In October 2022 I fell in love with the Internet again. (Feeling the old school love, I reverted to capitalizing it!) I felt the love I had been missing for so long. And though I talked a lot to friends on other platforms praising Mastodon, I knew my joy wasn't about leaving Twitter for Mastodon. That was the inciting incident that caused me to go looking for what I already knew I wanted but did not realize was there, a vast, noncommercial online community. What I hope to find is a place where I can share the things that help me feel good—including my paintings, writing, short videos, photos, links—all in one place on the Fediverse. I'm trying out #Calckey.

 I've been oversharing online since college. I'm nearly 51. I fondly remember Lynx & NCSA Mosaic. One of my oldest surviving writings online (ca. 1997) is me complaining that the Internet has changed!

I started out on the web a couple of years ago. I don't remember. It seemed to me to be near the beginning, when .com sites barely existed! .edu, that was my "domain." But that was a long time ago. Then came the first explosion of the web (that I noticed anyway). This was a time when the web still seemed manageable, and was still largely ignored by "the masses."

It was then that I found "suck" funny. It was funny. It was "inside" at a time when the web still felt insular & therefore all their acerbic comments were right on. I hardly ever make it over to "suck" anymore. It's probably still as good as it always was (to most people) -- it's probably just me that's changed.

Now I'm into the web again. But boy it feels so big - and it's such a timesuck. And my eyes hurt all the time. (How do people work at computer monitors all day every day?) ...

The key to the web is that it's "universally available." Yeah, but so what if no one sees it? Now there's irony. As more and more desktop media moguls put up whatever their hearts' desire... who'll be consuming if everyone's producing? Makes you long for the days of 3 networks. Almost.

Similar to the issue of exposure is motivation. Now, over there at com.com.com the motivation is simple, always has been. $. Those of us for whom profit is not the issue are, I think, interested in communication and community on the internet. But so far I haven't been able to get that real "warm" feeling of community from my internet connection.

Yeah, I wrote that way. Yeah, it's annoying. I was 24.

The issue then as now is how to genuinely find people to connect with in meaningful ways and not just commercial transactions. As an artist believe me I need to be on the receiving end of more online transactions. But the Internet has enabled a level of commercialization that now threatens humanity's ability to connect and survive at all. I feel more hope now that I've found the #Fediverse.
