A shallow creek running through the deep bush, in #Blackwood #Victoria #Australia on this fine Spring day.

Ferns and #gumtrees adorned this space for hundreds of square kilometres… thriving in their natural habitat.

Earlier, #kookaburras were heard ringing out amongst the tree tops.

Blue Wrens flitted throughout the trees.

And no other person was around, for miles.

This is kinda Heaven on Earth!

Sound up!!

#Blackwood, #Victoria is home to these gorgeous orange flowering native shrubs.

Found it tough to identify these, therefore if anyone knows what they are, please enlighten us!

They were in abundance… we’re in late Spring here.

The backdrop of gorgeous gums completed the scene.

Just gorgeous!

I’ve seen many in white, too!

Most species are native to eastern Asia and the Himalayan region, but smaller numbers occur elsewhere in Asia, and in North America, Europe and Australia.

Fun fact; there exists, 1,024 different species of Rhododendron 😳🙌

Another suburban #gumtree, featuring its unique trunk patterns, akin to typical army fatigues.

The different colour of bark patches are in fact varying layers that have aged over the months. The lighter shades, obvs, are the newer layers.

This beauty is at least 60 foot tall and has most likely been around for longer than most of us, even though it’s a relatively mid-aged tree, I’d suggest.

Many #gums live in excess of 200 years, I read with interest!

You should see these monumental trees in a bush setting. In numbers, they are breathtaking.

The trusty flora ID App tells me these leaves belong to an #AmericanSweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua), which is native to warm temperate areas of eastern North America and tropical montane regions of Mexico and Central America.

Sweetgums are recognizable by the combination of its five-pointed star-shaped leaves (similar to maple leaves) and its hard, spiked fruits.

This tree is almost bare, however a handful of beautiful leaves still remain. Notice how the setting sun accentuates the rich network of veins throughout each leaf structure?

And their colours are oh so gorgeous, too!

This tree has smooth reddish brown bark at first, later shedding in curling flakes, lance-shaped, sometimes curved adult leaves, club-shaped flower buds covered with a waxy, bluish white bloom, pink stamens with yellow anthers and urn-shaped fruit.

These flowers are vibrant red and have a hairlike structure about the size of a 50 cent piece, 50 pence or a little larger than a quarter coin. This size makes up each individual flowering fruit.

More busy #bees collecting nectar on these beautiful #Camellia and #scarletbottlebrush in #Melbourne #Australia.

Bees are so industrious and gentle creatures.

#bee facts;

There are over 1500 different species of native #Australian bees

Some bees are as tiny as 2mm with the largest being around 24mm.

It is thought that a honeybee produces just one half of a teaspoon of honey throughout its entire working life.

In just a single day a queen bee can lay 3000 eggs.

There are on average around 55,000 worker bees in a bee colony.

A honey bee’s wings flap 11,400 times a minute, which creates the bee buzz - as in, how is this even remotely possible!!! 🤔😮

A queen bee lives for up to two years.

A worker bee lives around 45 days during summer, and less in winter.

All worker bees are females, the only male bees are the drones.

It is a part of the family Garryaceae, native to the coastal ranges of California and southern Oregon.

It is an erect, bushy, evergreen shrub reaching a height of 2–5 m (7–16 ft).

This one is large and the masses of draping flowers are just beautiful, don’t you think?

This warehouse office space has been transformed by the talented and may I say accomplished artist Melanie Caple, with a stunning mural, including #flora and #birdlife.

This beauty measures 12 x 6.5 metres in size and is just amazing!

Melanie says in her Insta post; “I used colour and composition to enhance this warehouse office space.

It was a pleasure creating this mural… featuring #botanicals and #bird life of the [#Victorian] south eastern coast”.

Well, from us here from ‘The Streets of Melbourne’, we’re glad you created this masterpiece, too!!

These #Camellia are a little smaller than the many larger flowering heads that are blooming at the moment throughout #melbourne.

But are no less impressive.

#daffodil in winter here in #melbourne are most definitely cheering up the landscape!

It’s botanic name is #NarcissusTazetta and many varieties and colours are popping up in many suburbs here atm.

Mostly observed are yellow, but these cream/yellow variety are growing with vigour in #ormond #Australia on a roadside verge.

They spout and grow from a bulb and hang about for anywhere between 6 weeks to 6 months, depending on conditions, location, soil etc I read with interest.

