Uganda's President Museveni approves tough new anti-gay law

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-65745850

Uganda was a part of the British Empire from 1894 until 1962. No doubt before us Brits took over, all kinds of things were accepted.

This sort of law is a hangover from when Brits imposed their pious ways in the Victorian era.

"There Was a Country" by Chinua Achebe. If you're interested in African #history but not just the general summary in the history books, then this is my huge recommendation for you.

About the Biafran war, and written by a novelist who got deeply mixed up in the conflict himself, there is hardly a better opportunity to learn about a terrible conflict that most of our 2023 world knows nothing about.

The audible narration in this one is excellent btw 👍

Thursday was the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Organization of African Unity (now the African Union). Happy 60th!🎂

Founded in 1963 by African leaders keen on pushing out European colonial powers and securing independence for African territories, it played a role in ending colonization and apartheid rule in South Africa. It remains headquartered out of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the only African state to militarily fend off European colonizers and preserve its independence.

Cults of personality surrounding a head of state invariably require the systemic erosion of independent governance institutions. Thus, the best antidote to them is to strengthen democratic institutions that check executive power, especially term limits.

International partners sometimes support longtime leaders for the sake of “stability", but prolonged rule is actually linked to higher levels of instability.

In recognition of #AfricaDay, here are a few of my memorable African reads:

Things Fall Apart
Who Fears Death
Stay With Me by A. Adebayo
Africanfuturism: An Anthology ed. Wole Talabi

In the photo is a spoon with kola nut, which is native to West Africa. We call it “bissy” in Jamaica. It saved my life when I was a teenager.

Gratitude to my Grandmother land (credit to Manbo Jessyka Winston for the term)! I salute you from Jamaica, my Motherland.

#Africa
#AfricanLiterature
#BlackMastodon

A flatlay on a light-brown, wooden surface of Who Fears Death by Nnedi Okorafor in the centre between a partially visible glass mug with yellow and red flowers lying on one side in the top left-hand corner, and a spoon with loose kola nut (aka bissy in Jamaica) on a white, lace-edged, paper doily in the lower right-hand corner. Some of the bissy is scattered on the doily.

The book cover design features the image of a young, barefoot Black woman gazing at a red, desert landscape with mustard-coloured hills in the distance. Her thick dreadlocks are in a ponytail, and she’s wearing a thin, dark-grey wrap dress and a six-ringed armlet on her left arm. Her exposed back is to the viewer, and the shadow-like wings of a vulture hover in front of her as if they’re a part of her body. A white-hot sun blazes above her head, so close that it seems she could touch it. Knowing what the protagonist's powers are like, she probably could!

In Yoruba folklore, the Tortoise, who is called Àjàpá, Ìjàpá, & Alájàpá, is depicted as a trickster whose popularity equals Anansi’s. The Yoruba esteem his cunning, “which makes up for his physical disadvantages”, as celebrated in the proverb “Àjàpá ò lẹ́sẹ̀ ńlẹ̀, ó lọ́gbọ́n ńnú (Àjàpá’s feet make hardly an impression on the ground, but he is all wisdom inside).”
