#LachenaliaAloides (opal flower) is a species of flowering plant native to the Western Cape of South Africa.

Such a welcomed addition to the flowering landscape that is starting to appear here in Melbs, a little ahead of time, if I may say.

These are simply divine!

This opal flower has around three dozen blooms. Is ground dwelling, standing around 45cm high and spaying out half a metre in diameter.

It has bright green strap-shaped spotted leaves and stems, which sprout pendent tubular yellow flowers, hanging elegantly, mainly yellow, and red at the tips.

#BanksiaEricifolia, the heath-leaved banksia, or lantern banksia, is a woody shrub native to Australia.

It grows in two separate regions of Central and Northern New South Wales east of the Great Dividing Range.

Well known for its orange or red inflorescences, which contrast with its green fine-leaved heath-like foliage, it is a medium to large shrub that can reach 6 m (20 ft) high and wide, though is usually half that size, like this one.

It normally ‘flowers’ in autumn but this is stretching on (does so in cooler areas) into mid winter, here in Melbs.

The grey-coloured bark of this tree is smooth and fairly thin. The dark green leaves are small and narrow, 9–20 mm (1⁄4–3⁄4 in) long and up to 1 mm wide, generally with two small teeth at the tips.

The inflorescences are flower spikes 7–22 cm (2.8–8.7 in) high and 5 cm (2.0 in) broad or so. The main body is kinda tubular. The spikes are say 20 - 30cm (2/4 - 1) long, hundreds of them. Deep orange in colour.

#BanksiaPraemorsa, commonly known as the cut-leaf banksia, is a species of shrub or tree; it’s a #Banksia.

It occurs in a few isolated populations on the south coast of Western Australia.

Grows well here in #Melbs and they’re displaying in abundance in gardens throughout our grand city atm, during mid-winter!

The woody spiked head is a greeny -yellow colour, on this one anyways.

Many I’ve noticed present in various colours; some rustic brown, others a deep red too. Just beautiful.

The detail of the rough, woody florettes are astounding.

Banksia praemorsa grows as a shrub to 4 m (13 foot) with a relatively thick sturdy trunk that branches quite close to the ground.

The bark is rough and flaky. Flowering occurs from now, through to November. The flower spikes arise from the ends of small lateral branches up to 27 cm (11 in) high, they are composed of hundreds of individual ‘flowers’ growing out of a vertical woody spike.

The woody spiked head is a greeny -yellow colour, on this one anyways.

The #RedWattlebird (Anthochaera carunculata) is a bird native to southern Australia.

It is the second largest species of Australian #honeyeater.

This beauty was so trusting. It was intently focussed on this discarded sweet on the footpath, pecking away and checking on me periodically as I photographed from only a few feet away.

The sexes are similar in plumage. And I read with interest that juveniles have less prominent wattles (1 cm or 1/2 inch long fleshy growths) on either side of their neck and browner eyes.

It’s known as #AeoniumArboreum, aka the tree aeonium, tree houseleek, or Irish rose.

These plants are normally not so impressive in garden settings, imo, but seeing these bright yellow conical blooms has raised my estimation of these beauties… no end!

I read with note, that these are an invasive weed in places outside its natural distribution. And from my observations over the years, they’re hearty (relatively drought resistant) and their longevity is epic.

#LigustrumJaponicum, known as #JapanesePrivet is a species of Ligustrum (privet) native to central and southern Japan.

The berries look good enough to eat, but I wouldn’t dare! Saying that, the fruits have been used in traditional medicinal practices and supplements in Korea and Japan.

I read with interest, that because of its extensive root system (grows prolifically when young), it can become evasive and grow and spread in numbers, competing with / eliminating other native shrubs and plants.

Each leaf has I believe five to six individual fingers (portions), medium sized growths, spanning outward from the middle part, that end at a point at the tip. Each leaf is around 100 millimetres (4 inches in diameter).

The general colour of the leaves range between yellow, a handful display in light green, burnt orange and light red. They appear bright as the morning sun is shining from the back of the photographer and onto the leaf surface. They’re truly gorgeous.

I just love this mural. I’ve posted some time ago, but can’t get enough of it

Found it again in my travels recently.

