These agaves I received bare-root and only got them rooted in late spring. They did well over the summer, adding lots of new leaves and only getting a little bit singed by the sun.

I nearly killed this Agave victoriae-reginae (笹の雪) because I got it bare-root in the winter and I didn’t know I had to do anything special to get it to root.
Now it’s rooted and taking in water, so I guess it’s made a full recovery 🎉

We came across this recently bloomed agave plant in silhouette one evening at sunset. The agave is aka the century plant because they only bloom once in their life. The bloom typically lasts 3-4 months after which the plant goes to agave heaven. Do not fear though … it leaves behind a clone of itself as seeds to grow and bloom again.

Life on Symi is always surprising. At 03.00 last Saturday, just as I was heading for bed, I heard a strange crashing sound outside. I took a torch and discovered that the stalk of the soon-to-flower Agave americana at the bottom of the Vigla (mountain as 'look out') had crashed into the courtyard and roof. Fortunately it appears not to have caused any structural damage to the house despite the size and length of the stalk.
