#QOTD Does anyone know of a good texting app (without #Google services and doesn't phone home to them or the #developer about my keypresses) that allows you to use it in the browser, so I can "install," it on my PC?
I am going to use #Signal for some messaging, even though it isn't as #secure as I would like, or it could be (having an org that owns/controls the app and having it linked to my name/number...) because most of the #activist groups that I help with and support with my 2 decades + of experience and resources use it. I haven't gotten them moved over to something like #Threema (use Threema Libre if you do, no app store needed) #Briar that doesn't need internet, stores data locally, and doesn't phone home to anyone (https://briarproject.org/installing-briar-via-f-droid/), so it's a necessary evil.
Meme I quickly made about responses to the ongoing discussion about #searchability on the #fediverse. As a #contentCreator and #activist for #toplessEquality--which gets me banned repeatedly on all mainstream platforms even when I DO censor out my heinous female nipples (see https://www.toplesstopics.org/banned for receipts!), a primary motivator for me to use platforms like #mastodon is to be able to spread the word about #GenderEquality anti- #censorship among more potential supporters. But the lack of #searchability on Masto makes this very hard. I'm dependent on existing followers to boost my posts so others following -them- can see it, etc, but for whatever reason very few of my existing followers do. I also can't really find posts by other people outside of my instance and the people I'm following--like I've never seen another post about #vidcon besides my own, so I have no idea if anyone else on the fediverse is even messaging about it.
#Consent is of course a cornerstone of the fediverse experience, including someone consenting to whether or not they want a certain kind of content to pop up in their feeds. And having #contentWarnings and #altText encouraged if not required by most instances makes this place leagues more of a safe space for marginalized and/or traumatized people in a way that they cannot experience on mainstream platforms. But this can be very time-consuming and cumbersome, both remembering to add CWs and Alt Text to everything, coming up with custom text every time, and also on the end of it--when you follow enough people (or check out the public timelines) pressing "show content" over and over and over on each post gets REALLY annoying. But again, I'd rather have that tedium then have to subject myself to content that I find really triggering (for me, it's pretty much anything to do with kids and #gunViolence...I live in America where my kids are at risk of getting shot every day they go to school, and while I want to stay informed, I also need some mental prep before I look/read too much about it). And I know for others who have even more triggers, especially around things that the majority of people wouldn't find triggering (like pictures of food), then again, the fediverse is leagues better than the "normal" sites.
But back to searchability, as a veteran Twitter user (I cold-turkey quit in November, don't worry) I am well versed in how dealing with reactionary bullies who can take a tweet out of context and share it with their thousands if not millions of followers to dunk on you all at once. It can also open you up to a lot of haters in general, who will search out content like yours to leave hateful comments (like the comment sections of my Tiktok/Instagram/Youtube posts any time I mention #gunControl ...) BUT, even for content that I WANT people to find--primarily my topless equality content--again, it only shows up if followers of mine boost it to their own followers, and that's a very small niche. The only way we can ever hope to normalize gender-equal topless rights is if there are enough people putting pressure on social media sites and lawmakers to change their policies, and that requires a groundswell of support that's just not possible in isolated communities like Masto currently is. So I would LOVE some more methods for searchability, for people outside of my instance to find my content--and for me to find theirs.
I'm not a programmer, so I don't know how difficult this would be in reality. But the solution seems to me to be creating a searchable index, but making it opt-in only--accoounts like mine can opt-in to be found by people searching for #topless (who thereby might be influenced to think about topless equality, not just searching for porn), while others who want to keep their content protected (maybe searchable among their followers who they already trust, but not to the world wide web) can stay in the default opt-out status until they choose otherwise.
I've seen a few mentions of projects in the works LIKE this, but haven't seen one that's all the way working yet. If there's one that's mostly in working order, please recommend it! I'd love to give it a try.

Today in Labor History May 20, 1949: The U.S. established the National Security Agency. It is now the nation’s largest spy agency. The NSA currently engages in worldwide mass data collection as well as physically bugging targets. They were likely behind the Stuxnet software attack that severely damaged Iran’s nuclear program. The NSA spied on anti-Vietnam War activists and continues to spy on U.S. citizens. Many of their secret surveillance programs were leaked by Edward Snowden, who was forced to flee the country. He is now living in exile in Russia. Private companies, like AT&T and Verizon have collaborated with the NSA to help them spy on U.S. citizens. They supposedly have access to all communications made via Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Yahoo, YouTube, AOL, Skype, Apple and Paltalk.
I’d like to say the good news is that the vast majority of this data is pornography. Problem is, they’re using people’s porn habits to discredit and embarrass them, particularly Muslim clerics and activists. According to a July 2014 report in the Washington Post, 90% of those being surveilled by the NSA are ordinary Americans, not intended targets. But since they’re surveilling every communication made by nearly everyone in the U.S., they’re surveilling pretty much everyone. So, the obvious question is: Why are 10% of all Americans (a full 33 million people) considered targets? And if there really are 33 million of us who are opposed the U.S. government, how come we keep ending up with such shit politicians?

