One of my problems with overtourism in Japan is that I don't think there is a good solution. I think everyone should see Nara / Kyoto / Agra / the Acroplis of Athens / Michaelangelo's David / The Old Guitarist / ... but how do you make it possible for everyone to see a thing without financial barriers, and without the experience being miserable?

One of the things I love about physical ads is that people who do art got paid to make it. You can argue a giant vegetable juice box robot next to #Shinjuku station is an eye sore, but people who got paid to make it were able to spend that money on making other art that made the world better. Also, just imagine the pitch meeting where the guy is like, "hear me out..."

I did some battery-related DIY to revive my old analog Praktica SLR and documented the process: https://www.selfawaresoup.com/notes/2023/05/30/a-weird-battery/
Back home, unpacked. So, here's the thing that might get me back to analog photography: A Rolleiflex S66 medium format SLR released in 1966 that @jillpls had sitting in a closet since forever. This one was probably manufactured in the 70s, judging by the serial number.
It has some technical issues though: the mechanism seems stuck in the "released" position with the mirror flipped up and the film transport crank locked. I'll try to get it fixed and hopefully this beauty can have a second chance.
If anyone knows an address in Berlin where I can get it looked at by someone who knows this camera's mechanism well, that'd be much appreciated. I'd rather not try to fix this myself. Would be a shame to ruin this device by accident.

I once attended two masterclasses simultaniously. One was #ElliotErwitt giving a master class on street photography. The second was Mr. Erwitt also teaching a completely different master class at the same time on diplomacy, redirection and conflict resolution. I was surprised to find a handful of double exposures when I took my first look at the pictures from this roll of film! The roll was one previously used in another camera for a few shots before that camera was declared to be letting in not a sliver of light ... (Retrieving a film leader out of a canister is quite a challenge.)
When the conbini next to Shinjuku nichome renovated and opened a dining area, I knew this was going to end... well, spectacularly, for those of us spectating and not dealing with the problem. They pretty quickly started roping off the area and prohibiting people from using it from a certain hour at night until the morning rush. I grew up with the story this #gif tells, of how the #computer cleared our desk. The agenda, the reminders, and so on. This absorption is practically complete, the pc ate the #analog world that surrounded it and was here long before it. Today I miss every one of those things. Not out of nostalgia, but for the focus and experience of each task being its own device. So I bought a calculator again and I'm even thinking about buying an old #ibook just for creative writing.