The #rosella is astonishingly good. So too the #wombat to the right of scene in the second pic.

Painted by HaydenDewar.com in 2019, this scene complements another painted on brick, just off Acland Street in StKilda. It has the same humanoid figures and #Australiana themes.

I’ll visit that and feature it here, sometime in the not too distant future.

This mural (pictured in this post) however, is located in #Bentleigh #Australia.

Gorgeous, and intriguing huh?

This scene takes in a portion of a larger mural (around 20 metres wide) on a brick wall. This section of the scene is around 4 metres wide by 4 metres high, with a vibrant rosella mid flight, tilted slightly flying from left to right, zooming through the air.

The bird is looking at the observer (the camera) almost with human intelligence in its eye. Has various blue coloured wings, spread wide and individual / distinct feathers showing. Great painted detail. Very detailed.

Its back and body is adorned with red and a bit of black individual feathers and it’s head is red, darker blue chin, grey curved beak and black eye.

It’s a side shot and the bird almost has what appears to be a grin… most certainly has a cheeky look in its eye.

Riding on its back (closer to its neck) is a slim and slender humanoid woman (has breasts) in a teal
Coloured skin suit.

The woman has flowing blonde hair, flowing in the wind, but no face. It looks like a light brown (perhaps skin tone) disc, for a face.

It is a real fun scene.

These flowering bushes in this close-up shot show a few long stems that are displayed horizontally. Each stem is around 20 centimetres long and covered with fine spikey hair-like structures, dozens of them. Maybe a hundred or more.

The spikes are coloured white (each about 2 cm in length around the branch’s circumference) and closer to the stalk or branch, which is hidden (the branch), because there is a 1 centimetre growth in diameter around the branch of pretty dark pink flowering material. It is quite a unique looking flowering mass.

A few small green leaves about the size of a pinky fingernail, protrude out from the branch also.

At the base of the plant are a greater amount of light green leaves about 5 cm in length. A modest size.

The plant bush is around 1.8 metres tall and spays out around two metres in circumference.

Not shown in this shot, but bees were everywhere on this bush, as there were about a half dozen separate shrubs growing in this garden. I observed half a dozen bees on a single flowering stem at one stage.

These flowers are quite large. I’d estimate around 5 to 8 centimetres (2 to 3 in) in diameter and has two slightly overlapping upper petals, two side petals, and a single bottom petal with a slight (small) beard looking growth from the flower's center.

These petals are purplish; moreso light violet, with a deep purple centre that bleeds into white then into the violet, which covers most of the petal.

This image shows droplets of water on the petals, also some fine soil here and there too, where heavy rains has splashed pinhead sized pieces from the ground, to land on some surfaces of the petals.

The plant is between 20 - 25 centimetres (9 in) in height with varying sized, matt green leaves.

I’ve recently discovered a deck of ‘Flower Magic Oracle Cards’ which feature flowers and their meanings (with a rhyme and additional, insightful information), as interpreted by the authors, for each flower.

There are 48 flowers beautifully printed on a gilded card, for each.

These are awesome. I’ve been taking a sticky-beak and thought I’d share my thoughts, given the love of #flora is so prevalent here at #Masto.

Sooo, today I’m going to feature the #Clematis, which, in this deck signifies #motivation.

Here is a summary of the symbolism, with a rhyme for this card… it’s real powerful stuff!

🙌💖🌸

Clematis - #Intuition;

You just need a little push or shove,
perhaps some motivation from above.

Get up, get out, don’t procrastinate,
the time is now, don’t leave it too late.

Respond to the crack of the whip, don’t delay.

While the sun is shining, get out, make hay.

Clematis Revealed;

Depending on the variety, some of the common names found include ‘traveller’s joy’, ‘virgin’s bower’, ‘leather flower’, ‘vase vine’ and ‘old man’s beard’.

The name is from ancient Greek and
translates literally as ‘climbing or vine-like plant’. In Victorian flower language, clematis represents art, mental beauty and poverty.

Pictured is a divination card, bordered in black. in portrait around 150mm (6 inch) by 100mm (4 inch). Out of shot we would see curved-card edges and shiny gold-foiled gilded edging.

