I've got working firmware! I've turned a Teensy and about $40 in other parts into... a light switch!
I haven't hooked up the magnets yet. For now, I turn the light on by touching two wires together. So it'd be a light switch, if only it had a switch.
Yeah, it ramps the illumination, and the magnet thing will be kind of cool, and it uses a power MOSFET to switch high current. But still, it feels kind of over engineered.
I just spent $50 on cables. Micro-B, Mini-B, and female A. Next time, I'll have the cable, I just won't be able to find it.
In tonight's episode of Bob Hates USB-C, our protagonist finds out he can't program a Teensy from his MacBook because he doesn't have a USB-C to USB Micro-B cable.

Развалился самодельный датчик уровня воды в колодце. Поплавковый. Лет 7 стоял. Посмотрел: человечество так и не придумало что-то простое и удобное для измерения уровня воды. Придется восстанавливать.

Okay, I’m … confused.
I’m using an #Arduino MKR 485 shield¹ and an #ESP32 to talk to what I assume is a half-duplex #RS485 bus. I’ve connected the Y, Z, and IsoGnd terminals to the bus.
I can receive data when pulling the RE pin low (it’s active low), no problem. But sending didn’t quite work. I thought I should only pull DE high while I’m sending, else I disturb the bus, but I found that I can keep it high all the time and communication still works. Why is that?
Decided to build that automatic cable pinout finder. The software will be easy, it's making all the little connector adapters that is tedious. First is Mini-DIN8. I think it took me an hour to make these two. And yes I even bothered to make the rainbow colors match the pin numbers.
Need to make a DE9 connector pigtail next.
Regarding #libsibo, I'm trying to decide on the way forward for the project.
Currently it's in #Arduino C, so there's the odd class, but it's mostly regular C. It'll run on an Uno, ESP32, or a Pico/RP2040.
I've wanted to drop the ESP32 support for ages. But I'm wondering about dropping Arduino support and switching fully to the #RP2040 SDK. For the Uno, I can just maintain the old .INO file for basic functions.
If I go C, I'll have to refactor the classes. But is going full C++ a good idea?

Fun(ish) facts about the Intel Galileo:
* The Arduino IDE downloads binary sketches to the board using *zmodem*, a semi-ancient protocol better known to BBS types 30+ years ago;
* The Galileo runs a small Linux on its Pentium-class CPU, and the current sketch is an executable called "/sketch/sketch.elf"
All manner of hobby electronic / maker parts going on here. I’m finally going to organise and store them after bringing them back with me to Portugal. 🗃️
This was all packed into one suitcase, so yep, it made me rather nervous when we went through airport security and the x-ray machine started beeping 😅 thankfully it was all smooth travels and I didn’t even have to open the case.

@hywan A few years ago my girlfriend and I got an #arduino-based lizard #robot from https://eu.robotshop.com/. May be worth looking there; I remember they offered quite the selection of different kits.
I don't remember what part (if any) of the SDK was open source, but I guess the products they sell come from different vendors anyway, so you need to check that yourself.
A #HomeAssistant update from me. Since setting it up and configuring the RPi + SSD and a couple of existing Reolink cams I'm on to integrating some of my custom hardware. Mostly #MQTT and #Arduino based.
I also found a Sony centre-channel bar speaker for $5 at a thrift shop and hacked it to add a power jack, amplifier board, and hardwired cable (plus a salvaged laptop speaker for 2nd channel) and mounted it unobtrusively in a stairwell.

Finished this one today! Most of this #guitar is #upcycled. The red oak neck is dovetailed to the body, which used to be a chair in my parents' house. The head came from the foot of their table. Ironic!
Walnut and sycamore inlay, wenge fretboard and knobs. I designed and 3d printed the pickups. Magnets are from an old toy, wound by an #Arduino winder I designed. The steel "wings"/pickup mounts were cut from an old PC case. The steel on the head was a spare IKEA part.

Introducing the #SerialStinger, a project that exemplifies "I could make an adapter for that, if only I had a breakout board for its socket" (#SimpleBreakouts).
My goal is for this to become a general purpose serial-device-to-USB-adapter - ambitiously, I want it to support PS/2 KBs and mice, some RS-232 gear (eg. Gravis Stinger), Apple ADB, and bus mice. Most of this stuff is already well-supported in #Arduino or other libraries - it's the hardware implementation that's tough. #retrocomputing
Oh will it #clock? My first try to build a rotary glow in the dark display. 5 #UV #LED wit a mcp23008 on an #arduino nano with a step stick to control a 1.8 degree nema 17 stepper. Used #glowinthedark filament to #3dprint a 1.2mm disk with 105mm diameter... Next step will be to use a ntp client on a esp8266 #reaktorraum

Interesting! I wrote my first program on a #TI82 graphing calculator sometime in the 1990s, so I've never gotten anywhere near "the bare metal" like some of y'all were doing in the 1980s, but I've still ended up with three #RaspberryPi boards, one #Arduino, and two #Luxonis #OpenCV kits, so I must have caught the hardware bug somewhere along the line.

The daisywheel of the typewriter is controlled by a [no-name] stepper. The stepper has 6 wires; the wires are very clearly paired [A A# FB1] and [B B# FB2], and [A A# B B#] are connected to a Darlington array which I can control.
After numerous tinkering I've established that I can rotate the spokes of the daisywheel by pulling down A->A#->B->B# sequence and pulling up everything else. I've tried other patterns I've found online and they didn't seem to work properly, jerking the stepper back and forth. And of course I've tried the Stepper library, and it didn't work at all.
The problem: doing a full A-A#-B-B# sequence rotates the wheel by more than one character (and the wheel tends to stop between characters, too). How the heck do I do half-steps there? I've been tinkering with this for two evenings now, and this is the point where I'm out of good ideas.

Zum Beispiel eine Heizungssteuerung mit dem #Arduino so programmiert, wo die Heizung ausgeschaltet wird wenn die gewünschte Temperatur erreicht wurde.
Wenn dann die Steuerung aus irgendeinem Grund ausfällt, heizt die Heizung unkontrolliert weiter.
Ok, I need a couple of 170 tie-point bread boards for an #Arduino project (basically to build 5-10 clones of the same circuitry). So before I order parts: what are the opinions on:

The thing I'm most concerned with is the quality of the holes and springs, since the boards will probably be mounted upside down later and assembled by beginners in a "build-along". So the springs should catch and hold easily.

@hotkey Retro projects can be challenging when you consider the hassle of getting some of the parts and then the construction complexity due to the usually high chip count. I find it a barrier for a lot of my casual tinkering.
Using #microcontrollers like the #RasPi #Pico and the #Arduino converts these hardware problems to software ones.
I think the whilst it might not tick all the "purist" boxes, it does make things more accessible and keeps the retro stuff alive 🙂
