I had the honor of supervising the smartest Masters student at the TU Delft and she mentioned me in her thesis!! 😭❤️

She just did her defense, and it went so well!! I'm so so proud. 🥹 Determining her grade with her uni supervisors rn. #thesis #proud #academic

When I'm ruler of everything, I'm going to pass a law that at #academic #conferences, Q&A sessions should be run by putting questions in a (real or virtual) hat, which are drawn at random.

This has several advantages:

1. We'd no longer have to hear from Prof. X, who always monopolises the Q&A, and is really dull.
2. Those too shy, marginalised, or unsure of themselves to speak get their voices heard (they're probably more interesting than Prof. X, so we all win).
3. Chance operations are fun.

The German #academic references system in articles drives me crazy. Why put a full reference in footnote 6 and then have to mention, in footnote 45, where you have only a shortended reference, that you need to see footnote 6 to see the full reference. Uuugh.... I just want my author-date formatting, please! (Hunger 2023:2) with all the references at the end of the article....

Why can't I distinguish between references (author-date intext citations) and footnotes (context to the main text).

Example for crazy footnotes

I was in a seminar in Paris some time ago where they advised students to trust the editorial process in #academic journals. I have been continuously contacted by editors to review articles that include my article in the references. How could I reject such an article that refers to my work? This review process is by-default biased... I am sorry but I have to decline...

@vicgrinberg @vicgrinberg I always make the distinction that this isn't about being a scientist. This is about being an #academic. Academics do all these despicable things, as scientist they would do just fine (collaborate more, be generous with time and advice, be curious without restrictions etc.).

I always compare this to the Goofy Motor Mania cartoon, sane scientists turn into academic maniacs the moment they step on the tenure track.

What if we understand Universities as a place to develop human skills, capabilities, and relationships?

Does it still make sense to us #SALAMI #AI to do the range of tasks presented in this article?
#teaching #learning #education #academic

Examples:

1/ One exercise involves using ChatGPT to write new plays in the style of William Shakespeare.

"I'm interested in understanding, 'Hey, what does Macbeth, the historical Macbeth, think about how they were represented in the play Macbeth?'"

2/ as a "peer editor" to provide feedback about students' work in much the same way as they might have had their classmates do in the past.

"Students need to reflect and think 'Well, this feedback, does it align with my thinking and what I want to do with the project?' And they do the same with peer feedback,"

3/ Teachers could also use AI to quickly create rubrics, or to differentiate lesson plans to try to meet students' individual needs

Hopefully the [AI] tools can help teachers to be more productive so that they actually have more time to spend with students and build some of those relationships.
