@26aafa19 Interesting story:
"Since stone carving & installation were the most expensive items for the overall project, the monks decided to tackle that job themselves. This meant learning the whole CNC stone-carving workflow, all about stone cutting machinery, operating CNC machines, CAD modelling, CAM programming, stone masonry & construction techniques...

The Brawl of the Wild between the Bobcats and Grizzlies may be two weeks away in Missoula, but Pete Senger witnessed this wild brawl in the Billings Heights! Oh...DEER!
My work is most often identified by my use of bold colors, but once in a while, a scene just cries out to be black and white, like this scene I photographed in the Tetons a few weeks ago. The still reflection of Grand Teton in the Snake River, shrouded by clouds, was such a tranquil scene.

The snowflakes are piling up in Montana, and Billings had a record low of 8° Friday morning! I'll have your 7-day weather forecast through NEXT Friday at 4:30, 5:30 & 10pm!
It's thirteen degrees here this morning. Before stepping out to shovel our sidewalks, I think I'll light my shoes on fire.
It's 22 degrees here and getting ready to snow. While we were at the grocery store earlier today, everyone we spoke to seemed to be genuinely excited at the prospect of snow.
There's something not quite right with the people in northern Wyoming - I think we've moved to the right place.
After 10 hours of light freezing drizzle in Billings, it's a sheet of ice on roads, sidewalks, and my windshield! It wasn't bad when I left for work at 3AM, but now it's VERY icy at 8AM! Snow is coming, too! Please be careful, Montana and Wyoming!

The Wyoming Way.
I've learned that people who are doing work for you here just kind of show up and start working. The guys who worked on our deck did this. The landscapers did it as well. We just looked outside to discover people in our yard working away. 🤷♂️
Recent example - the guy who blows out our sprinklers.
Me: "Ryan, I notice there's a hole in my lawn that wasn't there yesterday."
Ryan: "Yeah, I don't wanna talk about it but it'll be fixed next week."
And it was.
Our last morning in the Tetons, we were treated to some really cool morning light at Schwabacher Landing.
It doesn't matter if the grass is still green in Montana... you know we can still get snow. The first snow of the season is coming! I'll have your 7-day weather forecast tonight!
Montana had 45-75 mph wind gusts on Tuesday! The pretty leaves on Helene's Purple Ash tree in Laurel were here yesterday, but "gone with the wind" today! 😲 🌬 🍂 🍁 🍂 🍁 🍂 🍁 🍂 🍁 🍂 🍁
I timed my first haircut in 7 weeks well on Monday... strong wind and higher fire danger on Tuesday! I'll have your 7-day weather forecast at noon!
Many more leaves are falling now, and the wind will be assisting soon... enjoy those leaves while they last!
We woke early at the hotel in Hulett, Wyoming this morning so that we could get to the Devil's Tower national monument. We got there so early we were the first ones there and there was a significant ground fog obscuring everything but the tower itself. I became as fascinated with fog burning off as the monument. I guess I'm easily distracted.
There's an asphalt foot path that completely encircles the Devil's Tower monument. We walked it this morning. 1.6 miles. When we got around the back side of the mountain, we never saw a landing pad, a Moog synthesizer, a color light panel or Richard Dreyfuss in a jumpsuit. I'm beginning to believe that Hollywood is complete bullshit.

The Dirty Deadly Front End of Nuclear Power — 15,000 Abandoned Uranium Mines (Pt. 1)
by Josh Cunnings, March 11, 2016
"The perplexing problem of these open, deadly, toxic messes was discussed between Emerson Urry and Arnie Gundersen.
"Urry: I want to go back for a minute to the uranium. We were talking about Fukushima and obviously the myriad isotopes that are put off as a byproduct of the nuclear fission that is happening in the reactor. It all starts there with the uranium, and there was quite a rush for that, and now we have all of these situations. To our understanding there are about 15,000 abandoned uranium mines that have been left in complete ruin with very little cleanup or remediation at all, just in the western United States. This has happened, by-and-large, because of an antiquated mining bill – the 1872 Mining Bill – still affecting these situations today – that kind of allowed miners to just walk away from these situations — but yet, they remain in the open leaching off tailings – blowing around #radioactive dust. I think there’s about 4,500 of these exposed mining sites just in #Navajo country – another 2,500 or so in #Wyoming. How do we deal with that situation? What does the future hold in those regards, and quite frankly, are we all being poisoned by these mines?
"Gundersen: I’ll give you another example of the same thing, and I would say 'yes' to everything you said is the quick answer. There is a mill-tailings site in Moab, #Utah. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission [#NRC] told the owner of the site that they needed to set aside six million dollars to clean it up. Well, the actual #cleanup is a billion dollars. What did the owner do? They declared #bankruptcy and walked away.
"Urry: And it wasn’t bonded? No bond?
"Gundersen: Right. It wasn’t bonded. You know, if you bonded uranium mining, you wouldn’t have uranium mining."

