It's amazing palaeontologist Mary Anning's birthday today. She was born in 1799 in Dorset and made many important discoveries. Celebrate her! But also refute all the ignorant claims that Anning was the one and only woman of her time interested in palaeontology. She wasn't even the only woman in Lyme Regis collecting fossils! What about Anning's friend Elizabeth Philpot? What about Etheldred Bennett in Wiltshire, the neighbouring county, who was actively engaged in palaeontology from at least 1809? Why is history of science produced by supposedly respectable institutions, who claim they're promoting women in STEM, still disappearing or denigrating women's achievements? Infuriating.

The crew of Artemis II will embark on the first human spaceflight mission to the moon since the Apollo era, more than 50 years ago. Last November, NASA launched the Artemis I mission, a test of the massive Space Launch System rocket and an uncrewed Orion capsule. That set up Artemis II, the first of NASA's new missions to the moon with astronauts aboard. It will not launch until at least November 2024. Riding in an Orion capsule, the astronauts will travel on an elliptical orbit that loops as far out as 1,800 miles above Earth, giving the astronauts time to see how Orion's systems work. It will then travel toward the moon, using its gravity to sling back to Earth for a Pacific Ocean splashdown.

Nasa names first woman and black man on Moon mission.

NASA on Monday announced the crew of Artemis II, four astronauts who will head to the moon within the next two years. The crew will travel around the moon and back on a 10-day mission.

The crew of three Americans and one Canadian will be the first humans to fly toward the moon in more than 50 years. They are: Victor Glover, Christina Koch and Reid Wiseman of NASA, and Jeremy Hansen of the Canadian Space Agency. Glover, the first Black man assigned as a crew member on the International Space Station, will serve as the mission's pilot. Koch, who holds the record for the longest single spaceflight by a woman, will serve as a mission specialist. Wiseman, who served as NASA's chief astronaut, will be the commander. Hansen, one of four active Canadian astronauts, will also serve as a mission specialist

Reid Wiseman (47): A US Navy pilot who served for a time as the head of Nasa's astronaut office. He's flown one previous space mission, to the International Space station in 2015.

Victor Glover (46): A US Navy test pilot. He joined Nasa in 2013 and made his first spaceflight in 2020. He was the first African American to stay on the space station for an extended period of six months.

Christina Koch (44): An electrical engineer. She holds the record for longest continuous time in space by a woman, of 328 days. With Nasa astronaut Jessica Meir she participated in the first all-female spacewalk in October 2019.

Jeremy Hansen (47): Before joining the Canadian Space Agency, he was a fighter pilot with the Royal Canadian Air Force. He has yet to fly in space.

@FaithfullJohn For anyone wondering, btw, it's this Emily Aston (article needs editing to reconcile conflicting older sources with evidence from newer publications):

"Emily Alicia Aston (4 January 1866 - 18 March 1948) was born in Paddington to Joseph Keech Aston and Sarah Eccles. She was a British chemist primarily known for her high publication output during the late 1800s. Aston earned bachelor's degrees in both chemistry and geology from University College London before beginning her research career. She studied a broad range of topics, including mineral analysis, atomic weight determination, and organic structure studies, and was most famous for her work on molecular surface energies with Sir William Ramsay between 1893 and 1902."

"Emily Aston is known for her high publication output during the 16 year time period between 1886 and 1902. During this time, she co-authored 18 publications over a broad range of topics including mineralogy, organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry and physical chemistry.[2]"

I wonder if I could ask #womenshistory #needlework #embroidery enthusiasts #makers and #regency fans if they could check out my website Patterns or Perfection, which is a searchable database of nearly 200 rare needlework patterns from the Lady’s Magazine between 1770 and 1819. We are moving the site to my University’s server from its current home so it links to my other research pages/resources on the magazine and I would love feedback/suggestions: https://research.kent.ac.uk/patterns-of-perfection/ @fiberarts

March is Women's History Month. You likely never heard of Maria Sibylla Merian (2 April 1647 – 13 January 1717), but she made groundbreaking contributions to the science of entomology & botany. Her botanical art is spectacular! The art style in the four minute animated video below is representative of Merian's style, but you should look her up online to see images of her original work. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5PyrJUmKXM

These norm-defying suffragists continued to push for a broader vision of women’s rights beyond just the vote. They understood that the real fear of critics was that they just might win their fight for equality. They intended to do just that.

Bondfield entered parliament following leadership roles in various Trade Union organisations. However the role of Minister for Labour was doomed to fail, particularly when the Wall Street Crash caused unemployment to boom.