The card has one major section, displayed in light green and black etching; the main feature a large circle, with small top views of shrubs on top and viney-leaves on the bottom section of the circle.

Bottom right pictures an expressionless middle-aged woman with long flowing blonde hair, wearing some kind of stout bowler hat, thick black glasses and a dark skull pendant hanging from her neck. Adorned with a dark long-sleeve top and a purple-blue type of corset. Wearing deep purple lipstick. Looks almost gothic.

Within the circle, a bunch of bright clematis flowers are displayed.
They have pinky-purple petals; I’d suggest most would say this flower is pink. They’re flanked by dozens of light and dark shiny broad leaves, of differing sizes.

The main (larger) flower is a star-like bloom with elongated pink petals; eight in total. It’s most likely around 4-5 inches (100 -125mm) in diameter.

Each petal is a slender, long structure with streaks of white. Each petal is edged in shimmering white, bleeding into the main pink colour.

The centre of the flower shows an abundance of hairy filaments; a mixture of white and yellow, with the centre most part (pistil), coloured pink.

The bottom reads in white capitals; CLEMATIS and underneath is typed; ‘Motivation’, in pink text.

This flower is a dark and rich red colour, with 5 petals that are full and healthy looking. Each of these flowers on this shrub is around 5-6cm (2-2.5 inch) in diameter.

Each petal is broadly formed at the base and taper slightly to a blunt, rounded point at each tip. These petals are the consistency of rose petal but just a little thinner I’d suggest.

Has two long red, wispy stamen.

One aspect that is stunning in this flowering head is that the most top petal and the two adjoining it (unlike the rest) contains darker red patterning, quite intricate, and looks like tiny leopard markings. This pattern covers only a small portion of those adjoining petals.

Oh, the edges of each petal has around a 1-2 millimetre (1/32 inch) outline of white that bleeds from the predominant red petal colour. Looks stunning. Looks like the edges are shimmering.

This mural is displayed in the #eastend #theatredistrict of #melbourne #Australia.

Spotted in an alleyway painted on the rear of an old industrial building, a woman, shoulders up, looks down over her shoulder, flanked by long, whispy bird feathers of some type around her figure.

The painting is around 60-70 foot (15-20 metres) tall in its entirety.

Long jet black hair, full lips and alluring eyes, this scene says so much. It could be described as sexually charged. Depending on your interpretation. Her look could almost be described too, as contemptuous or accusing. Again, depending on the observer.

The building is old and rustic, concrete cladded and the setting looks like a grungy back alley that was probably in its hay day in the early 20th century Melbourne. It stands at around 5-6 stories tall and is and is adorned on the periphery with air vents, plumbing pipes and guttering down pipes.

Such a healthy looking #TecomaCapensis, aka the Cape honeysuckle; its home is in Southern Africa.

I’ve seen these flowering at various times throughout this year already… but not like this. This one is oh-so healthy.

Just check out the shiny, modest-sized leaves… deep green in appearance.

This beautiful specimen is well hydrated, despite this flowering cycle ending shortly.

🙌🧡

These flowers are tubular, narrow, about 7.5 cm (3 in) long. Given they’re late in their bloom, these ones generally look a little wilted. They are grouped in 10–15 cm (4–6 in) long clusters. The flower colour ranges from orange to orange-red to apricot. But these are most definitely vibrant orange. This shrub has shiny small leaves, all sizes say, of a typical female fingernail. Deep green in colour. This entire shrub stands at around 6 foot (180 cm) in height.

Located in the centre of the #cbd (central business district) of #Melbourne #Australia is this mural, depicting a single tree with a halo around it, on brick, adjoining a Carpark in this concrete jungle.

The generic message is clear, I think.

But for me, this powerful scene says nature, trees and life are all so very sacred. And must be revered and preserved for all time.

No matter the cost… or human ‘progress’.

A picture of a densely light and dark shaded and heavily leafed growth (tree).

It sits upon a gnarled trunk and branches of light and dark brown.

The tree is rooted on top of a flat pointed hill that is adorned with lush light-green grass.

