How much do you share with followers | potential customers?

I have a #kofishop & page where I currently sell monthly wallpapers & commissioned art pieces. I want to build up to selling stickers & stationery ephemera as well as some small crochet goods. However, it's taken me some time to build up to this financially. I'm formerly homeless, so my business is currently fully reliant on current shared household income [shared with spouse]; we each get an allowance monthly, and I'm earmarking some of mine for my business. I don't want to leave my followers | customers hanging, but I'm not sure how to present this information or if I need to? I thought about maybe a giveaway or something which requires participants to make a donation, but I'm not sure if this is a good idea, either.

Was thinking this morning how media loves to talk about downtown office-area lunch counters having a hard time since office workers shifted to work-from-home, but they don't explore neighbourhood cafes that do great business now with the #WFH people able to nip out for coffee and a snack at their local. Also all those who go out for lunch near home for a change of scene, or to meet with a colleague/customer/consultant.

Quantified societal benefits of work-from-home, with ramifications.

Counterargument: supposition and emotive handwaving.

It seems reasonably arguable that copiously expending clock time plus energy both physical and mental needs to be justified with hard numbers, for reasons spanning mundane to sublime.

What is the numeric justification for "we each need to waste thousands of hours and thousands of dollars to enable sitting at our particular desks?"

People who #WorkFromHome all the time ‘cut emissions by 54%’ against those in office

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/sep/18/people-who-work-from-home-all-the-time-cut-emissions-by-54-against-those-in-office

> Study in US shows one day a week of remote working cuts emissions by just 2% but two or four days lowers them by up to 29%

The environmental benefits alone should be the #1 selling point for #WorkFromHome. Less traffic, less CO₂, less pollution, less vehicle infrastructure required, etc. etc.

Any work that can be done from home should be done from home.

Good Monday morning, Fediverse! I'm looking for my next role, hoping to get #FediHired.

Right now I'm a principal engineer and team lead for certificate infrastructure at a major US company. My day-to-day work focuses on PKI infrastructure/operations, Windows, and Active Directory. I get to help developers understand both the Why and How of the best practices for using certificates, along with keeping the certificate infrastructure humming along.

Working with Information Security, we've implemented company-wide multi-factor authentication for ~30,000 people. I've designed and executed migrating from on-prem PKI (Microsoft ADCS) to Certificates-As-A-Service, which reduced our total operating costs by about half. The includes dropping our datacenter footprint from multiple physical devices down to a couple of VMs.

Outside of the technical responsibilities, I'm mentoring and training junior/new teammates to build their skills and their confidence. Feedback from the management of our development and applications teams is that I've reinvigorated relationships and made certificate discussions something folks look forward to. And while nobody enjoys an outage, both managers and fellow individual contributors have told me that my calm, confident, and methodical presence is critical to both morale and quick resolution.

My current position doesn't offer much in the way of Azure exposure, but in my previous role I built out a Windows Virtual Desktop (now Azure Virtual Desktop, AVD) ecosystem from scratch when the pandemic first began and we had to send everyone to work from home on super-short notice. Nobody missed a day of work for lack of technical resources.

What I want from my next role is either a similar technical lead/principal level infrastructure/operations IC position or moving into management of a similar team.

If you're looking for a technical leader (with or without management responsibilities) to help shape and maintain your Windows/Active Directory environment, someone who can build relationships across a large organization, let's chat. DM me for email or Signal.

Current residence is in Syracuse, NY, but I'm open to relocation.

Boosts appreciated.

Since this is my #personal #friendica server, I'll add #YetAnotherIntroduction post. 😃

I am what I would consider a pretty boring dad to five kiddos, from Lawrence KS. I'm most definitely #introverted, and in a past life I'd much rather be #reading a good book or playing some #JRPG on whatever system is current.

These days, I can generally be found at home, doing the #WorkFromHome thing as an application #SystemAdministrator dealing with lots of #OracleCloud fun (...not).

Downtime has me learning #clojure, #typescript, #angular, #emacs and basically anything shiny that catches my eye.

I've been #keto for the last few years, doing maintenance mode for most of that time, with no plans to change any time soon. It's a lifestyle for me, not a diet.

I've got a handful of accounts on the #fediverse, one of which is my single user #mastodon instance. I'm trying different things out to see which I prefer most.

@swrogers -- My First Friendica Account
@swrogers -- My Main Friendica Account, and main fedi account

@swrogers@firefish.social -- Over on the official Fire Fish instance
@swrogers@infosec.exchange -- Over on Infosec Exchange

So why continue with doing 'wrong'?

Or is this just a high level control system attitude issue?

Remote work is the best and most important thing to happen to humanity since the synthesis of penicillin or the invention of refrigerators.

Before remote work, only a tiny fraction of a percent of the global south population could overcome all the immigration barriers to obtain a visa for wealthy countries and seize an opportunity for a great career.

For that small percentage, it meant leaving friends and relatives, spending all their savings on relocation, and enduring a long, exhausting, and often humiliating immigration process with no guarantees.

Remote work transcends borders, cultural differences, and geopolitical tensions. It’s one of the most precious gifts humanity has received from technological development over the last centuries.

Yet, we still debate whether we should hire only in person or if remote work is a good thing.

Hello! I'm a #JobSeeker looking to #GetFediHired for my first corporate job since graduating from college in December 2020.

My job preferences are already stated in my #LinkedIn profile, but I'll expand upon them here.

I'm mainly considering any part-time #Remote positions related to #DataEntry, #WebDev, #WebDesign, #GraphicDesign, #Blogging, #Podcasting, etc.

