The next big labor dispute may be kicking into high gear today. The 53K-strong culinary workers union in Vegas, is voting today on a strike authorization. If it passes, a strike could be called at any time. With both Formula 1 racing, and the Super Bowl on the horizon, the last thing that Strip resorts want is a labor shortage. If the #PortTalbot 'deal' to decarbonise #steel production (funding new technology, but also losing around 3,000 jobs) is typical, then the #GreentTransiton will need a clear & well supported plan for #workers transit into new sustainable industries/sectors.
The IMF reckons this will only effect around 1% of workers over the next decade (not unlike the the 4% reallocation of work by the shift to services since the 1980s), but what is key is the effected workers are supported, not abandoned!

Hmmm... one of the reasons I think the US has (in only some ways) a better small business history than the UK, is its actually quite tolerant of failures & doesn't hold it against Directors.... this allows people to quickly try again. Of course, there are problems with that approach & #workers need (as always) good transitional support, but where failure is not due to illegality, then I'm an advocate of a less harsh sanction (accepting this should only extend to 'good faith' failures)

2. data on WFH seems to indicate workers are happier when hybrid working than when in the office full-time; whatever, they say, managers prefer fearful workers who're easier to manage
A quick reminder that despite #corporatemedia #concerntrolling the #autoindustry “already raked in $21 billion in profits this year so far, and handed $5 billion of those profits away to shareholders in the form of stock buybacks this year”

One of the hidden costs of #longtermsickness & the crisis in #socialcare is the toll it takes on in-work #carers trying to balance #work & care, with many employers not knowing how extensive the issue is.

While, as FT notes today, the first step to helping such employees navigate this situation, is to know about it, how many will trust their bosses not to uses such info against them?
More pain in the #housingcrisis as #rents rise on average by 12% in August (rising to 17% in #London)... far outstripping #inflation.
Natyionally the average rent is now: £1,304 (London £2,332).
For context, the average take-home pay that month was £2,673, suggesting rents now account for over half #workers pay (on average).
Compounded by other aspects of inflation, a winter of misery for renters is inevitable....

There are simple solutions to protect workers from excessive heat on the job—providing water and rest in a shaded or air-conditioned space, acclimatizing new workers, and training managers and workers on how to recognize and respond to heat stress.

The UK is an economy where real rewards flow upwards to the elite, whereas the rest of us are slowly but surely seeing our income & wealth stagnating or reduced.
No wonder workers are increasingly (rightly) convinced the economic system in the UK works against them & their families!

Looking at the NHS #workforce plan, the IFS thinks that in 12 years time it would mean that 1 in 11 #workers is employed by the #NHS; partly driven by the NHS' own assessment of rising needs & partly due to the likely unobtainable #productivity targets the plan uses to keep its numbers down (at the moment).
This will require a major rethink of how we fund the NHS; the Q. is whether our #politicians are up to the leadership required to get us to that point.
A healthy nation will not be cheap!