The scene is painted on a grey painted brick building wall. The wall sits adjacent to a car park that is empty (picture was taken on a weekend, so there’s an acre or more black bitumen out of shot, free from parked vehicles, that sits below this mural). The wall itself is huge - around 50-60 metres (150 feet) wide and 25-30 metres (80 feet) high.

The striking thing about this scene is the bright yellow halo that surrounds the outtermost part of the tree.

I believe it signifies the sacred nature of this beautiful tree and everything ‘nature’ itself.

Good quality painting and relatively new I think. Very special indeed.

Throughout Melbs right now, #azelea’s are out in bloom and they’re everywhere!

They produce such gorgeous flowers… so many different varieties and colours. And their patterning is something else.

A truly special and visually pleasing plant.

Did you know? 🤔

Most azaleas are poisonous.

They contain #Grayanotoxins, which are a group of closely related neurotoxins.

Grayanotoxins are produced by #Rhododendron species and other plants in the family #Ericaceae.

Such beautiful flowers are azaleas. I’ll attempt to describe one to my best ability.

Leaves; It’s leaves are sturdy, thick and glossy green, with a veiny network. Various sizes but the largest is around 5 cm (2 inch) in length and 2-2.5 cm (just over an inch) wide. So appealing and healthy on this one.

Flower; This flower is a light shade of pink in colour, with between 5 to 6 petals that are fully formed at the base and taper slightly to a blunt point at each tip. The petal itself looks delicate, with what I describe as a flowy and giving surface as they tend to flap and sway in rigorous winds but are sturdy and strong all the same. Kind of like the consistency of a thinner rose petal.

Only has two long, whispy stamen - one white / pink ad the other is a darker pink.

One aspect that is stunning in this flowering head is that the most top petal and the two either side of it (unlike the rest) contains a darker bright pink patterning, akin to leopard markings. So fine and yet covers half of this top petal. And this patterning covers only a small portion of the adjoining petals. It’s as if it has been stencilled on and spray painted in these unique and beautiful patterns. Quite stunning.

Meet a beautiful-blooming #CamelliaSasanqua!!

It’s most common name is sasanqua #camellia and this species of Camellia is native to China and Japan.

Most species of camellias require a large amount of water, so with the steady rainfall of late (and relative mild summer) it’s no wonder these are blooming in abundance.

Did you know? 🤔

There are over 250 known species to the genus Camellia 🤯

How gorgeous is this mural of various #wren’s on brick; #Windsor #Australia.

It appears outside a cafe, near the #WindsorTrainStation.

The #bird on the top right has a #rainbow heart on its breast and signifies to me, the gentle nature of such a beautiful creature.

And of course the undeniable message of acceptance, freedom and love.

It’s brown, grey feathers are fluffy with a long thin tail pointing downward, standing sidewards but looking straight at the ‘observer’.

Background is grey. With a white hue (like an aura) around the birds entire body.

On its breast, appears subtle colours of the rainbow, shaped as a love-heart.

Meet a scary looking critter, the #orbspider, but she’s pretty harmless all the same.

This is a female. They’re the big ones! Males are way-smaller in size.

I saw a heap of these (nearly walked into this one’s web) a week ago, along the #LoddonRiver in #Bendigo #australia.

Australian golden orb weaver:

Found in Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Australia, northern New Zealand, and New Caledonia.

The female typically grows to around 40mm (1.5 inch), whereas males only reach around 7-10mm (quarter to a third of an inch) in length.

It’s web is normally over 1 metre in diameter. Once built, it never leaves its web.

They’re harmless and not poisonous to humans.

Its main predators are birds and parasitic wasps.

Breeds throughout late summer and spring, and produces an average of 380 eggs.

The tiny males tie down the much larger females before mating, weaving silk threads over their abdomens.

Sexual cannibalism is rare with this species, however up to 50% of males are cannibalised throughout the natural course of life, as ‘prey’.

They’re an edible spider and are considered a delicacy in New Guinea. They’re plucked by the legs from their webs and lightly roasted over an open fire. Ummm, no thanks 😳

A lanky legged spider sitting in a thick spider web in wait. It sits, head pointing to the ground, pictured from above.

