I wrote a character who grew up poor and never got any breaks. She was applying for waitress jobs:
"...trying to get a job at one of those fancy restaurants. Places with hostesses, with the lights turned low, fine dining. Where they just asked you to wear black slacks or a skirt with a button-down shirt, all classy like."
She didn't get one.

I use clothing to help set the mood:
I say in my corner of the bar, dressed in black, with a dark hat pulled down over my eyes. My style said Leave me alone.
A bartender in two layered tank tops (not too tight!), to make it easy for her to flair while she works--because bottles and shakers can hang up unpredictably on clothing.

Other than the MC and his cardigan, there's a character who likes pastels, another who is Goth, and so on. Clothing is not something that the MC spends a lot of time noticing, so I go for the broad strokes.

A. I think about the climate and setting and the character and try to reflect all of that by describing clothes as another character would see them. Fashionista is going to notice *every detail* but the person just admiring will only say "jeans."
In my current project, everyone is supposed to wear uniforms, but there's 'clothes from home' which is significant, too.

End of last week I got invited to be a +1 to Fyrecon--a virtual writer's conference that's new to me.
It turned out to be pretty awesome--all four (well, 3 1/2) days of it. I went to a LOT of presentations--enough to make me cross-eyed.

I've done a lot of odd work in my life, including not working and being homeless for extended periods. None of it was what I wanted, like being a prizefighter or using my training to make a criminal organization more efficient and less likely to fall afoul of the law. Both were unexpectedly fun, with the former ultimately more satisfying than the latter. I've since moved on. I won't hurt people—and if you force me, that's the rock you'll break yourself on—but I can fight. I can help people achieve their goals, even violent ones, even when they don't know what their goals are, or why. I'm good at puzzles, policies, and people, magic and mysteries, and finding and fixing problems.
I'm a troubleshooter.
I'd prefer to be a scholar, but that's why I earn and save. To become one. Leave it all behind. One day. If I live that long.

A place to live, what would be the most important factors?
A major issue in the WIP. Mrs Ashton aspires to live in a fashionable address in London, failing which close to one, with occasional stays in the country houses of the wealthy. She quite liked her stay in France. She likes nature ordered and with refreshments on hand.
Braddie wants to live in the country, preferably the North Country, and not beholden to anyone rich or male.

I wrote my retirement letter today. It took a village to write. I thank all those that helped me psychologically to get to the point of writing it, as well as those that gave me ideas and the help I needed to get it from my head to the page. The characters in my novels are all sort of confident, but I am all sort of not. I thank everyone on Mastodon who gave me a good word or encouragement, too. I announced last month, but this letter is for the president of the company and makes it official when I hand it over.
I'm expecting an interesting reaction when I hand it over. I may report on that. I may publish the letter (which is quite standard and, I'm told, unexpectedly quite gracious) after my retirement mid-December.

#PennedPossibilities 151 — Are you proud of your MC? Has she accomplished anything worthy of that pride and satisfaction?
My MC has gotten herself into a lot of bad things, illegal things. Similar to Jessica Rabbit, who was "drawn that way," my MC was raised and manipulated into becoming someone's sharp tool. The wrong person grabbed the hilt. Such things can't end well, can they? She's made the right choices for the right reasons and saved many lives along the way, but it's not all she's done. Judged by 21st century morality, she'd be found lacking. She thinks she's evil, but I disagree.
If our world had more people who think as she does, on the whole it would be a better place.

#PennedPossibilities 150—What inspired the idea for your WiP
Since we are talking R.S., it has to be what inspired the character.
My WiP is as mechanically constructed as you can get. I realized my character had a half-year where nothing happened between stories, and that got me thinking.
The difficulty here it that because it would be both a sequel and a prequel, I needed the story to have a reason never be reported while still being knock your socks off. Something that could still be shoehorned into later stories with a phrase like "Oops, that's a state secret. Don't repeat that," and not cause a disruption.
(I actually did. You know. Shoehorn that line into a later story, before completing this WiP.)
So what ideas did I throw at the wall?
An invasion of Earth nobody knew about (which comes from five chapters I never continued). My devil-girl had to had to stop it. I wanted to make it useful for ongoing stories by getting the devil-girl back on the main antagonist' radar by my devil-girl inadvertently doing the MA an enormous solid (i.e., saving Her ass).
Check. Check Check.
Didn't quite take off. My devil-girl wasn't biting. What was the story idea missing?

Is there some kind of scam going around where writers get approached for a screenplay based on their book? I just got a weird email, completely out of the blue.
#WritersCoffeeClub Ch 3 Nbr 27 — How do you feel about the use of AI in writing?
Because there is nuance here, I will point out that unless you write longhand, or use a typewriter (what's that?), you use AI in your writing. Spell checkers, grammar checkers, auto-complete, search engines, lots of things use AI.
Importantly, I don't and won't use AI for /composition/. Why deserves some explanation:
It's /not/ me writing, so in essence I am not saying anything. For me, that's what being an author is all about.
AI generated text cannot be copyrighted and therefore cannot be sold. I submitted a short story a couple weeks ago and I had to avow I hadn't used any AI.
AI is statistical pattern matching without /any understanding of underlying meaning./ It is indeed not intelligence of any kind, even artificial. Just an advanced algorithm.#AI is a slick but effective marketing term, like "Natural." As such, everything generated has to be checked for (a) accuracy, (b) unintended meaning, and (c) inadvertent plagiarism.
When would I use AI? Beyond what I pointed out in the first paragraph, I'd use AI analysis tools that could check consistency, for example eye color or writing style over the length of a novel, or series of novels. I'd welcome something that could act as a model reader, pointing out how characters changed, inconsistent plot points, inadvertent red herrings, use of strong language compared to weak language, etc. Something that could profile characters and settings in a story would be very useful. If they existed. Such things would make revision easier and more efficient.
Whilst I'd never use AI generated art, for reasons stated above and for personal ethical reasons, I would use it to get visualizations of ideas, places, or characters—which I'd never publish.