When a #transwoman exceeded the allotted time to give testimony against an anti-trans bill in the #TxLege a young girl blocked staff who attempted to take the mic away.
I've been tracking testimony on a number of bills through live video feed and #Texas citizens routinely go over the allotted time and are given 10, 12 or 15 seconds extra.
This young teen is a shining example of what activism is.

Just because someone has changed doesn't mean they've grown.
An example.
Once, not as long ago as she wants you to believe, Megan #Phelps lived in and worked hard for a cult—the obsessively monstrous #Westboro Baptist Church—where she gleefully shouted anti-gay and anti-Semitic slurs, harming countless of innocent people. Her work contributed to the suicides of unknown numbers of #LGBTQIA+ youth, ultimately leading to the creation of the It Gets Better Campaign to counter their disgusting messages.
Then she had her #redemption arc, about which she wrote a book and was invited to speak at TED.
Now, rather than shill for a genocidal cult, she engages in apologetics for her past behavior, refusing to talk about the harm she's done (and even refusing to believe that she actually did any harm because she was a bad evangelist and couldn't have possibly convinced anyone that she was right), and refusing to take any #accountability for it.
She spends her time lamenting the polarization of the United States population, believing that if we—and by we she means LGBTQIA+ people—are really kind and patient with our #abusers, the #bigots in our lives who do us the most harm, then we can learn from them and find common ground. This was her reason for creating The Witch Trials of J.K. #Rowling, which you may recognize as having a name that paints her, the anti-#trans #bigot, as a victim of trans #activist hate and "cancellation." #Cancellation which J.K. Rowling has literally stated has only made her more money.
So, lots of #change.
Zero #growth.
She's the same selfish person she was then. Except now she leaves God out of the picture, argued on behalf of Donald #Trump's ability to speak his beliefs freely on social media, and offered J.K. Rowling a platform and free PR work by rewriting history multiple times in her shitty little podcast. In her memoir, she uses slurs a lot, but it's cool because she's only talking about her past, not her present. A past that she later describes as having been "fun."
You see, she's the main character of the universe, and so she can only see the world from her perspective—the perspective of a "reformed" bigot. She has no idea what it's like to be the object of that #bigotry and what it does to you. She has no #empathy for the lives she destroyed because she's "changed now." She's "moved on." She hasn't made amends, and she still has criticisms for the LGBTQIA+ community about how we talk to our most privileged attackers. We have to be nicer to them, you see, because that's how she changed.
So much change. So little growth.
Growth means taking #responsibility for your behavior. In the absence of that, any #forgiveness or empathy offered to a bigot only welcomes more #abuse.
We're done doing that.
Bigots' lives objectively do not matter more than the lives of their victims. Bigotry isn't caused by marginalized people, and it's bigots that have to make an effort to change and to grow. Any effort that we make to reach out to them is supererogatory, and they should be fucking grateful that we took that time out of living our best lives to engage with a basilisk in human skin and breathe in their poison in order to tame it.
People who don't want to change won't. People who don't want to grow won't. No matter how much help you offer them, how much empathy, how much compassion, and how much patience, these people will not alter who they've become unless they want to.
And it seems that Megan Phelps has finished changing now. She's found a new sort of #zealotry to attach herself to, a pro-bigot anti-trans cause to fight. And even though she's changed what she believed, her inability to look beyond her own prejudices continue to prevent her from challenging how she thinks about issues and not merely what she thinks.
Change. No growth.
That's very sad, but it's also very common. The stories of "reformed" bigots are few. They're nice, yeah. But usually, these folks' minds are changed by marginalized saints, and most of us are not that. We're human, and when we hurt, we say "ow." But that ow makes people like Megan Phelps feel bad.
I guess it's up to you whether you feel like silencing that ow is worth it to protect the feelings of "reformed" bigots. Me?
I'm gonna shout it louder.

The #TransgenderDistrict of #SanFrancisco, the first legally recognized district of its kind, has lost one of its most well-known residents.
Ivory Nicole Smith, a #black #transwoman and ardent #activist was discovered dead on January 25, 2023.
No details about her death have been revealed by police.
If it's determined she was murdered, it will be at least the fourth killing of #trans and #nonbinary people in the #UnitedStates and at least the fifth worldwide in 2023