I've always been interested in technology & design ever since my teen years, so having the opportunity to work for a decent company in that field would be an honor.

Since I have an official autism diagnosis under my belt, I'm willing to work through obtaining any necessary accommodations with future bosses & managers to ensure that I can be a highly productive employee.

NOTE: My resume is currently a bit out of date, but I will make it available for anyone to read as soon as it's fully updated.

If anyone has any questions and/or would like to offer me an interview, my DMs are always open for recruiters.

P.S. Any boosts on this toot are greatly appreciated! 💜

So few workers go into the office now that more than one-third of desks sit empty all week
https://fortune.com/2023/08/22/remote-work-empty-desks-all-week/

Some key stats from the article:
- "The report, from Australian workplace sensor provider XY Sense, found that 36% of so-called workpoints — cubicles and desks — are never occupied, “indicating a general oversupply.” Of those that are used, 29% were for three hours or less on a given day."
- "Overall, office utilization is stuck at about 50% of pre-pandemic levels."

Since this is the reality of the situation, why are so many companies and senior managers hellbent on getting workers back into the office? Surely they can see from productivity that people who work from home are as good or better at the job as people who work in the office?

If your company forces you to drive to the office twice a week while it wasn't an issue for the last three years it's properly time for a change.

I did adjust my personal situation to the ongoing work at home allowance. It would cost me around 1 - 1,5h per route. It's only around 35 km but there is always a lot of traffic and car accidents every day.

Not sure how I should think about this, whats your opinion on enforcing something like this?

I know that working from home is a huge privilege and going to a workplace is the situation for most people, but still enforcing it feels bad to me.

I do work as a develop and the team I'm working with is located in another office so I won't be able to work more efficient with them.

"New study shows 18% productivity decline by those working from home"

Color me skeptical. My reasons:

1. This "study" is a "working paper" and not peer-reviewed.

2. They claim to have accounted for accuracy in the paper, but doing this is notoriously hard. They could easily have made mistakes when they looked at accuracy.

(By "accuracy" I mean the accuracy of the data entry. You've gained nothing if you're going faster in the office, but also make more mistakes.)

3. Correlation is not causation.

4. Correlation is not causation.

5. Correlation is not causation.

If I had a dime for every crackpot who confuses correlation and causation, I'd be a rich man.

Illustration: some study shows that there is a correlation between taking a 30-minute walk per day, and better health. Someone latches onto this and says that everyone should walk 30 minutes per day to improve their health. They did not account for the fact that people who are healthy in the first place are those capable to take a walk every day. Nor do they account for the fact that those people who can afford the walk probably have money. When you have to work two jobs, the walk goes out the window. So it is not the daily walks that make people healthy, it is being healthy and having money that makes people able to take the walks.

I'm not at all convinced that there NOT is something else at play in this "study" and that correlation and causation have been confused.

I don't have proof of this, only an inkling. I've gone very quickly over the study.

Irony is alive and kicking

"Zoom has told staff to come into the office more often.
Workers who live within a "commutable distance" of the company's offices, including in the UK, will be expected to make the journey on designated team days.
Zoom had been slower than many companies to enforce such a mandate, perhaps aware of its public perception as a key enabler of working from home."

Studies show remote workers work longer hours and are more productive. Roughly a half-hour per day of the time they save on their commute goes into work.

And I'd bet the average home, despite not being designed for work, is still *way less* distracting than an open-plan office.

I fully support the hybrid work model. For many of today’s jobs, there’s little reason for employees to work at the office 5 days a week. 2-3 days at the office is a good balance.

@futurebird I think that this is another thing that activitypub can be made to do in addition to all the stuff it already takes the form of

I think there’s a bit of a need for a work from home but ‘check in’ sort of arrangement which isn’t the conventional microboggling thoroughly time wasting meaningless noise that exists already on the fediverse (that we’re all here for all day anyway)

It has to be something that’s a bit more continuous and serious, but not so serious that it resembles linked in, and it’d have to be mostly for logging time and achievements and starring other people’s achievements and time/effort spent

It’d be like a sort of calendar and timesheet but fun, it’d have to be not like a real job (in that if I want to put a masturbation break in the time sheet, it’s allowed) but it should be something that one would take at least a bit seriously and not just forget it exists after having hilarious fun with it for a few days of absurdity then nothing

It’d be networky, in that it’s all very well logging your own time but there’s a lot of leverage in being slightly accountable (~0.5%?) to other people because you said you were going to do something and did

It could also be a sort of help / problem removal platform but that’s not the main thing (or who knows, maybe it might)

But it won’t in most ways resemble being on mastodon, yet it’s activitypub

I've commuted four out of five days so far this week, and will make it all five tomorrow. I'm getting my youngest down to a daycamp each day in downtown Houston (or close enough).

I do not miss #commuting.
I do miss my blender for breakfast shakes.
And my #cats.
And the time I'm spending sitting in traffic when I could have been doing other things.

At least I get to go back to routine next week, from home!

Every time I read talk by corporations and managers about worker productivity over top of all else this springs to mind:

I feel like the whole Food Truck Industry really missed out on an opportunity when so many people were #WorkFromHome during the #pandemic.
Ice cream trucks, taco trucks, cheese steak trucks--I want an endless parade of food rollin' through my neighborhood.

Interesting... Apple offers a Vision Pro 3D simulator for Xcode with different room and lighting environments, so you don't really need a physical Vision Pro AR Headset to develop apps for it.
