@nasa Happy that the first exoplanet discovered accidentally by Dale Frail and Aleksander Wolszczan in 1992 is included. They were not even mentioned when other #astronomers were awarded the Nobel prize for the discovery of exoplanets. And yet the discovery ended up showing exoplanets can show up in strange places.

The final new Hubble Messier image is Messier 19 (M19). The Hubble proposal associated with this image sought to investigate M19’s formation and the ratios of different populations of stars within the cluster. The first results from ESO telescopes on the DART controlled impact on an asteroid are out! Two teams monitored the aftermath of the collision with two instruments at ESO's Very Large Telescope: MUSE, which breaks up light into its constituent colours, and FORS, which can study polarised light. Both observations provided clues about the composition of the material ejected after the impact.

Extraterrestrial #life has the potential to exist on distant #exoplanets inside the terminator zone, which is a ring on #planets that have one side that always faces its #star and one side that is always dark.

Such planets are common because they exist around stars that make up about 70 percent of the stars seen in the night sky—so-called M-dwarf stars, which are relatively dimmer than our sun.

Have been observing with Parkes on the graveyard shift most of this week, and to keep myself awake I spent a bit of time processing some data from #JWST target: Wolf-Rayet 124.

These stars are hot, massive stars with stellar winds that are literally shredding the star's outer layers, creating this massive, beautiful and bright nebula. They're also some of the hottest stars known and are precursors to violent supernova events This one is about 15,000 light-years away.

The two different instruments on the JWST sees different features, and so we see different structures of this ferocious star. To generate these, I used four base tones in each and stacked as best I could.

On the left is the NIRCAM instrument, with filter F444W. On the right is the MIRI instrument with filter F1800W.

Accurate #chatgpt AITA post about #astronomy (and no, this fictional person was not being the a**hole).

Prompt: Can you write an AITA Reddit post about astronomy?

ChatGPT answer: Sure, here's a sample AITA post about astronomy:

Title: AITA for correcting my friend's astronomy facts in front of everyone?

I (28F) have been interested in astronomy for as long as I can remember. Recently, a group of friends and I were hanging out and somehow the topic of space came up. My friend (27M) started talking about how the moon landing was fake and how the earth is actually flat.

I couldn't believe what I was hearing and immediately started to correct him with the facts. I explained how the moon landing was real and how we have evidence from NASA to support it. I also explained how we have pictures of the earth from space which show that it is round.

My friend got upset and accused me of embarrassing him in front of everyone. He said that I should have just let him have his beliefs and that I was being condescending.

I don't think I was being condescending, I was just trying to correct his misinformation. AITA for correcting my friend's astronomy facts in front of everyone?

The Sombrero Galaxy - New Image!

The Sombrero Galaxy, or Messier 104, is an odd galaxy, roughly 31 million light years from Earth.
This family of stars is noted for its massive brightly lit center, surrounded by dark, intricate lanes of dark dust.

Did you know that water on Earth could be older than the Sun? Using ALMA, astronomers have found a new piece in this puzzle.

We know how water goes from proto-stellar clouds to young stars, and then from comets to planets, but the link between them was missing.

ALMA spotted gaseous water in the disc around the star V883 Ori. Turns out that the composition of this water is very similar to that of comets in our Solar System!