Interesting facts;

There are at least 25 different daffodil species and up to 13,000 hybrids.

They're the official 10th wedding anniversary flower.

Daffodils contain sap that's often poisonous to other plants.

#BanksiaEricifolia, the heath-leaved banksia, or lantern banksia, is a woody shrub native to Australia.

It grows in two separate regions of Central and Northern New South Wales east of the Great Dividing Range.

Well known for its orange or red inflorescences, which contrast with its green fine-leaved heath-like foliage, it is a medium to large shrub that can reach 6 m (20 ft) high and wide, though is usually half that size, like this one.

It normally ‘flowers’ in autumn but this is stretching on (does so in cooler areas) into mid winter, here in Melbs.

The grey-coloured bark of this tree is smooth and fairly thin. The dark green leaves are small and narrow, 9–20 mm (1⁄4–3⁄4 in) long and up to 1 mm wide, generally with two small teeth at the tips.

The inflorescences are flower spikes 7–22 cm (2.8–8.7 in) high and 5 cm (2.0 in) broad or so. The main body is kinda tubular. The spikes are say 20 - 30cm (2/4 - 1) long, hundreds of them. Deep orange in colour.

More bush / forrest pics from #Fernshaw, #YarraRangersNationalPark in #victoria #Australia.

The #Gumtree’s and #Ferns here, are epic… densely populated and happy and healthy.

The tall gums provide the perfect shade canopy for the ground dwelling ferns, which thrive all year round.

This day (pictured) ranged from 3 - 9 degrees Celsius (37 - 48 F), depending on the altitude.

Surprisingly, even during mid-winter, small bright green fern fronds (called ‘fiddleheads’) were in the early process of unrolling on a number of these plants.

#BanksiaPraemorsa, commonly known as the cut-leaf banksia, is a species of shrub or tree; it’s a #Banksia.

The bark is rough and flaky. Flowering occurs from now, through to November. The flower spikes arise from the ends of small lateral branches up to 27 cm (11 in) high, they are composed of hundreds of individual ‘flowers’ growing out of a vertical woody spike.

I just love this mural. I’ve posted some time ago, but can’t get enough of it

Found it again in my travels recently.

The #rosella is astonishingly good. So too the #wombat to the right of scene in the second pic.

Painted by HaydenDewar.com in 2019, this scene complements another painted on brick, just off Acland Street in StKilda. It has the same humanoid figures and #Australiana themes.

I’ll visit that and feature it here, sometime in the not too distant future.

This mural (pictured in this post) however, is located in #Bentleigh #Australia.

Gorgeous, and intriguing huh?

This scene takes in a portion of a larger mural (around 20 metres wide) on a brick wall. This section of the scene is around 4 metres wide by 4 metres high, with a vibrant rosella mid flight, tilted slightly flying from left to right, zooming through the air.

The bird is looking at the observer (the camera) almost with human intelligence in its eye. Has various blue coloured wings, spread wide and individual / distinct feathers showing. Great painted detail. Very detailed.

Its back and body is adorned with red and a bit of black individual feathers and it’s head is red, darker blue chin, grey curved beak and black eye.

It’s a side shot and the bird almost has what appears to be a grin… most certainly has a cheeky look in its eye.

Riding on its back (closer to its neck) is a slim and slender humanoid woman (has breasts) in a teal
Coloured skin suit.

The woman has flowing blonde hair, flowing in the wind, but no face. It looks like a light brown (perhaps skin tone) disc, for a face.

It is a real fun scene.

Meet a scary looking critter, the #orbspider, but she’s pretty harmless all the same.

This is a female. They’re the big ones! Males are way-smaller in size.

I saw a heap of these (nearly walked into this one’s web) a week ago, along the #LoddonRiver in #Bendigo #australia.

Australian golden orb weaver:

Found in Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Australia, northern New Zealand, and New Caledonia.

The female typically grows to around 40mm (1.5 inch), whereas males only reach around 7-10mm (quarter to a third of an inch) in length.

It’s web is normally over 1 metre in diameter. Once built, it never leaves its web.

They’re harmless and not poisonous to humans.

Its main predators are birds and parasitic wasps.

Breeds throughout late summer and spring, and produces an average of 380 eggs.

The tiny males tie down the much larger females before mating, weaving silk threads over their abdomens.