The web is thick and is almost luminescent in places where the sun hits its surface. I’m over 6 foot tall and the web surface was from waist to head height, with a network of web threads splaying out in all directions as the-downs, down to knee-high connected to dry grass on the ground, whilst connected to the to the lower parts of the tree tops (Gumtree’s) about 2.5 metres (8 foot) high.

This female has a large body size; around 5 centimetres from end to end of it’s splayed out legs and it’s black from first observations but has an intricate network of different shades of greys over its back surface. Some patches near it’s head appears silver. The main bulbous body is as large as my thumb nail.

It’s legs are hairy, short hairs. Grey-white in colour closer to its body and lengths of browns and dark grey to black, the rest of the leg length.

It’s head is about 1/4 the size of its body and is silver in appearance with half a dozen black patches. At the front of it face you can see two short, thin feelers, I think they’re called. Maybe pincers not sure.

The background consists of blurred vision of a gumtree trunk, branches, leaves and powder blue skies.

Another spider, a tiny male; I suspect around 1/4 inch in size shares the web, above this giant huntress!

OMG!

It’s #camellia season!

#CamelliaSasanqua is a species of Camellia native to China and Japan.

The flowers are 5–7 cm diameter, with 5–8 white to dark pink petals. These petals are bright pink with vibrant hair-like filaments (a couple of dozen per flower) and anthers that resemble pin heads. Was directed to this work-in-progress by a fellow #VisualHedonist… in #Mckinnon #Australia, lunchtime today.

And OMG, glad I went to have a sticky-beak!!

Such #feminine elegance forming here. Accompanied, I think, by leaves; perhaps some roses and plenty of #fem #love!!

I’d suggest this gorgeous piece is about halfway complete and the detail (face, neck, arms, fingers, surrounding scene etc) will take the longest to complete; will be painstaking. Just guessing.

I can see this coming along beautifully, with shading and more depth to come. This will look absolutely breathtaking once complete.

Justine, the creator of this emerging masterpiece took a little time out to chat. This accomplished artist is a marvel to speak to and you can see why she’s an absolute angel who paints from the heart. Just wow and… gosh!

The Melbourne artist (Juzpop) on a small ladder, poised to place brush to the wall, one third up from the ground.

Painting is partially complete; I’d suggest half-way done, with the basic layers applied on a brick wall about 20-25 metres in length and 7-8 metres high. This building is an eye sore, an old brown brick telephone exchange building, I know it well.

The main feature of this creation is a young woman’s face, looking confident, determined and empowered, although a touch of softness and vulnerability too (my interpretation)… most likely early to mid-twenties, pretty, tanned complexion, black hair and red lips (face is not complete), with her hands framing her face, blue fingernail polish on right hand (left not yet complete).

Her face is surrounded by a sea of vibrant blues, purples, reds, pinks and subtle oranges which are to become leaves and foliage of some sort amongst other things I think… perhaps in bright and dynamic, autumn colours going by the aesthetics thus far! Also roses or some other flower forms are perhaps in the making too.

I can see this coming along nicely, with shading and more depth and detail to come. This will look absolutely breathtaking once complete. Feminine beauty and strength at its finest. Just wow.

Two cockies - large white birds with a pronounced grey beak and yellow comb on top of their heads, sitting in a gum tree. It’s a mural so it’s rustic. One cockatoo is left of picture, wings wide open, standing on a branch. Below this is a real-life, old style bus (front-on) parked in the Carpark where this mural is displayed. On the top of the bus’ display board is the name ‘Bianca’. The other cocky is on the right of shot and it is coming into land, wings outstretched majestically. The major aspect of this scene is a huge gum tree with branches outstretched with beautiful gum leaves. Background through the tree you can see the odd kangaroo, more cockies and birds, green grasslands and blue skies.

#Warburton is beautiful this time of year.

This is a pic of a public garden aligning the #YarraRiver on a cool #autumn day.

Cloudy, overcast and around 15 degree’s C (60F). Pretty cold, but I’m welcoming the change of season with open arms given the obvious ‘visual’ spoils on offer!