Good morning! Today is the 68th anniversary of Claudette Colvin's refusal to give up her bus seat to a white person in Montgomery, Alabama. Only 15 years old at the time, she was then arrested and ultimately convicted of disturbing the peace, violating segregation laws, and assaulting police, and was made a ward of the state. This spurred the Women's Political Council, a local Black women's leadership organization, to gather other women who'd been treated similarly together to organize a boycott and court challenge. It's widely believed that Miss Colvin's youth, dark skin, and pregnancy by a married man made them look to Rosa Parks instead as a test case for the boycott. Miss Colvin served as a witness in the lawsuit though, and went to the Supreme Court. Browder v. Gayle was a thorough rejection of Plessy v. Ferguson, especially given that both cases involved transportation.

We celebrate #PresidentsDay today because it is close to George Washington’s birthday.

While he is celebrated, his mother, Mary, who was a brave, enduring and self-denying woman, has generally been trashed by (male) historians

Abigail Adams, the intelligent and caring wife of President John Adams, famously wrote to him urging him to “remember the ladies.” But all too often in presidential history, the way first ladies have been remembered only for their fashion choices.

Mary Edwards Walker worked as a surgeon for the Union Army during the Civil War. She was captured by Confederates after crossing enemy lines to treat wounded civilians & arrested as a spy. She's the only woman to ever receive the Medal of Honor - pictured here, wearing it.

I don't think I'll ever get tired of talking about suffragette self-defense (even to those who didn't ask).

Happy Birthday to Maria Tallchief, born in Fairfax, Oklahoma, a small town on the Osage reservation, #OnThisDay in 1925.

Tallchief was one of the greatest dancers of all time and the first American dancer to achieve the title of prima ballerina. After her retirement, she founded the Chicago City Ballet in 1980.

Does anyone happen to be aware of any recent "state of the field" or historiographical essays on U.S. women's history? Putting together an early syllabus for a COLL petition and I really want to ground our first day in class in a broad "what's all this about?" discussion. I'm most grateful for any recommendations you may have! 🙂 #VastEarlyAmerica #WomensHistory #Historiography

This is how British readers (or at least many of them: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Graphic) learned about the world situation as 1917 drew to a close

The Graphic, 22 December 1917, reports on events in the British Empire:

"India's Memorable Flag-Day"

#WWI #India #imperialism #WomensHistory

The Graphic, 22 December 1917:

Header photo from a full-page story

Title:
India's Memorable Flag-Day

Subtitle:
The Indian women on their flag-day last week settled the thorny question of a national flag for India, as explained in this article by Mr. St. Nihal Singh

Photo of a large group of women (mostly, but not exclusively British) gathered around a large table, some with papers in front of them

Caption:
This group was taken at the third anniversary meeting (in Whiteley's Indian Room), of the Eastern League, which, for three years, has worked indefatigably to supply comforts for Indian fighters. Seated in the front row are Lady Balfour, Lady Seymour King, Lady Sydenham, Lady Fremantle and Lady Hayes Sadler (President of the League); The Indian lady (seated) is Mrs. Gupta, wife of an Indian civilian, a zealous worker in behalf of Indian soldiers. The lady in sari (standing) is Mrs. P. K. Roy, who, with Mrs. Bhola Nauth, helped to found the League.
Excerpt from the article accompanying the preceding photo

The days, last week, when Indian I women and school-girls co-operated with the wives of officials, from Lady Chelmsford downwards, on behalf of the soldiers that India is maintaining in the firing line on three Continents, will go down in Indo-British annals as the day when a new bond of {fellowship was established be-tween India and Britain. Wealthy Indians vied with one another to subscribe funds. His Highness the Nizam of Hyderabad led the list by his splendid gift of Rs.100,000. Seth Sukhlall Karnani, banker, of Calcutta, defrayed the cost of 5,000,000 Union Jack button-hole flags. Mr. B. Borooch, of the Royal Exchange, Calcutta, paid for the pro- duction of 3,000,000 postage seals, designed by Mrs. C. F. Ambler, of Monghyr. People with lesser resources contributed their mite. Those unable to do anything else bought emblems sold by Indian and British women in towns and cantonments all over India.

Among the flags offered for sale was the A Star of India. Mrs. Rambhaj Dutt Choudhry, who is a niece of Sir Rabindranath Tagore, the Indian laureate, and one of the foremost of Indian women, urged Lady Chelmsford to adopt it because it was the national emblem of India. In accepting the suggestion her Excellency settled the disputes that have raged for decades between community and community over the question of a national flag for India.

Journalist & suffragette Ida B. Wells-Barnett was a founding member of the NAACP. She was known for her tireless crusade against lynching.

After the lynching of her friend, Tommie Moss, https://tinyl.io/7Zwg, Wells-Barnett investigated the causes of lynching.

Her writings on white mob violence resulted in her Memphis, TN newspaper being torched; she moved to Chicago afterward. https://tinyl.io/7Zwi
