@sik0fewl #Canada could at least regulate the interchange fees to something close to the actual cost to the institution - that would help a lot. Other countries eg. #Australia have done so and there's been no exodus of credit card vendors. No doubt we'd see a lot fewer perks on credit cards but no great loss there (the "tax on the poor" I spoke of - basically kick-backs to high rollers with the high margin cards that generally charge the highest merchant fees).

If you are into #retrogaming including #arcade and #pinball machines, I recommend to watch this recent #documentary called 'Still Standing'.

It is peculiar because it tells the story from the point of view of #Australia, at a time before Internet, where the country was somewhat isolated.

Very intriguing to learn about a complex called Downtown in #Adelaide, which had large areas dedicated to #arcade and #pinball machines. It was, arguably, the largest in the world at its time.

Does anyone know what bird this is? Maybe some kind of masked honey eater? (North eastern Victoria, Australia)

It's back is greenish near the head going to bright turquoise lower down.

It's the first time I've seen it in our back yard. I can't find it in any of my bird books.

A severe thunderstorm warning was issued for parts of the south coast & Snowy Mountains, with damaging wind gusts likely & large hail possible.

There were 85 grass & bushfires burning across the state, with total fire bans in place in many areas.

In South Australia, Adelaide was expecting close to 50mm of rain, with >100mm to parts of Eyre Peninsula.

The big storm yesterday luckily didn't do much damage at our place. However I did get a shock at 6am this morning at how bright it was in the kitchen. Both the exterior shadecloth blind and the awning must have come down in the wind last night. Shows what a difference they make. First job of the morning was to repair and reattatch them both before the heat hit. Now we're back to our shady, dimly lit kitchen again.

Here in the US, most folks have no idea about all the green energy stuff in Biden's Inflation Reduction Act. But they sure know in #Australia and they're worried...

A dramatic ramp up in investment in the energy transition is stimulating the US economy, said the leader of the Greens, Adam Bandt, and Senator Penny Allman-Payne, who highlighted that some 170,000 jobs have been created, $110bn in private investment attained, and over 140 new plants built to make solar and battery storage.

"Australia can become a renewable superpower, but if we don’t act soon to transition our industries away from dirty fossil fuels, we risk getting left behind as the rest of the world moves on."

“December cyclones on the Queensland east coast are very unusual – there have been only three since 1970.

#AgedCare in Australia in 2023

~2018 I had dealings with federal government bodies that were meant to be ensuring the quality and safety of the care being provided in #AgedCareBusinesses in #australia

I encountered nominal watchkeepers whose approach amounted, in my opinion, to re-arranging the deckchairs on the Titanic.

A website spoke of possible disciplinary action - the phone conversation was explicit that that was not a possibility.

And to make up for the last four years of contributing nothing (and even putting aside the many years of failure under the #Coalition between 2013–19 when finances ought to have been ramping up to meet the 2020 goal), #Australia has a backlog of about $AU20b to be seen as anything like a 'fair' contributor to the #GreenClimateFund, remembering that the US$100b/yr represents only a fraction of what the developing world needs to ensure a just and swift transition to a climate-stable future.

And that's before we consider the #LossAndDamage fund announced a few days ago (another long-term sticking point in #UNFCCC negotiations and a separate piece of international #ClimateFinance), to which Australia has not yet made any kind of pledge.

Until Australia takes credible steps towards those kinds of figures, Australian government promises ought to be treated by all our neighbours as so much smoke.

When the #GreenClimateFund was being established, Australia's Prime Minister was #TonyAbbott, a #ClimateDenier, who had won the 2013 federal election promising to dismantle the baby steps towards a #ClimatePolicy the previous #Labor government had made.

So there was little surprise when PM Abbott announced in Nov 2013 that #Australia would be contributing a massive sum of $0 to the Green Climate Fund.

At the time, he claimed Australia would chip in AU$200m (then =USD$187m) over four years, but since this was merely a rebranding of existing #ForeignAid, it clearly didn't count as "new and additional funding", a fact that most journalists blithely ignored, falling for the bait-and-switch. Or we might say instead that the Australian government was overstating its foreign aid commitments by $200m over those years.

Nonetheless, the four years were soon gone, as was Tony Abbott, as well as his successor #MalcolmTurnbull, who in turn had been replaced as PM by #ScottMorrison. When it came time to pledge again in 2018, Morrison announced Australia would be pulling out of the Green Climate Fund entirely, a path also taken by the #Trump administration at the time, whom Morrison was often cribbing notes from when it came to what kinds of #cruelty and #selfishness he could get away with.

Just one more lane bro!

TfNSW opened Rozelle Interchange just over a week ago - one of the most complex underground motorway junctions in the world.

You guessed it - it's created new traffic and been front page news since!

The City of Sydney estimated $45B has been spent on the entire (privatised) motorway project known as Westconnex.

Followed all CASA rules (<250gm, visual line of sight, not near people, above empty park).

The EU has a fairly good position in the CO2 emissions league. 7,6 ton CO2e per person. Australia is 20,2 t and USA 19 t.

Now we can relax in Europe and wait for the others to catch up. World leaders can do that. The UK is doing the same, they even have room to max out their fossil fuel fields. That's how far ahead they are.

Yesterday I checked out the latest mpavilion opposite the NGV. It's way better than the images I'd seen, the inner pool is a wonderful thing and there are great framed views to trees and the city. It is fairly obvious the architect is Japanese (fantastic aesthetic) and has obviously been made aware of Melbourne weather - there is a substantial canopy and interesting walls to shelter from wind.
There's a coffee cart nearby so a nice meeting place

Did you know that in 1965, a #dress caused an uproar in #Australia?

#British #model Jean Shrimpton had been invited to the 1965 #Melbourne Spring #Racing event.

When she showed up 2 hours late, the crowd was silent.

She was wearing a simple white shift dress that ended 10cm above the knee. She wore neither hat or gloves nor stockings.

The then ultra conservative, outraged Aussies were mocked by the British press, who aptly called Shrimpton “a petunia in an onion patch”.

This is a photo of Jean Shrimpton at the Melbourne Spring Racing Event in 1965.

It shows Jean in a white shift dress with a centered applique, showing her bare arms. Her hair is loose and falls to her shoulders.
Her makeup is strong, with a lot of eyeliner.

She wears no tights, but only kitten-heeled white and black along back sandals.

There are many people in the background, all older on longer skirts and suit jackets, big tulle hats and gloves.

Jean is the only one looking directly into the camera.

Uh... #Australia! How would you spell this one of our colloquialisms? I've only ever said it.

Australia: the NSW parliament has voted unanimously to enshrine a 70% emissions cut by 2035 in law. It's so good to see cross-party support for #climateaction
Victoria has a bill enshrining 75-80% emissions reduction by 2035, bring forward net zero to 2045, 95% renewables by 2035.
