Pro tip. I recently saw an author announce an Amazon Kindle offer of their new book in advance of the actual date. I'm guessing their publisher didn't pass on the warning that is an absolute no-no as far as Amazon are concerned - it can be literally a deal-breaker, right now and going forward.
Edited to clarify - this is when Amazon decide to offer you a Daily Deal or another of their own promotions. Not if the author/publisher chose to do their own offer

It's been interesting adapting my novel into a screenplay, paring it down to the essence of the story, not being precious with some of the beautiful language in the novel, getting across what makes the friendship so special between my two main characters.
I put Chapter 17 to bed #today - six more to go.
Fewer stats than last time (don't want to overegg it):

*I'm really quite pleased with this, mainly because it's the average across the full 58 calendar days, and there's been quite a few of those where no writing happened.
**Up from 8 in the last report, and you can see the effect of this in the graph. I did a minor replot of the "soggy middle" to tighten up the action. Also, I'd allowed one scene per character right in the middle of that action, which takes place on a new island. Turned out this was major overkill, so cutting, or merging, those scenes took me under the 125k predicted word count for a spell. As you can see it's slowly climbing back to converge with the target line again.

When I was writing Herakles and the Cyprian Centaur, I researched horse cocks for the centaur character and came across a zoophilia message board that was both incredibly helpful for my writing and incredibly weird to read. I thought nothing could faze me but it turns out learning about how to give oral sex to a pony did 😅

I have been thinking about cross-posting to ease the load of maintaining a writer's presence on social media. In the end, I decided against it because I have very different usage models and post types between Mastodon and X (formerly Twitter).
Also, should X become a deep cesspit that it already is, writers might be leaving there in large numbers.
An idea on how to rework my WIP has slowly been forming over the last few weeks and I think it’s time I start pantsing and see where it goes. Heaven knows I need to write something, even though I strongly suspect it’ll be garbage.

I write. It literally soothes me, even when it makes me angry, excited, or sad.
2021/2022 I suffered slow mental health decline, followed by the world crumbling around me. After a whopper meltdown, some ongoing medical treatment, and writing, I began to climb out of the ashes. Then...
During the corporate return to the office (RTO) phase last year, I was tossed out of the corporate window. Instead of landing with a splat, I spread my writing wings to fly (read: take a one-year unpaid leave of absence/sabbatical).
The universe shined on me while I took this opportunity to write my face off. Since August 2022 until now (Sept 2023), 22 pieces of my heart and soul have received acceptances from journals online and in print. There is an eight-year-old girl inside me screaming for joy at the chance to be let out of her corporate prison.
When life gives you lemons, trade them for something more useful.
Or, when life demands a forced (and impossible) return to the office after a mental health breakdown, embrace the opportunity to be your true, authentic self.
Currently, I'm fascinated with #microfiction +/- 100 words. However, I write and read several formats, genres, and word counts.

A good friend of mine beta read The Way of the Wielder, then demanded to beta read book 2 (which has a name, but I'm still uncertain of it - it's kind of a mouthful, and I'm debating on changing it, even though it makes sense).

I'm curious... how many hours of sleep do you get on an average night?
Anyone can answer, but I'm especially curious about my fellow writers. Does a lack of sleep throw off your creativity, or does it not matter?
Since I can't answer, I'll start. I average 5-6 hours of sleep/night. If it's a "good sleep", I'm fine. If not, I'm much slower getting into "the zone".

Discussion elsewhere about authors buying other authors' books prompts me to observe that we cannot expect to make a living by taking in each other's washing.
I wonder who understands that expression now? And what once common idioms get a blank stare today - and from what age groups?
For example, a check with family and friends' kids a few years ago found none of them had ever heard of the Marie Celeste.

PSA. When you ask an author to 'take a quick look' at your work for free, be aware what you are asking.
I have spent 4 hours of focused concentration today on critique of 25k words for a friend - a favour asked months ago that I'm happy to do, now I have the time. If I'd line-edited the text as I went along? I could easily have spent double that time.
This is why I do this sort of favour very rarely indeed, and only for a very few people.

I just told someone about sending out a novel manuscript soon, and how I was planning on sending it everywhere and hoping for the best, because I worked hard and stand behind it.
The response was "Sure, if I don't play the lottery I for sure won't win", and, although partly true, that really hurt and challenged my will to work on my future. Do you get that?
