If you follow me for a while, you already saw that study of a ghibli background.
It was a really great exercise. Lately, I’m doing my background for my upcoming webtoon, and I try to have a render closer to the one in Arcanes. I’m learning a lot of things in the process. That’s really great :)
Anyway, do studies from real life or the great masters to learn and understand key elements and subtilities.

Even though I use a grid for the initial sketch there was a bit of trial and error in this one. I ended up having to move her eye and adjust the shape of the face.
(The colour balance is a bit off in some of the WIP photos but you get the gist!)

I did this as a tutorial from a Renderwave Colorpedia book I purchased a few years ago.
The idea was to make backgrounds really quickly with big shapes and clarify somewhat to give a good impression without all the details. This took maybe 45 minutes to do.
