The light was beautiful this morning. All hazy, gentle and soft. The path in the middle on the right is the entrance to the #stumpery. Lots of new planting this year, which will only reach full height next year.

A damaged wall cupboard serves as an #ornament on the #patio wall in our #garden. It houses plants, dig finds from the garden (glass bottles, a clay pipe, animal teeth, etc.) and a couple of framed, #vintage photographs, which I change frequently.

The photograph shows a broken wall cupboard mounted on the patio wall in our garden. It has two shelves. On the top shelf are two framed, vintage photographs (one showing a group of old men in Greece, the other a man holding onto a tree) and decorative stones. Displayed on the lower shelf are garden dig finds: old glass bottles, a clay pipe and animal teeth. Below are three small drawers, two of them with small plants in pots. On top of the cupboard stands a small, rustic urn. Next to the cupboard is a wall mounted pot with flowering geranium.

When we first moved to this property, this was a fussy rockery. I let it all get out of control. Now the #evergreens are huge and interlaced with self-seeded plants, #poppies #yarrow and St. John's wort. It’s all rather beautiful now.

After a sunny morning a grey afternoon. View across the width of the garden. Very satisfying to think that only a few years ago there was nothing except grass, the trees and the hedge in the distance.

The photograph shows a romantic garden densely planted with trees, shrubs, annuals and perennials. Layer upon layer, it is difficult to gauge the size of the garden. The scene is back-lit by the low evening sun. A curved, paved path is partially visible. To one side of the path is a small sculpture of a Venetian flying lion.

Yesterday was garlic harvest. I am growing a softneck variety from Southern France in a no-dig bed and follow the traditional pattern, planting around the shortest day of the year and harvesting around the longest.

I am trying out a (new to me) technique to convert grass to a border. Covered the grass with a layer of cardboard and garden earth. By the time the cardboard has broken down, the grass should no longer want to come up. This is only a small strip to try out. No idea if this will work.