It has been important though, as whilst I am very reliant on dialogue so far, much of it is helping me shape my ideas for what will come out of the story as a whole once I completely rewrite it.

There's some profanity, but I avoid it even in modern settings. For fun, my devil-girl stops people by saying "Language!" at them; only the stupid ones test her resolve. In fantasy or futurist settings, I invent words more appropriate for the time. In one set of stories the f-word they use is "flap" or "flapping," and even in context it's not particularly offensive; it's neither insulting nor sexual. It just signals frustration On the other hand, calling a day angel (or worse a night angel who doesn't have feathers) a featherbrain, them's fighting words. Indeed, though my devil-girl calls herself a devil girl all the time, that's not a proper word for her kind and certainly not for /you/ to use for her, unless you're her riding partner—at which point she might find it endearing.

Something that will intrigue readers into buying the book. I'm no designer and suspect I'll seek professional advise if I self-publish. If I conventionally publish, the publisher will consider such a thing advertising and I will consider myself lucky if they ask for suggestions.
Once I was asked. Two main characters got on the cover, a Japanese teenager and a sheepdog/human chimera. What was drawn were a caucasian vogue model and a wookie. The book sold out the printing, so I guess I can't complain.

I've had taken pictures to go alongside my #writings for a while, I'm wondering if this will be a thing I will be able to do! Do I need to have [an author's website specifically for promoting your writing]?
Not necessarily, but the reality of selling books, even posting stories, is that there are intervals (months, maybe years), where readers aren't seeing anything new from you. The biggest tragedy is to be forgotten in the interval. You want readers to stay engaged. To do this, providing periodic news, story bits, interesting research, engaging links, etc. daily or weekly keeps them in mind. This was explained to me by a successfully self-publishing erotic-romance author and horror author. Even conventionally published authors should consider some sort of self-promotion. My experience with conventional publication is that the publisher may promote the big names over you, so some of it is still your responsibility. Your writing and their publishing are both businesses. That said, even fan fiction sites have blogging and advertising tools one should take advantage of.

Today has been a realisation that I kind of messed up the structure of the first part of the book but the content isn't actually that bad.
Basically what i've written as one massive, massive chapter should really be small snippets at the end of like 6 or 7 chapters, so that's something.
That would explain why I'm so far in and still feel ludicrously early in the plot.
I now have two novels available as ebooks. They are contemporary sci-fi stories about psychic powers, set against a backdrop of our modern struggle against the climate crisis and corporate corruption. I hope you will pick them up and if you enjoy them, please do leave me a review!

Not so productive today. I must be mentally gearing down to the weekend. Today I only managed about 570 words. Lots of back-tracking and correcting though so I probably wrote more words, but tossed them out again.

Not a lot to talk about today really. It's been a pretty relaxed day compared to the rush of the last week or so. I'm trying to shake off the last dregs of feeling ill and get back into the swing of things.
I'm very close to the halfway point though, even if I'm still only on chapter three. This bloody book I swear!

This was quite a relaxed day, mostly spent getting through the larget part of the main crux of the first act of the story.
It was actually quite enjoyable, in part because I've slowly started to introduce a bunch of new characters that have gestated from not a lot of planning on my part.
I know vaguely where I'm going but there's a giant gap before I get to the next familiar landmark!

Not going to lie, felt like hell today, and getting to par was a bit of a nightmare, but I made it to par, so I'm at that point where if I'm stubborn enough nothing will stop me.
I did a lot of research on relatively obscure ballet for this chapter, which so far is the most esoteric bit of research I've had to do for this novel. I'll keep you posted if anything tops that.

That's an achievement I feel good about, even I'm otherwise feeling pretty ill today.
I'm still doing some switching perspectives, and I'm a bit worried that I'm still ostensibly on chapter 2 with the story having not gotten going properly yet.
That's a future me problem; I'll have a lot more to add to the end of this one than the last two books, for sure.

The irony of this update being so late is that I actually wrote 1600 of the 1700 words I got done yesterday about 90 minutes after posting the last update.
I went to a wonderful wedding reception, made par on this and just got back home. This was the day I was worried the most about so I'm over the moon about that.

Not an ideal day. I made par, but it was a bit of a hectic, quite stressful day on the whole.
I've still managed to get myself trapped in an opening establishing scene, but I think that's set me up for the second half of chapter one. This is probably the consequence of having parallel plots, and something that will be fixed down the road.
Do any of you ever dream about your characters? I never have before but, last night, I dreamed the antagonist of the current story I'm working on was after me. 😳 Funny how he was the first one to show up.
