tu Youyou, a Chinese medical researcher, played a vital role in discovering artemisinin, the most powerful antimalarial drug therapy available today.
She found a key hint in a 4th-century BC medical text, which she combined with the insight that conventional techniques for extracting medicine from herbs might destroy the active ingredient.

Margaret Morse Nice pioneered a new branch of science called ethology, which focused on understanding animals by watching what they did and why.
Despite not being allowed to finish her Ph.D. when she got married, and despite a lack of institutional support, Nice excelled in a male-dominated field and produced an impressive body of literature, publishing hundreds of articles and thousands of reviews.

#OnThisDay, 25 Mar 1941, the first Women’s Royal Navy Service women (known as “wrens”) arrive at Bletchley Park.
They operate the Bombe machines developed by Alan Turing and used for decoding German Enigma machine messages.
The Bombes were loud, and had to be precisely coded by the WRNS each time. Additional decoding locations were added, each with a complement of wrens.
Their work helps shorten #WorldWar2.
