When the tech platforms promised a future of “connection,” they were lying. They said their “walled gardens” would keep us safe, but those were prison walls.

The platforms locked us into their systems and made us easy pickings, ripe for extraction. Twitter, Facebook and other Big Tech platforms hard to leave by design. They hold hostage the people we love, the communities that matter to us, the audiences and customers we rely on. The impossibility of staying connected to these people after you delete your account has nothing to do with technological limitations: it’s a business strategy in service to commodifying your personal life and relationships.

We can – we must – dismantle the tech platforms. In The Internet Con, Cory Doctorow explains how to seize the means of computation, by forcing Silicon Valley to do the thing it fears most: interoperate. Interoperability is the only route to the rapid and enduring annihilation of the platforms. The Internet Con is the disassembly manual we need to take back our internet.

Finished #audiobook Forever Peace by Joe Haldeman. I had expected a sequel to Forever War but this was a completely separate story. Brain jacked soldiers, an experiment that could destroy the galaxy, and a weird plan to prevent the end by brain jacking everyone in the world, while extremist religious cultists who've infiltrated the DOD try to bring on the apocalypse. It's a fantastic tale about the belief in Santa Claus and what would happen if chlidren didn't believe in Santa. Or Hogfather as he is in Discworld known. My first book of the year is the excellent #autobiography from Patrick Stewart, "Making It So". A funny and candid journey through his life. I listened to the #audiobook, and it's read by him. Perfect.

It's an interesting history that hits many major events and includes lots of simple explanations. Five stars: Killer Run by Lynn Cahoon and Susan Boyce (Narrator) (2015) is the fifth book in the Tourist Trap mystery series. Jill Gardener has been pressured into sponsoring a 5K race through her seaside town. When her aunt's boyfriend collapses from heat exhaustion, he stumbles over the body of the race's organizer.

Just finished Where Peace Is Lost by @valerievaldes in audiobook format

A most enjoyable story with a wonderful narration by Rebecca Mozo. Highly recommended!

The plot achieves a balance I find appealing, focused on local events as lived through specific characters yet situated in an enticing broader galactic context that sparks the imagination (and perhaps might be explored in future sequels?).

Bailey Briggs, author of murder mysteries has brought her teenaged daughter to Humble Hills after her grandmother suffered a bad fall. Shortly after arriving, the mayor is murdered and it looks like grandma's honey is the murder weapon.

I'm less thrilled by the fact that #Libro.fm doesn't seem to support the concept of a series in any way. An #audiobook's membership and position within a series aren't shown anywhere, nor can you browse the other titles in a series while looking at the details for a specific book. #audiobooks

On the more positive side: I know #Libro.fm aren't responsible for the silly restrictions placed on purchases by publishers. I like the #DRM-free downloads, which include a choice of #M4B as a format, and the iOS app also seems reasonably good and #VoiceOver-accessible from a first glance. It lacks the 0.05 playback rate adjustment of #Audible, but supports automatic rewind-on-pause which is one of my favourite features in an #audiobook player.

Decided to try #Libro.fm to buy an #audiobook:

I had to create two accounts, get "creative" about my address on one of them, use a US-based VPN, gift myself credits from Account A to Account B, and only then could I buy the book. At least I supported some #bookstore I've never heard of, because it was chosen by default and had its logo appearing on every page and email they send.

American Prometheus - The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer

This is the bio that the movie Oppenheimer was based on. Absolutely fascinating stuff. Going the audiobook route. Narrator Jeff Cummings does a really good job. The paper version runs to about 1100 pages, so the amount of detail is rather more than in the movie, but the story is amazing. And sad.

What's the most ethical way to grab an #audiobook these days?

Finding time for all the reading I want to do in grad school is a huge challenge. I figure audiobooks could help, but I'd really rather not support #Amazon, #Google, or #Apple as gatekeepers.

This morning I was surprised to see that 12 credits were added to my Audible account with no explanation. I contacted support and was told it was for being a loyal customer, weird but true.

Now I got an E-Mail with the real reason:

“Our hearts go out to all impacted by the tragic events in the Middle East. While only a small gesture, we want to do what we can to make things a bit easier for members impacted at this time and have paused your billing for the next six months”.

Cool, thanks Audible, the books are indeed helping me cope.

With the news that Amazon/Audible is now offering an ai narrator conversion beta for books in KDP Select...but that the resulting audiobooks will be offered in an all-you-can-eat Audible Plus subscription model, means that author royalties will likely take another dive (just like musicians have experienced with streaming on Spotify). Successfully replaced the battery and re-purposed this 2012 Nexus 4 Google LG phone as an #audiobook, music player and remote :vaultboy:

It's light (139g) and tiny compared to today's phones and it can run Android 5.1 - which is thankfully still supported by LibbyApp (Overdrive), MusicCast, Spotify, LibroFM, AntennaPod and Plex.

The Nexus 4 is a beautiful phone with a dotted "holographic" glass pattern on the back.

Hello to everyone who may be coming across this on WordPress, or reading it from the Fediverse! It’s been one week since my last post, and I’m still just as excited about the ActivityPub integration with WordPress.com blogs as I was seven days ago.

I think this is my new favorite account on the fediverse, but don’t tell anybody on Mastodon I said that. 👀 Just kidding, people on Mastodon can see this post. 🤣 But anyway…

Now on to what I’m reading. I’m reading a lot of different books right now (as usual), and that’s partly why I haven’t written anything. How do I decide which book to write about when I’m reading so many? But I’ve finally decided to stop procrastinating and have forced myself to write a little update.

For nonfiction books, two of the main books I’ve been working on reading are:

1. Superclass by David Rothkopf (in an audiobook format, which I’ve never done before with a nonfiction book. Unfortunately the library doesn’t have it as an ebook on Libby.)
2. Chokepoint Capitalism by Rebecca Giblin and Cory Doctorow

Chokepoint Capitalism: this book is really angering me so far, so I keep having to take breaks to cool down. Nothing gets me angrier than reading about how artists are getting ripped off by huge corporate tech companies. I’m on the second chapter right now which is about Amazon, their origins, and how they are essentially taking over the entire publishing industry by force. I already didn’t like Amazon and after reading this chapter I really don’t like them. I can only imagine what the next chapters will be like.

Superclass: As I wrote above this book is in an audiobook format, which is an interesting experience for me since I usually read nonfiction books in either print or an ebook format. I decided the narrator was talking too slow so I sped it up to 1.50x lol. 😂 The book is about the 6,000 people in the world that are in government, run corporations, are in finance and media, and how interconnected all these people are around the globe. It talks about how they all know each other and have formed their own class, which is how the name superclass came about. It’s an interesting book so far, and I’m 38% finished with it according to the Libby app which is pretty good considering it’s 17 hours long.

I’m trying to be mindful of the fact that this is going to be published on the fediverse as well as on WordPress, so I don’t want to go on too long or else it’ll be a huge wall of text people will have to scroll through in their feed. So this was my first reading update! Looking forward to writing more of these.
