Fish Crow

I should state that I am not 100% certain about this one. Fish Crows (Corvus ossifragus) and American Crows (Corvus brachyrhynchos) are notoriously hard to distinguish. The most reliable ways are either by their calls (American Crows give a full-throated "Caw!" while Fish Crows give a more nasal call) or when they stand side-by-side (Fish Crows are noticeably smaller than American Crows). Or through DNA sequencing. Coloration or feather distribution is unreliable as there is overlap and regional variation. In this case, although I didn't hear a call from this bird, Fish Crows are usual dwellers in this saltmarsh. Unfortunately, Fish Crows are becoming more prominent even in mixed flocks as the avian flu seems to be more virulent for American than Fish Crows.

A Greater Racket-tailed Drongo (Dicrurus paradiseus) spotted at Rifle Range Nature Park, Singapore, on 20 Feb 2023. Its dark feathers and long tail extensions usually make it a challenge to get nice shots of it in shaded forest areas.

This Drongo is a common forest resident. It is known to follow macaques (monkeys) to pick off insects disturbed by the macaques foraging.

Two winters ago (2021-2) into the spring there were a good number of juvies and a few adults overwintering at this site. I went to Jones Beach (NY) following a tip that a good number of Red Knots -- a red shorebird that specializes in eating horseshoe crab eggs -- were present. No Knots were seen.

I guess they were all tied up for the day...

*Ahem*

Anyway, I still had a great time with the fauna, including these tiny Piping Plovers that came remarkably close.

As for these Plovers, according to eBird they are considered endangered, "with a global breeding population of just 8,400 individuals [...] Population declines are due to direct and unintentional harassment by people, dogs, and vehicles; destruction of beach habitat for development; predation; and changes in water levels that affect availability of nesting habitat."

Not a great shot, I had to denoise and crop the hell out of it, but at least you can kind of make out the tell-tale hot orange-pink feet on this Blackpoll Warbler, a first for me. But, these warblers' legs aren't the only cool thing about them. For one thing, its call is so high-pitched as to be barely audible to the human ear. For another, as tiny as it is, it migrates over 1,800 miles from northern Canada to its winter digs in South America. Not so cool is the fact that its population has declined by about 80% during the past 40 years, largely due to the fossil fuel and other extractive industries devastating its nesting habitat in the boreal north.

"Breeding male Blackpoll Warblers [like this one] are black-and-white with a distinctive black cap and white cheeks bordered by a black mustache stripe. Breeding females are streaky black, white, and gray, without the male’s black cap or white cheek. Both sexes have two white wingbars and orange-yellow legs. In late summer they molt into a very different plumage: greenish-yellow above with dark streaking down the back and faint streaking on white underparts. The face is pale yellow with a dark eyeline" (All About Birds). AND, they have day-glo orange-pink legs!

I guess this has been my week for flycatchers. Another of the Tyrannidae, this one is a Great Crested Flycatcher, one of the more colorful members of the group. They inhabit open woods and edge habitats around woodlands. These flycatchers are not partial in terms of where they catch their insect prey, and they will also eat berries.

"Great Crested Flycatchers are reddish-brown above, with a brownish-gray head, gray throat and breast, and bright lemon-yellow belly. The brown upperparts are highlighted by rufous-orange flashes in the primaries and in the tail feathers. The black bill sometimes shows a bit of pale color at the base" (All About Birds).

And this afternoon, I had an even more uncommon visitor to my backyard: a female magnolia warbler.

I've only seen one in my garden twice before, five years ago, and ten years ago! So I guess I was due for a quinquennial visit.

A widespread North American member of the "Tyrant Flycatcher" family (Tyrannidae -- so-called because of their aggressive response to larger birds), the Eastern Kingbird is a fairly large songbird (if you want to pick nits, actually, it's a Passerine, but not quite a songbird) that favors tree-lined grassy fields, where it feeds on insects (it actually appeared to be foraging in the grass for insects in this field). It over-winters in South America, where its behavior shifts from solitary hunter to flocking fructivore.

Willow Flycatcher

These small birds prefer brushy, wetland areas, such as this Phragmites stand near an inlet, from which they sally forth to catch flying insects. They may be distinguished from other members of the Empidonax flycatcher genus by their distinct call, which sounds to me like "wheeeat-dewww." I had encountered these birds in this area last summer. When I got there, the the hordes of gnats reminded me, and I decided to stick around. Sure enough, not one, but two Willows showed up.

Saltmarsh Sparrow is considered endangered due to the double whammy of anthropogenic habitat destruction and climate change. It nests in reeds just above the high tide zone in saltmarshes, where even without sea-level increase, it is sometimes forced to relocate due to exceptionally high tides. Nevertheless, the resident population at my favorite spot, the Marine Nature Study Area, seems to be stable, if not abundant, and the birds are fairly prominent if you know what to look for (usually a little head sticking up above the Spartina grass).

A brightly colored Yellow-throated Vireo stopped briefly on a small limb bare of any leaves. In addition to its bright yellow chest its eye rings and lores are the same making it appear like spectacles. It head is olive-green and back is more gray with a whitish underbelly. This young one was quite the entertainer as it preened and continually ruffled its feathers. Captured along the 4800 ft boardwalk at South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center the last day of February.

American White Pelican Drifting Around by Debra Martz
I must admit it was such a beautiful, peaceful day that I would have enjoyed a float in which I could drift around myself! The water might have been too cool for me though, as I captured this beauty on a sunny, February day in a bay off of the Gulf of Mexico.

One of the largest North American birds is the American White Pelican whose large heads and huge, heavy bills give them a prehistoric look. This large white bird with a bright yellow bill is drifting peacefully on the bay water.

I had just been admiring another Tri-colored Heron from the boardwalk over the marsh area, then I turned to walk to the bay when I spotted this one in the Mangroves. I thought this was a beautiful, dream-like pose by this Heron as it gently preened its gorgeous plumage. Captured along the 4800 ft boardwalk at South Padre Island, Texas last day of February.

For a great hike to see #birds, make a visit to South Llano River State Park near Junction, TX. There are miles of trails. Some start from the campground such as Buck Lake Trail. Go past the Acorn blind, stop at Buck Lake for water fowl, then go left to the Riparian area & make a loop along the river & back through the tall, old growth oaks where I saw this #Phoebe

I love bird watching in south Texas where colorful, tropical birds can be found. I captured this Great Kiskadee in the butterfly garden of the South Padre Island Nature and Birding Center.

One of the first birds I saw upon arriving at the South Padre Island Nature and Birding center on Tuesday this week in the butterfly garden. Then it was off to explore along the 4800 ft boardwalk over marshes and to the bay.

Green heron perched on a branch with a few tiny leaves. From this front view it’s green is not very apparent as it’s throat and chest are a beautiful rufous color.
