In 2018, The Method Makers posted an interview with Paul Escolar, a fantastic artist and extremely influential #yoyo player from the Bay Area. In 2021, the article was deleted during a big update to TMM's site. A few months later, Paul passed away.

It's #5AMay in the #yoyo community. 5A, also known as Freehand or Counterweight, is a style of yo-yoing that has a weight attached to the end of the string. This allows for a completely different style of play, including completely letting go of the string while playing.

#Yoyo had a little mishap Friday night, and lost about a third of his tail to something—a car door is my best guess. He's fine; the middle third of his tail is bandaged because it had to be shaved. He's not happy about staying in or wearing a collar.
Opened up a yoyo design that I created on contract for yoyotricks.com. It uses a tiny MR85 ball bearing, m3x12mm axle, and silicone response pads. The yoyo body is anodized 6061 aluminum. It turned out pretty well! #yoyo #yoyodesign

I wrote a post about the "engineer's notebooks" by Don Watson. Don is often cited as the designer of the modern ball bearing #yoyo, and these books are filled with hand-written formulas, charts, and diagrams that explain the #physics of a yo-yo.

My 10 year old nephew has gotten into yoyos and #yoyo tricks, and it made me think about when I was his age doing the same thing. I've also seen all of the custom yoyos available in both metal and #3dprinted varieties. I decided to model one up in #freecad to work with some 6701 ball bearings I had leftover from another project. It sleeps, but I think it needs more mass. Now I have a base model to modify and #3dprint however I want! #3dprinting

Working on a new bimetal #yoyo design. This is for one of my team members. Sometimes a plain color scheme is useful for evaluating the design, since it lets the other less flashy features shine brighter by comparison.

Here’s a similar yoyo design to the previous one I posted, with some differences that are mostly important to folks who play yoyo. The diameter is much bigger, the inner section is more open, the width is larger by a bit, and the steel weight rings press on from the outside, appearing to wrap over the aluminum. These changes would make it feel much different in the hand and in play.

Re-watching Farrah Siegel's #yoyo routine from the 2007 National Yo-Yo Contest and I'm really blow away. Her song, "Time Warp", fits perfect and is a clever nod to the Time Warp yo-yo trick.
The coolest part is she's two handed yo-yoing without any looping. Obviously there are lots of wraps and tangles, but if you pay attention you'll notice that she's doing Shoot The Moons and Stalls (aka Palm Stalls) instead of traditional loops. I love this style of 2A play.

Working on a yoyo design that mixes different materials for an aesthetic effect - anodized aluminum and wooden rings. I want to work on it some more, but this captures the idea pretty well. Eventually, I might get this manufactured as a special edition design for the yoyo club here in Atlanta.