Some states — #Colorado, #Montana, #NewMexico, #Washington and #Wyoming — rolled back 50 percent or more of their progress since 2000. In #Oregon and #Nevada, wildfire smoke has completely erased their gains....
a single day of unhealthy smoke — in the “red” level on the federal government’s color-coded scale — gave the hospitals he was studying in central Oregon a 41 percent chance of exceeding their capacity....
University of Montana toxicologist Christopher Migliaccio tracked residents who lived through that smoke and found they showed significant decreased lung function one and two years afterward..."
It's still summer, but it will feel like autumn soon in Montana with cooler air, rain, thunderstorms, and mountain snow just days away!

Story by The Physics arXiv Blog, July 26, 2023
"The #TrinityNuclearTest on 16 July 1945 is a key incident in the blockbuster #Oppenheimer movie and in the history of humankind. Many scientists think it marks the beginning of the #Anthropocene, a new geological era characterized by humanity’s influence on the Earth. That’s because Trinity’s radioactive fallout will forever appear in the geological record, creating a unique signature of human activity that can be precisely dated.
"But there’s a problem. In 1945, radioactive monitoring techniques were in their infancy so there are few direct measurements of fallout beyond the test site. What’s more, #weather patterns were also less well understood so the spread of fallout could not be easily determined.
"As a result, nobody really knows how widely Trinity’s fallout spread across the U.S. or indeed, how the fallout dispersed from other atmospheric nuclear tests on the U.S. mainland.
"Today, that changes thanks to the work of Sébastien Philippe at Princeton University and colleagues. This team have used a state-of-the art weather simulation for the 5 days after each nuclear test to simulate how the fallout would have dispersed.
"The result is the highest resolution estimate ever made of the spread of radioactive fallout across the U.S. It marks the start of the Anthropocene with extraordinary precision and it throws up some significant surprises. Some parts of the U.S. are known to have received high levels of fallout and the new work is consistent with this. But the research also reveals some parts of the US that received significant fallout without anybody realizing.
"The findings 'provide an opportunity for re-evaluating the public health and environmental implications from atmospheric nuclear testing,' say Philippe and co.
"Between 1945 and 1962, the U.S. conducted 94 atmospheric nuclear tests that generated yields of up to 74 kilotons of TNT. (Seven other tests were damp squibs.) 93 of these tests took place in #Nevada but the first, the Trinity test in the Oppenheimer film, took place in #NewMexico.
"The new work also has implications for the way compensation is paid to people who suffered from radiation exposure. The U.S Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (#RECA) provides monetary compensation for this in various counties and #tribal lands.
"But the new work reveals places that are not covered by the Act but that also received high exposure. 'There are locations in New Mexico, and in other parts of the United States, including #Utah, #Nevada, #Wyoming, #Colorado, #Arizona, and #Idaho, where #radionuclide deposition reached levels larger than those we estimate in some counties covered by RECA,' say the researchers.
"That’s interesting work with important implications. And it has been released in conjunction with the Oppenheimer movie, presumably to give it maximum exposure, and rightly so."

"Some people are saying ‘Yes,’ like Rawlins mayor Terry Weickum.
“It is a lucky break for us to get this incredible thing in our mix,” he said. “Some people don't like it. Some people don't like ice cream. I don't know what to tell you.”"
A federal judge paused Wyoming's first-in-the-nation ban on medicated #abortion pills on Thursday, citing an ongoing lawsuit over the law's constitutionality.
The ban was set to be implemented on July 1.
The law concerns two abortion pills, one of which, mifepristone, had its FDA approval challenged earlier this year. In April, #SCOTUS ruled that #mifepristone can still be distributed pending that challenge.
Attorneys for Wyoming failed to show that allowing ban to take effect on sched wouldn’t harm plaintiffs before their case is resolved..
Plaintiffs “clearly showed probable success on merits,” judge said in granting their request to temporarily block ban