This fine lookin’ fella was in #Burwood #Australia, sitting in a #redfloweringgum.

He and his cheeky rainbow lorikeet mate were having fun in the branches. His mate is in pic 3.

They’re gorgeous birds… and smart.

This one was cheeky; he knew he was being marvelled at and stuck around to be adored and worshipped!

The #rainbow #lorikeet (Trichoglossus moluccanus);

Is a species of parrot found in Australia.

Are common along the eastern seaboard, from northern Queensland to South Australia.

Habitat is rainforest, coastal bush and woodland areas.

Have been introduced to Perth, Western Australia, Tasmania, Auckland, New Zealand, and Hong Kong.

There is little to visually distinguish between the sexes.

The plumage is very bright and colorful. The head is deep blue with a greenish-yellow collar, and the rest of the upper parts (wings, back and tail) are green. The chest is orange/yellow. The belly is deep blue, and the thighs and rump are green. In flight a yellow wing-bar contrasts clearly with the red underwing coverts. They’re truly beautiful.

#Brazil is home to the #PleromaUrvilleanum, the gorgeous thing you’re admiring right now!

It grows anywhere between 3 - 6 metres (10–20 ft) tall by 2 – 3 m (7–10 ft) wide and is a sprawling evergreen shrub.

This one has veined, dark green hairy leaves.

Clusters of brilliant purple flowers (with black stamens), up to 10 cm (4 in) in diameter are just starting to bloom again I suspect, because they flower throughout summer and autumn here in Oz.

There is nothing ordinary about the #commonsunflower (Helianthus annuus)… imo they’re one of the most breathtaking flowers on earth.

These ones certainly are! I’ve seen these for the last fortnight growing in the garden fronting a busy road in #Huntingdale #Australia. Took a special trip out to photograph.

I spent a whole 10 minutes in awe. Even the #bee’s couldn’t resist them.

#Sunflowers are commonly grown as a crop for its edible oily seeds. Apart from cooking oil, it is also used as livestock feed (meal), as bird food and of course as an ornamental in gardens like this one.

🌻

This front facing garden bed in a well kept property contains around eight varying heights of brilliant coloured, single stemmed sunflowers. I’m over six foot and many I had to reach over another foot or two, to photograph their large yellow heads, which spanned 20 centimetres in diameter (8 inches)! Altext Continues next image.
Their heads contained a network of hundreds of singular petals, and they burst with a deep yellow (a touch of rich orange too) hue that, collectively, rounded the edges of the entire head around the diameter. The head was easily 8 centimetres thick (3 inches). As I said, huge! The centre of the flower head (pistil) was mainly covered in petals so there was little in the way of a visual there but it did not take away from their splendour. If anything the centre petals were light yellow to like green. With a slight indent the size of a five cent coin (aussie) resembling a small belly button! Altext Continues next image.
To the touch, the sunflower heads were so soft, well hydrated I suggest. These were most definitely in their prime. No burnt or dry edges, these contained a consistent quality coverage. A handful of petals naturally fell vertically (characteristic of sunflowers) under the head piece. Under the canopy of petals sat four to five small green leaves, followed by a sturdy mid-green erect stem around 3.5 centimetres (an inch) in diameter, straight down to the soil. The stem had a network of leaves, many of the larger ones were near the top of the plant and they ranged from 15 centimetres (6 inches) to double that size. The leaves had a visually lighter green network of veins and they were spotless. No burns or brown bits. Altext Continues next image.
These plants were superb! Bees were in abundance and they flew in, sometimes two at a time and sat pollinating. And resting, from memory. I observed their behaviour for ten minutes. These flowers and their deep green stems were super healthy. As in, in their prime. And the bees were in heaven too!

These beautiful #roses from #caulfield #australia were pictured a couple of evenings ago, pre sunset.

Their petals and general structure are well formed and in tact despite coming to the end of their flowering period.

I think the abundance of rain and cooler weather heading into #summer has contributed well to the longevity of roses in Melbs this year.

#Altext

These pictures show mature, full sized rose heads that are pale pink with a hint of yellow near the stamen (filaments, the hair-like structures in the middle).

They’re elegegant.
