Young Maasai giraffes, also known as calves, have an interesting fact about their growth rate. During their first year of life, they can grow up to an astonishing 1 inch (2.54 cm) per day, resulting in a rapid increase in their height. This fast growth rate allows them to better evade predators and reach the tall vegetation their species is known for consuming.

#TIL I should remember to clear the whiteboard between students.

Had my youngest student today question what the term 'pseudo-penis' was.

Told them it was above their pay grade and was able to distract them with the trumpets I had brought for today's double lesson.

Now officially Tryggve (Marley) is also gone, killed by the same nomads who took away Snyggve (Bob Jr). Unfortunate to see the great brother are gone, but their legacy remains.

Baby elephants stay very close to their mothers for the first couple of months. The calves drink their mother's milk for about two years, sometimes longer. They drink up to 3 gallons of milk a day!

When we think about carbon sequestration, we too often stop at trees and other plants. They're the ones doing most of the drawing down of carbon, sure, but it's often animals that structure and maintain plant communities to allow it to happen.

This story by Malavika Vyawahare in @mongabay is a great example, showing how forest elephants help big trees thrive by taking out smaller competitors: https://news.mongabay.com/2023/01/elephants-promote-jumbo-trees-boosting-the-carbon-stores-in-africas-forests/

New bat species just dropped. Well, not new-new.

Pseudoromicia principis was first described as a separate species this week, based on specimens collected from Príncipe Island, west of Equitorial Guinea, more than 30 years ago.