Sexual cannibalism is rare with this species, however up to 50% of males are cannibalised throughout the natural course of life, as ‘prey’.

They’re an edible spider and are considered a delicacy in New Guinea. They’re plucked by the legs from their webs and lightly roasted over an open fire. Ummm, no thanks 😳

A lanky legged spider sitting in a thick spider web in wait. It sits, head pointing to the ground, pictured from above.

The web is thick and is almost luminescent in places where the sun hits its surface. I’m over 6 foot tall and the web surface was from waist to head height, with a network of web threads splaying out in all directions as the-downs, down to knee-high connected to dry grass on the ground, whilst connected to the to the lower parts of the tree tops (Gumtree’s) about 2.5 metres (8 foot) high.

This female has a large body size; around 5 centimetres from end to end of it’s splayed out legs and it’s black from first observations but has an intricate network of different shades of greys over its back surface. Some patches near it’s head appears silver. The main bulbous body is as large as my thumb nail.

It’s legs are hairy, short hairs. Grey-white in colour closer to its body and lengths of browns and dark grey to black, the rest of the leg length.

It’s head is about 1/4 the size of its body and is silver in appearance with half a dozen black patches. At the front of it face you can see two short, thin feelers, I think they’re called. Maybe pincers not sure.

The background consists of blurred vision of a gumtree trunk, branches, leaves and powder blue skies.

Another spider, a tiny male; I suspect around 1/4 inch in size shares the web, above this giant huntress!

Was directed to this work-in-progress by a fellow #VisualHedonist around the corner, as we were both taking pictures of a recent mural in #Mckinnon #Australia, lunchtime today.

And OMG, glad I went to have a sticky-beak!!

Such #feminine elegance forming here. Accompanied by leaves, perhaps some roses and plenty of #fem #love!!

I’d suggest this gorgeous piece is about halfway complete and the detail (face, neck, arms, fingers, surrounding scene etc) will take the longest to complete; will be painstaking. Just guessing.

I can see this coming along beautifully, with shading and more depth to come. This will look absolutely breathtaking once complete.

The Melbourne artist (Juzpop) on a small ladder, poised to place brush to the wall, one third up from the ground.

Painting is partially complete; I’d suggest half-way done, with the basic layers applied on a brick wall about 20 metres in length and 7-8 metres high. This building is an eye sore, an old brown brick telephone exchange building, I know it well.

The main feature of this creation is a young woman’s face, most likely mid-twenties, pretty, tanned complexion, black hair and red lipstick (face is not complete), with her hands framing her face, blue fingernail polish on right hand (left not yet complete). Her face is surrounded by a sea of blues, purples, reds, pinks and subtle oranges which are to become leaves and foliage of some sort… perhaps in bright and dynamic, typical autumn colours going by the aesthetics thus far! Also roses or some other flower forms are in the making too. I can see this coming along nicely, with shading and more depth and detail to come. This will look absolutely breathtaking once complete. Just wow.

Be well beautiful girl.

You’re not too far from here, only a dimension or two away.

The ID app tells me this is yet another #Hibiscus in bloom!

#HibiscusMutabilis, also known as the Confederate rose, Dixie rosemallow, cotton rose or cotton rosemallow, is usually a plant grown for its showy flowers. And I can see why!!

Originally native to southern China, it is now found on all continents except Antarctica.

#Melburnians are being treated to a visual feast atm, as they grow sensationally here in suburban Victoria!

This one was photographed in #ashburton #Australia.

This is awesome.

There’s a similar mural set in #bentleigh (same artist for sure, not signed), but these in #stkilda #australia, just off Acland Street are something else.

The detail of the bat’s features are gorgeous.

Aren’t #marigold’s just a cheer inducing flower?

They’re simple, abundant and generous in their display.

They always help uplift the mood. So giving.

Honestly, #bougainvillea is the gift that keeps on giving!

It’s still flowering throughout Melbs and it seems it has plenty of bloom-time remaining.

I’ve seen pinks, purples and reds of late.

This one I wanted to show some close ups of, to illustrate the beauty that is… I present the one and only, Bougainvillea….

<standing ovation, please 👏👏>

#lantana are still flowering so well…

I met Claire, the homeowner of this wonderful garden - she was out watering a couple of weeks ago!

Enjoy!!
