Another way that #automation manages to make my online life more complicated is #translation: When I have to find the original in order to understand the translation. At Limesurvey, "Collapse all" (of a list) translates to German Zusammenbruch (=mental breakdown). On the Spond website, sporting contests are referred to as Streichhölzer (=matches for lighting).

Problem with #automation (Home or otherwise) is that it works 90 % of the time. None of it is 100% dependable and due to the ever changing nature of everything, it can't ever be. So you just double check everything all the time, creating extra cognitive burden. And I say that as someone who uses a lot of it and really like most of it.

Generative AI seems to be the latest one. Still, there is more substance to generative AI than to cryptocurrency or the metaverse, which were the most recent candidates for the next new thing. Crypto never managed to become anything more than a casino, and the metaverse barely exists. By contrast, generative AI has all sorts of obvious use cases. It also has a “wow factor” that helps get the blood and capital flowing. ChatGPT, Midjourney, and the like may not signal the imminent arrival of an artificial superintelligence—I have my doubts—but they do demonstrate real technical sophistication of the kind that we didn’t see in, say, NFT apes.
As for what this shift means for worker struggles, it is important to note that generative AI is a labor-intensive technology. The data on which AI systems are trained needs to be sorted and labeled by humans. The outputs also need to be evaluated, especially to prevent AI interfaces from engaging in racist outbursts or other undesirable behavior. Most of the people who do this work are poorly paid; some are starting to organize. In May, a group of more than 150 Nairobi-based workers who helped to create ChatGPT and who maintain Facebook and TikTok voted to form a union. This is the sort of struggle that deserves the close and careful attention of journalists and organizers. AI tends to be presented in popular discourse as quite abstract, but at root it’s profoundly industrial, and the working conditions of the people turning its cranks can be downright Dickensian."

I love that I can set up custom firmware loaders on my website. I just made a page for custom ESPHome and WLED builds. Still have some work to do, but I’m glad I was able to do this before launch.
I am concerned that automation + capitalism = a perfect storm. This was the case with the augmented work enabled by the personal computer. Knowledge work improved significantly but wages did not.

After discussing it with the development leads my testing infrastructure team activated code coverage metrics in one of our code bases. There's also an automated check that fails if the coverage drops below the current state.
It's two weeks later and all of a sudden developers are discussing with me how to make our code more testable.
Years of convincing them didn't work out, now that it's automated it does. Sigh.

In my experience, I couldn't replace TextExpander with Keyboard Maestro. For some reason, the text expansion wasn't robust enough in KM--there were apps and situations where it didn't work.
So I'm using both, along with Raycast and Spacelauncher.
I wish I had an all-in-one, but this combo does what I need.
Trying to migrate away from IFTTT. I was looking at Zapier at first, but they want ~$20 per month. That's not worth it for me.
While looking for alternatives, I stumbled upon https://n8n.io. It had a self-hosting option, so I put it in a Docker container and started testing.
It has been great so far and I just migrated my few automation workflows from IFTTT to my new n8n instance.

I wrote to IFTTT asking when they would support Mastodon. I expected the standard, canned, “We’ll consider it.” Instead:
“We are actually planning to release a Mastodon service on IFTTT very soon, within a week or two!”
