Spring is in the air (from 21.42 GMT today to be exact).
Good to see daffodils flowering just about everywhere, like theses at the romantic ruins of Gisborough Priory, North Yorkshire, Founded in 1119 as the Priory of St Mary by Robert de Brus, the priory went on to become one of the richest monastic foundations in England until the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1540.
The property is in the care of English Heritage.

Another North York Moors stone for today's #StandingStoneSunday (portrait, needs a click).

A fine stone on Danby Rigg, set into a low cairn. Danby Rigg is chock full of Bronze Age archaeology; as well as this stone there are multiple cairns and cross dykes. The stone is a slab, broad on one side and thin and tapering on the other.

Visited April 2010.

The area is popular with hikers, cyclists, and outdoor enthusiasts, who come to explore its rugged moorland terrain.

The Sledmere garden changes with the seasons and offers an extensive collection of daffodils and other spring bulbs, vibrant tulips, wonderful scented roses and a stunning late summer display of perennials and annuals in the acclaimed double ‘exotic’ borders. 13th March 2013 - we visited the absolutely huge Fountains Abbey, in Yorkshire. Now a ruin, after Henry VIII dissolved the monasteries, reclaiming much of the materials (including the roof lead) in the process.
I saw my first (live) pheasant here too.

Later we moved on to Easby Abbey where we found some snow, and some moss.

We ended the day at The George, in Piercebridge (not pictured).

The tower of Fountains Abbey, as seen from below. A wide angle shot in black and white.
The tower has three massive arched windows, one on top of the next.
A plump and colourful pheasant. It has a blue head, with red eye/cheek patch, white collar, and shiny brown body and wings with black spots. The tail is very long in the same shiny brown, but has black stripes.
A set of wide, very worn stone stairs, covered in patchy snow with moss adorning the vertical faces.

The broad fields on the edge of Grimethorpe, covered with snow. The local area around the village is largely undeveloped, as the land was extensively mined for miles around and the ground is still not stable enough to build on. This leaves us with some beautiful views.
A view taken from old spoil heaps, which are now a rich wildlife spot. Not today though, as the ground is covered with snow and it's still snowing. The pictures looks towards the 3 giant wind turbines which now sit on the edge of the village.
Looking up the snowy hill towards newly planted trees, with a little stream weaving through the snow and lots of wild grasses growing on the hillside. When this snow melts it might become more of a river than a stream...

"Wensleydale is a very popular destination in its own right, enhanced by its central location between two other well-known tourist dales: Wharfedale and the quieter Swaledale."

Of course, Swaledale is quieter, it's all those loudspeakers in Wharfedale that makes it noisy. 😃

Another fantastic murmuration with the separate groups all forming together. I’m somewhere underneath! #murmuration #starlings #Yorkshire #Birds #birdwatching #RSPB #eastYorkshire #Serenity

A group of starlings come together like a firework display. The sky is a warm pink.

Amazing murmuration the other evening. Especially the formation of a ‘bird of prey’ shape

Kes

Now that was a proper Northern film based on a proper Northern book written by a proper Northern bloke.

Lovely morning for a walk with the pooch. Nice and crisp underfoot so no muddy paws and belly to deal with today. The lake in the valley has a thin film of ice over it. Thick enough for the geese but I suspect not for the swans.

Looking over the lake towards a sunrise with deep orange clouds on a pale blue sky. In the foreground two swans swim next to each other on a patch of unfrozen water. In the background two geese are standing on top of the ice.

I'm not saying the #weather here has been a bit #rubbish lately or anything, BUT, this Grey Heron I saw today as I went for my walk in the rain was looking distinctly grumpy.

A very grey photography of a bedraggled grey heron perching amongst grey trees on the edge of a grey lake on a grey day.

Meanwhile, today's the day the demolition properly started on Wakefield ABC Regal cinema. Opened in 1935, it's been standing empty since about 1999. I almost bought it back in 2001 (long story).

As I passed today the flytower was coming down - auditorium just about visible through the proscenium arch (such as it is now).

Things that we see as funny differ at different times in our lives. Slapstick, satire, jokes, puns and double ententres all have their appeal. Rattling the cage of established norms has been the aim of comedy writers as long as they have been writing comedy | Peter Norcliffe
