Yes. I use symbolism. It's kind of inescapable. [shrugs] I write innuendo. I write double-entendre. I write simile. And, I write metaphor. I'll use any sort of elocution that can twist meaning into implication if need be.
Do I design it? Not very often—I'll /never/ write a Wuthering Heights or Finnegan's Wake—but sometimes appropriate symbology is the difference between the cut of a serrated blade and a razor. It depends on the wound you intend to make.
The deepest example I can recall offhand is what happened to my devil-girl MC on a rainy night, on a backwoods throughway, during lightning storm. Crude would be to mention or detail what /actually/ happened; I never do. There is lightning, being dragged through mud, slipping down slopes, jagged branches illuminated by strobes of light, and a whistling uncaring wind that buffets her from soggy handholds she really needs. He throws aside her actions as if she's fighting the unrelenting storm itself. Thrown rocks and sticks elicit a flash of teeth in the darkness as she reaches flooded pavement—only to realize with his shoes and longer legs, she can't out run him.
Despite crushing understanding, realization strikes: /It's not only her./ If she doesn't stop him, another woman will suffer, then another, as she has for her failure. It's the final spark for her to perform a miracle.
A deadly, fiery miracle.
In that circle of fire is forged someone who feels the thrill of knowing she will never be chattel again, who's suddenly confident she will succeed if she decides she must. Hidden inside, however, hides someone still callously cut, hardly healing, forever festering.

#WritersCoffeeClub Ch 1 #22 — Would you ever consider collaborating on a book?
In the first instance, I have a novella length work that I know how it starts, know what needs to happen, and know what things need to happen when it ends. The characters are well developed, but open-ended because it is referred to as a subplot intersecting another novel. It's a fantasy naval engagement story. The skipper has unfairly never been promoted due to a grotesque disability, but is given a warm-body command on a museum-piece in the last days of her commission, only to have her ship called into service to protect the capital. I've no naval experience to do the story justice. Note the story is neither mainstream nor is it commercial. It ain't happening. My beta reader will know which story I refer to.
In the second instance, I'd certainly accept an invite to write in author's world whose series I've connected with. No expectation that'll ever happen, tho.
In the third instance, None of my close friends are writers, so I don't think I'll find a Larry Niven & Jerry Pournelle relationship any time soon.

It's high time to stop denying that Amy Has Fangs is, in fact, part of the horror genre. Although it features few actual deaths and leans heavily on comedy, it doesn't shy away from gore, creepy atmospheres, the depravity of humanity, or other dark topics. That said, although it has a romantic subplot, it really isn't a romance, despite containing vampires.
It's a horror book
Time to stop denying that

The antagonist is very charismatic. She's kind and compassionate and everyone loves her. Well, not everyone...
The protagonist tries to disappear into a crowd, when she can, and would prefer that nobody notice her. When working however, she leads by example and brings everyone along where she goes, giving credit where due. She has everyone's back, though she's no-nonsense and doesn't tolerate stupidity. Then she fades away again until the next time. She's not for everyone, but for those that get her, she has loyal followers.

I use Didot, Palatino, or Times New Roman. I prefer serif fonts because I have mild dyslexia and serifs help me spot wrong words during revision, when I read the story aloud. For manuscripts, I'd use Courier. For hardcopy, I'll rely on professionals.

Today in Labor History September 19, 1952: The United States barred Charlie Chaplin from re-entering the country after a trip to England. In 1947, his black comedy, Monsieur Verdoux, was released. In the film, he criticized capitalism and its reliance on wars and weapons of mass destruction. The FBI launched a formal investigation of him 1947, after public accusations that he was a communist. Chaplin denied the charges, calling himself a “peace monger.” Nevertheless, he protested the HUAC hearings and the U.S. trials of Communist Party members. Representative John Rankin called Chaplin's presence in Hollywood “detrimental to the moral fabric of America.” Writer George Orwell prepared list of people he believed were communists, which he gave to British intelligence before he died in 1949. The list included Chaplin and Michael Redgrave, as well as Paul Robeson, Katherine Hepburn, John Steinbeck and Orson Welles.

This is the reason I am on Mastodon. I hope that didn't sound callus or self-serving, but it is a first step for me going from traditional commercial agent-mediated publishing to publishing commercially myself.
By being here, I am making an effort to help others with my experience as a published author and am encouraging writers who are feeling the less fun side of writing. As always, I am open to questions either as public comments because #commentingIsCool or via private mention toots.
I'm also getting samples of my writing out there, and preparing to go with a website in the near future. In the background, I'm revising unpublished manuscripts and publishing some non-commercial novel-length works on another site under different alias.

#PennedPossibilities 72 — MC POV: Describe a recent dream.
I woke feeling claustrophobic. I flailed my hands, found them gloved, clinked the fishbowl surrounding my head. I blinked. Hadn't I just read a newspaper article of the 200th anniversary of profound discovery?
I focused—and saw them: Plates of glass... No /crystal/ floating, gliding, maintaining position. Bright searchlights gleamed, each a minor star. Fuzzy lights: Nebulae. Two-hundreds standards away, I saw an egg-shaped crystal-scaph. White with black-orientation lines and the words HOME-SPACE. It got smaller as I watched.
A daemon had lifted the vehicle on a wish and a miracle. A night angel maneuvered it once in space.
Space.
Space! I was...
My tether flapped around, spewing frost. Snapped.
I jerked, starting rotating, A blue marble rotated into view and I screamed.

I love writing blog posts, it's so much fun. 😁😍 I even enjoy rewriting over and over again until each sentence sounds just right. 😀
This synopsis is two and a half double-spaced pages, and it's not getting any less than that. Most agents prefer it to be no longer than two double-spaced pages, but I just can't get there.
But the fact that I got it to just over 1% of the total length of the book is impressive (to me, at least). 😅

#Technical #documentation is too often written by the engineers/etc who built the system being documented. Most of what a normal person first exposed to the system would need to know to make sense of it is so #obvious to them they don't even think about it.
I do my best to try to get into users' headspace when writing docs. But there's something to be said for having a dedicated technical #writer who can be that typical user and document what end users actually need.

I'm curious... how many hours of sleep do you get on an average night?
Anyone can answer, but I'm especially curious about my fellow writers. Does a lack of sleep throw off your creativity, or does it not matter?
Since I can't answer, I'll start. I average 5-6 hours of sleep/night. If it's a "good sleep", I'm fine. If not, I'm much slower getting into "the zone".

to speak the language
of songbirds;
maybe
on the branch of a cherry tree
hidden in the pink,
snow like blossoms,
a soliloquy
about the joy of
hollow bones in flight,
or perhaps
just outside the window
perched
In a yaupon
flush with scarlet berries,
a lengthy sonnet to the sun
as it highlights
the way you ripple the bath
with your wings.
It's a small thing
to want,
I think,
just the one day
to wake without the density
of bones and
sing.
