I love the #fediverse

I've always felt sketched out on #corporate #SocialMedia but I don't feel that way on #Mastodon and #Pixelfed

I know my branding is that I'm a #musician and #producer , but I love #technology - I just can't stand how the modern tech industry is based on #ads and #tracking

I get that media companies don't like ad blockers... But can you really blame folks when ABC just forced me to watch a 30 second ad on a 90 second clip?

How to get rid of the giant #ads blocking your favorite #websites
https://www.popsci.com/diy/remove-overlay-ad/

@me @BleepingComputer @mozilla I use @torproject #TorBrowser as default since I'm sick and tired of all the shitty #Tracking and #Ads and just want to browse the #Web.

@me @BleepingComputer yes and I'm still pissed at @mozilla for refusing to actually listen to people like us and actually ask: "Why do you use #Firefox & #Thunderbird and not #Chrome & #Geary?"
Because they'd get to hear #based things like "#privacy" and "#customization" as well as "no shitty #ads" instead.

So instead of plastering shitty ads around, #Mozilla should maybe include more #safety features, harden it more and also add #uBlockOrigin into it.

Haben Sie Ihre ADHS-Diagnose nach dem 17. Lebensjahr erhalten? Dann

@mimsical But the immense complexity of the roadways are a given and they should be a given to #ADS developers and fleets.

System developers and fleets cannot unilaterally change that.

There is no technical value in trying to fix "fault" on any roadway participant (as the #NHTSA does, which is partly why the US #RoadwaySafety record is abysmal).

The obligations of systems developers are to validate their #SafetyCritical system in a selected physical environment - with its warts and all.

Adam Cook

@mimsical Hard to argue with this, **but** I would add something important here.

We should really take out comparisons with "the human" when ultimately talking about validation processes associated with #ADS.

Technical comparisons with other humans is not something that is material to the validation process and, when I see ADS companies talk it up to investors or whomever, it comes off as these companies sort of "hunting" for a vague excuse to water down internal validation processes.

A screenshot from the article linked to in the first Toot in this thread that states:

"There are some scenarios in which an autonomous-driving system can already easily beat a human—just by following the rules. Americans in particular don’t seem to know how to navigate two-lane roundabouts, for instance. Liu and his students know this because they have put sensors on eight intersections in the city of Ann Arbor, including a roundabout near his house.

“It’s the most dangerous roundabout in our county,” says Liu. Despite signs alerting them too, some human drivers entering it make the mistake of not yielding to both lanes of traffic. But an autonomous driving system shouldn’t make the same mistake, he adds."

A new study shows how social media ads can influence brain activity and behavior. The researchers found that seeing ads on social media platforms increased neural responses related to attention, memory and reward. They also found that these responses predicted how likely people were to click on the ads and buy the products.

@mimsical Given the rigorous, should-be regulatory process that I itemized in a list above... we would call this an "Airworthiness Certificate" in the commercial #aerospace industry.

Supports my point that regulators are constantly contorting themselves over some kind of compromised, but passable regulatory process for #ADS, when we already have a ready-made, proven one on the table.

Extremely difficult, despite recent missteps, to argue with the safety record of commercial air travel.

A screenshot from the article linked to in the first Toot which states:

"But with that proof in hand, autonomous vehicles could be granted a sort of driver’s license by safety regulators. Call it the Mad Max driving test, a gantlet only a Hollywood director—or a mild-mannered autonomous-vehicle engineer—could think up."
Adam Cook

@mimsical Again, the #NHTSA is not remotely capable of that because, for decades, the NHTSA has hidden behind a "blame the human" dogma and shallow #NCAP assessments (often known as "five-star vehicle ratings").

Focusing on "the math" (an endpoint) with respect to #ADS safety would therefore be familiar ground for the #NHTSA and I do expect them to embrace it - as this article predicts.

But the unique risk with ADS safety is that "the human" can no longer be readily blamed anymore.

Adam Cook

@mimsical Let me just say that I have never heard a remotely convincing argument yet as to why #ADS cannot be regulated with almost the exact same processes that commercial aircraft are.

That is not necessarily to disagree with this take from #Mobileye, but it is a higher level observation of mine.

No, the #NHTSA is not capable of that type of rigorous oversight (from a skill sets perspective, at the very least), but that fact does not invalidate how the regulatory processes ***should*** be.

A screenshot from the article linked in the first Toot which states:

"These simulated driving hellworlds can also make it possible to do something as important as training an autonomous system—and that’s testing it, says Shai Shalev-Shwartz, the chief technology officer of Mobileye, a company that builds driver-assist and autonomous driving systems.

Mathematically proving that self-driving systems are safer than humans will be critical to getting from a few hundred robotaxis on the road to thousands and eventually millions of self-driving vehicles of every description."

I did alter the source of the website in order to remove images and put passages closer together in order to take better screenshots, but I did not alter the text in the article itself.

A variation of the "me trying to relax" meme with a group of four identical men whispering words of doubt to a man with closed eyes and a serene look on his face.

The text of the men whispering has been replaced by criticism of Mastodon/fediverse:

- it's hard to sustain a company without ads
- there are no clear incentives to run servers
- how is [the fediverse] sustainable without money from advertisers

Below the serene man is a screenshot of my poll:

Something I've not seen mentioned by @atomicpoet and others when talking about #CalcKey is that it supports server administrators displaying you #ads by pushing them into your timeline.

This can apparently be turned of in user settings in CalcKey, and is documented more by the MissKey project (from which CalcKey is forked):

@ReticentTurnip personally, I want more agressive #Adblocker that'll literally filter all #ads on sight to be come the norm so that #advertising - espechally online - can only work to attract stupid SEO-oriented #bots.

A 1915 illustrated ad with showing a child pouring milk on a bowl of cereal that reads:

“Do you know a little house-mother — or a big one — whose appetite is a bit droopy in hot weather?

There's always a refreshing appeal in Kellogg's Toasted Corn Flakes with ripe fruits or berries — a little cold milk poured in at the side of the dish, and sprinkle the berries with powdered sugar — but not the golden flakes. All by themselves they have the coaxingest flavor.

There is a thought here for all of us perhaps — breakfast, luncheon or supper, or before going to bed — better than so much meat these summer days.

And remember, please, you don't know corn flakes unless you know Kellogg's — the original Toasted Corn Flakes — with the pride of the maker to keep the delicate process complete.
