Within its limitations, the #DwarfII is really quite remarkable. Take this image of the Lagoon Nebula (M8), for example. Shot on a near-full moon, in the middle of suburbia. This is *only* 150x15s frames, gain 60. I have used a dual-band Ha/OIII filter. These were stacked in #siril with a little final tweaking in #Snapseed.
Is it a great shot? No. Is it a good shot? Yes. And with very little effort.

After previously photographing IC 63, the Ghost Nebula, with the 5 inch refractor at f/7.5 (952mm), and seeing how small it is I wondered how it would look using the C11 at f/10 (2800mm). Squeezing out nebulosity with such a slow setup is not easy.

#Mercury "librates", meaning that its #rotation rate is not constant. This unsteady rotation induces a flow at the top of its molten core. There's a chance the Bepi-Colombo mission can detect the magnetic signature of that flow, which will give us information about the core.

Astronomers have produced the best picture yet of the "cosmic web." This enormous network of matter feeds the growth of galaxies & defines the large-scale architecture of the universe.

This animation reveals a 3-D slice through a network of hydrogen gas filaments that crisscross the spaces between galaxies. The data were collected by the Keck Cosmic Web Imager, or KCWI, which was designed to reveal the structure of this previously hidden component of the universe. The region covered in this observation is about 10.5 billion light-years away. The volume depicted here spans an area of 2.3 by 3.2 million light-years and extends across a depth of 600 million light-years (50 million per segment). Image credit: Caltech/R. Hurt (IPAC)

15 hours per panel for a total 45 hours.

This was extremely difficult to process and I'm not particularly happy with the result, but I can revisit the data when I've learned some more tricks!

We already pointed to issues for #ESAEuclid requiring extra time for commissioning. 👩🏼‍🏭 The #Euclid #spacecraft saw unexpected straylight 💡 and X-ray photons 🩻 from a hyperactive sun, and the fine guiding sensor 🔬 software was not yet to specifications.

It's starting to look better: Avoiding some sun-angles gets rid of straylight, while industry, ESA, and @ec_euclid scientists 👩🏿‍💻 are working on software updates and diagnostics.

Description from JWST Flickr linked in toot: Here are three side-by-side images of Neptune. From left to right, the first is labeled as taken by Voyager 2 in 1989. It’s a dark blue sphere with some pale blue or white streaks against a black background. The second is labeled as taken by Hubble in 2021. It’s a fuzzier and paler blue sphere also set against a black background. The third is labeled as taken by Webb in 2022. As seen in infrared light, Neptune resembles a pearl with thin, concentric oval rings.

In visible light, Neptune appears blue due to small amounts of methane gas in its atmosphere. Webb’s NIRCam instrument instead observed Neptune at near-infrared wavelengths, so Neptune doesn’t look so blue!

A fox is curiously looking at the camera, its head slightly tilted. In the background we can see several white telescope domes on a rocky terrain, slightly blurred against a deep blue sky.

Really gutted! My old telescope mount is fried and my new one not set up yet ... because ...

THERE IS A FRESH CORE COLLAPSE SUPERNOVA IN NGC 1097

I've imaged this galaxy many times before so a fresh supernova would have been a good pre/post image to catch!

One thing I really love about this galaxy is the central star-forming ring, which measures about 5,000 light years in diameter. It's a beautiful feature and one that can be captured from backyard telescopes.

A couple of older images from me first. NGC 1097 and a close-up of it core, where I compared my very shabby 1-hour, no darks, flats, bias image to Hubble's of the star formation ring. Amazed I could even get any of these results from my light-polluted backyard.

Supernova 2023rve was discovered on 8 Sept 2023, and is a great target for southern observers right now (crying) ... the galaxy reaches almost the zenith (85-degrees elevation) around 2:30 am Sydney time ... the perfect imaging time!

Also sharing a capture from South Australia by Kym Thalassoudis.

Southern observers, turn your telescopes to NGC 1097! A pulsar was just born (well, 48 million years ago it was) ...

Large barred spiral galaxy, face on, with bright central core region and two large winding arms
Two tile image showing a central brigh spot and a ring of stars forming around it. The top image is blurry, orange-hued and more amateur, the bottom image is sharp with structure and detail very clearly made out.
A barred spiral galaxy, set amongst a field of stars. The two spiral arms are diffuse and wavey, but tightly wrapped. A bright star in the galaxy is annotated with two crosshairs.

The Starship Kickstarter is now live. This is the most ambitious galactic cartography project I've ever organized: maps for 40 Milky Way locations and a virtual starship to visit them all!

Please support it if you can.

A few people asked me how they can process their own JWST images. It's super easy, doesn't require deep technical knowledge and is available for everyone to do right now!

I wrote a step-by-step guide of what you'll need, what to expect and how to start developing your own JWST images!

https://www.spaceaustralia.com/news/process-your-own-jwst-images-home

All of the below images have been processed by me, at home - so anyone can do the same.

I think this is such a nice way to get public engagement - teachers could get students to do this! It puts the science back into the general public's hands to play with.

Two tile image, split horizontally. On the top image, the edge of a spiral galaxy is seen, with large filaments of gas forming the spiral arm. On the bottom is the same section of the galaxy, but showing the stellar component, which is less obvious in structure and more diffuse with single points of light. The spiral structure is very obvious in the top image, but slightly noticeable in the bottom image.

Five tile image showing the plane Jupiter, as photographed by JWST but in a range of colours, and brightness scales. The varying brightness shows more or less details within the planet’s atmosphere and surrounding ring regions.
Three tile image, each showing the same image of the Pillars of Creation. These are three, large, finger like structures in space, made of giant molecular clouds. The three images are in different colours, from top to bottom: purple haze, electric orange, burnt brown and gold. The pillars are surrounded by a dense star field.

Just a quick thought.

If JWST happens to find traces of possible life on other exoplanets, since the light Webb has captured is just reaching it, then possibly the planet’s possible lifeforms are extinct? I mean, it is 120 lightyears away.

Edited for clarity. I just noticed I said the planet AND life. I did not mean to say that. 😂

The level of amateur astrophotography is getting so incredible.

Amateurs(!) discovered an unknown oxygen gas cloud appearing next to Andromeda in the night sky.

And the photograph of sprite lightning over a Tibetan landscape! I don’t recall ever seeing a similar image before.

DYK that the general public, you and I, have access to JWST images (within days of their release)?!

And you can download and process them?

I just colour processed the Ring Nebula, and holy hell, how is this a real image?! 🤯🤯🤯

Will write a blog on #SpaceAustralia this weekend on how YOU can also do this - super easy and no tech skills required.

The problem with exoplanets

It turns out that it is not so easy to make a reasonably reliable list of exoplanets orbiting nearby stars. This thread looks at why and possible solutions.

Was able to shoot all night last night, and was even able to grab the Horsehead Nebula just before dawn this morning with the C11 at f/10 which gives a nice close up.
